Chapter 4

Author: Snowy Roll
Now, Fabian could ignore me being hurt and even warn me not to make things difficult for the woman he loved.

How could someone change so completely? How could I trust my whole life to someone like that?

If I were to marry him, I would only repeat the same tragedy.

I wiped my tears and went to the clinic to have a doctor treat the cut on my leg.

The moment I stepped inside, I saw Viola and Fabian on the other side of the hall, standing close together and acting all affectionate.

I heard her syrupy voice.

"If Sonia finds out you faked memory loss just so you could be with me openly, do you think she'll lose her mind?"

Fabian ruffled her hair fondly.

"Even if she does, it won't matter. Everyone knows she loves me to the core. Even if I forget her, she'll still run right to me, begging me to marry her."

My grandmother scoffed. "Keep bragging, punk. Just wait until the engagement banquet in two days. You'll cry so hard that you suffocate!"

I forced a stiff smile and sat down to get bandaged.

Suddenly, someone shouted in panic, "Run! Someone's attacking people with a knife!"

The whole place erupted in chaos.

I tried to run with the crowd, but because of my injury, I fell behind, and the crazed patient grabbed me. His knife swung upward, ready to strike.

I was just a woman, and I was nowhere near strong enough to fight him off.

In the chaos, I saw Fabian look over, startled by the commotion. I didn't care about anything else and shouted for help.

"Fabian, save me!"

Fabian instinctively started running toward me, but Viola clung desperately to his sleeve.

"Fabian, I'm scared. Please don't leave me."

His steps slowed.

In that brief hesitation, the knife slashed across my arm, opening a bleeding wound. The pain made me gasp.

My grandmother's voice buzzed in my head like a panicked hornet.

"Oh, no! In Sonia's last life, someone also broke into the clinic to rob people. How did she get caught up in this again?

"That useless Fabian. Sonia risked her life for him so many times, and he's just standing there, watching her get hurt!"

The pain was so sharp that I nearly blacked out. I bit hard on my lip to stay conscious and screamed again toward Fabian.

"Fabian, please save me! I'm going to die!"

But before I even finished, Viola let out a piercing scream.

One of the attackers noticed their fancy clothes and charged at them with a knife. Fabian instantly held Viola's hand and ran out of the clinic.

I watched with my own eyes as he protected the woman he loved and fled, leaving me behind. A crushing wave of despair slammed into me.

After everything I had done for him and after all our years together, I thought that he would at least feel enough pity to save me when my life was on the line, even if he didn't love me.

Just as the knife swung toward me again, the attacker suddenly stumbled and fell to the side.

Chandler had punched the crazed patient and grabbed my shoulder, pulling me away.

"Let's go!"

People were screaming, and the whole place was chaos. Thankfully, the patrol guards arrived quickly and brought the attackers under control.

I still hadn't recovered from the shock and crouched by the wall, shaking uncontrollably.

Chandler draped his coat over me and gave me a long, complicated look.

I forced myself to thank him, but I didn't ask him anything.

News of me getting injured spread quickly, and my grandfather found out. Furious, he demanded that Fabian and the Parhams come explain themselves.

When the assassin's first hit missed, he tossed a cloud of white powder straight at my face. I breathed it in before I could react, and my head started spinning. The tip of his sword shot toward me. I tried to move out of the way, but I wasn't fast enough, and the blade cut across my arm. Warm blood ran down, and everything went dark as I collapsed. When I opened my eyes again, Chandler grabbed my hand right away, his voice shaking."Sonia, you're up! Thank God I made it in time, and your arm only got a small cut. I'm really sorry I let you get hurt. From now on, I'll keep you safe no matter what."He pulled me close, and I could feel his whole body trembling. As I patted his back to calm him, my mind felt strangely blank, as if something important had slipped away. Then it hit me. My grandmother was gone.If she were still here, she would've cried out in worry the moment I got hurt and fussed over me. But even when I pressed down hard on the fresh cut and gasped from the pain,

Fabian refused to move and insisted on standing right beside me.Just then, Chandler returned."Well, what a coincidence, Fabian. Fancy meeting you again. Viola was just at the gate, grilling me with questions. Not letting her follow you around isn't exactly gentlemanly behavior."The two of them locked eyes, sparks practically flying between them.Fabian's expression darkened. "Don't celebrate too early. You two aren't married yet. Sonia used to be in love with me."Chandler let out a cold laugh. "Exactly. She used to. Past tense. You do understand grammar, right? Now, the person she loves most is me."Fabian snapped back, refusing to back down, "You sure talk big. Everyone knows I'm the one she really—"Before he could finish, Viola rushed forward and threw herself into his arms.Chandler gave Fabian a taunting look. "Oh, right. I forgot to mention that I brought Viola in under your name. You two are supposed to be so deeply in love. How could I separate such a passionate cou

My grandmother finished watching the whole scene and clicked her tongue. "Look at him. Scared of his own shadow but full of nonsense in his head. What a spineless fool."I nodded in agreement, then didn't spare Fabian another glance as I held Chandler's hand and walked into the cathedral.Chandler picked up one of the prayer ribbons the clergy was handing out and wrote down his name and birth date. When I took it, ready to add mine, I realized he had already filled in my information, too.I looked up at him in surprise. His ears were turning red again. "You brought it up once during my birthday party, and I remembered."Warmth spread through my chest, and for a moment, I didn't even know what to say. Then Fabian popped into my mind. He had never remembered my birthday. Every year, he gave me my gift two days early.I told him the correct date so many times. I even reminded him again a few days beforehand. But he always forgot, and the gift always came two days early. He said he

I left the hall and wandered into the garden to look at the flowers."Why did you come out here? Didn't I tell you to wait for me?"That cool, steady voice came from beside me. It was Chandler.I turned my head and happened to meet his deep, steady gaze. "Look at these blooms. Back when we studied at the academy, the flowers looked just like this."Since my grandfather was the royal advisor, I naturally had the right to study alongside the princes at the academy. There wasn't much to do there, so during breaks, my favorite place was always the garden.Usually, Fabian would accompany me. When he didn't want to come and I went alone, I always ended up running into Chandler.Back then, I didn't like Chandler. Not only did he speak bluntly, but he always seemed hostile toward Fabian. And since I took Fabian's side, Chandler and I were constantly at odds. The only time we ever got along peacefully was when we admired flowers together, quietly sharing the same patch of sunlight.Cha

"Of course, I'm happy. But we're not married yet, so we should still keep a little distance."Chandler spoke stiffly, but the tiny mole beside his nose glistened with a thin sheen of sweat, and even his face was red.I couldn't help reaching out to touch his warm cheek. Chandler froze instantly, then quickly grabbed my hand and turned away. "Uh… I left something in the carriage. I'll go get it. Wait here."He practically ran off.My grandmother chuckled in my mind. "This kid. He's quite adorable when he isn't saying mean stuff."I had to agree. Chandler had been ridiculously cute just now.Right then, I felt a stare burning into me. When I turned, I met Fabian's eyes. His face was full of shock and disbelief. Viola tugged lightly at his sleeve, but he didn't even seem to notice. He must have seen the way Chandler and I interacted. My grandmother scoffed, "Some people really don't know what they've got. When Sonia chose him, he treated her like nothing. Now that she picked some

"My fiancé is Prince Chandler."The moment the words left my mouth, the noisy crowd fell completely silent.Drake was so shocked that the fan he always carried slipped right out of his hand. "Sonia, did you say the wrong name? Weren't you supposed to be engaged to Fabian? How could it be Chandler?"Voices rose all around as people expressed their disbelief that I hadn't chosen Fabian."I didn't say the wrong name. The man I choose to marry is Chandler."I walked toward Chandler and held out a charm I had prepared as an engagement gift.Chandler didn't reach for them. He simply looked at me quietly.I bit my lip. "Do you not want to marry me?"His expression shifted, complicated and unreadable. After a long moment, he smiled, his eyes looking like crescents."Of course, I do."He took the charm, ran his thumb over it slowly, then hung it at his waist and bowed deeply to my grandfather.Only then did the tightness in my chest ease. The guests were quick to adjust.
