Ariana could not see.

The silver light swallowed everything around her, leaving only an endless void where neither sound nor shadow existed. For one terrifying moment, she wondered if she had died.

Then she felt solid ground beneath her feet.

The light faded.

She found herself standing in the middle of an ancient stone chamber lit by flickering blue flames. The air smelled of dust and damp earth, as though no one had entered the place for centuries.

The first thing she noticed was the silence.

The second was that her grandmother was gone.

"Grandmother?" she called.

Her voice echoed through the chamber and vanished into the darkness.

No answer came.

Panic gripped her chest.

She spun around, searching for another exit, but the room was completely enclosed by towering walls covered in strange carvings. Wolves, dragons, and crowned warriors were etched into the stone, all surrounding the same symbol that decorated the pendant now resting against her neck.

The flaming wolf.

A faint scraping sound echoed behind her.

Ariana turned.

A hidden doorway at the far end of the chamber was slowly opening.

From the darkness stepped a tall man dressed in black armor trimmed with silver. A long sword hung at his side, and a dark cloak flowed behind him.

His face was sharp and striking, though exhaustion lingered in his gray eyes.

For several moments, neither of them spoke.

Then the stranger dropped to one knee.

"My queen."

Ariana stared in disbelief.

"I am not a queen."

"No."

He slowly raised his head.

"But you are the last heir to the Bloodbound throne."

Her heart skipped a beat.

"I do not know what you are talking about."

"I expected as much."

He rose to his feet.

"My name is Kael."

"You know who I am?"

"I have spent twenty years searching for you."

The chamber suddenly trembled.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Kael's expression changed instantly.

"They are close."

"Who?"

"The ones who destroyed your family."

Ariana stepped backward.

"I have no family."

Kael looked at her with quiet sadness.

"You have more family than you realize."

Before she could ask another question, the blue flames along the walls extinguished one after another.

Darkness spread across the chamber.

Only the silver pendant around Ariana's neck continued to glow.

From somewhere beyond the hidden doorway came the sound of slow footsteps.

Not one pair.

Many.

Measured.

Patient.

A deep voice echoed through the corridor.

"The Blood Heir has awakened."

Another voice answered.

"Take her alive."

Kael unsheathed his sword.

The blade shimmered with pale silver light.

He moved to stand between Ariana and the approaching danger.

"You must trust me."

"I do not even know you."

"You will."

The footsteps grew louder.

Shapes emerged from the darkness.

Six figures cloaked entirely in black entered the chamber. Their faces were concealed behind polished masks carved to resemble expressionless wolves.

Each carried a curved blade stained with crimson markings.

The tallest among them stepped forward.

He inclined his head respectfully toward Ariana.

"Your Highness."

She frowned.

"Why does everyone keep calling me that?"

"Because your blood belongs to the throne."

"And yours belongs to us."

Kael answered before the stranger could continue.

The masked warrior laughed quietly.

"It has been a long time, Guardian."

"Not long enough."

The six intruders spread out, surrounding the chamber.

There was nowhere to run.

Kael leaned closer to Ariana without taking his eyes off the enemy.

"When I give the signal, head for the eastern passage."

"I do not know where that is."

"You will."

"How?"

"The pendant remembers."

Ariana almost asked what that meant, but the floor suddenly shook again.

The pendant against her chest became warm.

Ancient symbols carved into the walls burst into silver light.

The eastern wall cracked.

Stone crumbled away to reveal a narrow tunnel hidden behind it.

Kael smiled faintly.

"I told you."

The masked leader raised his sword.

"Seize the heir."

The remaining warriors rushed forward.

Kael met them without hesitation.

His silver blade flashed through the darkness, colliding with the first attacker and sending sparks across the chamber.

The clash echoed like thunder.

Ariana stood frozen.

Fear urged her to stay.

Instinct told her to run.

Then she remembered her grandmother's final words.

There is a passage beneath the old chapel.

This had to be it.

With one last glance at Kael, she turned and sprinted into the hidden tunnel.

Behind her, the sounds of battle grew louder.

Then she heard Kael shout a single command.

"Do not look back."

But before she could obey, a deafening roar shook the earth itself.

The tunnel collapsed behind her.

And in the darkness ahead, two glowing crimson eyes slowly opened.
