Ella’s POV

“You’re my monster.”

The words still hang between us, heavy and stupid and true . Adrian’s face is buried in my neck, breath cold against my skin, whole body shaking like he’s coming apart at the seams .

I stroke his hair, careful, so careful . “Hey.... Talk to me.”

He pulls back just enough to look at me . The crimson has faded to thin rings around blown-wide pupils, silver fighting its way back. “I don’t deserve you saying that .”

“Too bad,” I whisper. “I say what I mean.”

He laughs, this tiny cracked sound. “You’re impossible.”

“Learned from the best .” I nudge his shoulder with mine. Golden sparks flicker, softer this time . “Tell me something real, Adrian. Something nobody else knows .”

He stares at the floor for a long time . “I used to think I was human .”
