Chapter 16: The Heat Between Blades (Extended Edition)

The training hall was too quiet.

Aelric noticed it the moment he stepped through the heavy wooden doors. The usual chaos—the clash of steel, the barked commands, the echo of boots across stone—was gone.

Replaced by silence.

And her.

Kael stood at the center of the hall, unmoving, like she had been carved from the shadows themselves. Two blades rested loosely in her hands, their polished edges catching the dim torchlight.

Waiting.

For him.

Aelric closed the door behind him, the soft thud echoing louder than it should have. His boots carried him forward at an unhurried pace, though something in his chest had already begun to tighten.

“You’re late,” Kael said without turning.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Aelric smirked faintly. “Or maybe you’re early.”

That earned him a reaction.

Not much—but enough.

She turned slowly to face him, golden eyes locking onto his with sharp precision. There was no smile, no visible emotion… yet something flickered beneath the surface.

Something warmer than usual.

Something dangerous.

“Draw your blade,” she said.

But she didn’t move.

Aelric stopped a few paces away, studying her instead of reaching for his weapon.

“You’re not attacking?” he asked.

A pause.

Then, quietly—

“Maybe I want you to make the first move.”

The words hung in the air between them, heavier than they should have been.

Aelric’s grip tightened slightly at his side, but instead of drawing his blade, he stepped closer.

One step.

Then another.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Testing.

“That’s new,” he murmured.

Kael didn’t step back.

That, more than anything, made something shift inside him.

Usually, she would have struck by now. Forced distance. Reasserted control.

But tonight…

She held her ground.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

The space between them shrank until it was barely there at all. Aelric could hear her breathing now—steady, but deeper than usual. He wondered if she could hear his too.

“Are you afraid?” she asked softly.

The question wasn’t mocking.

It wasn’t even challenging.

It was quieter than that.

Almost curious.

Aelric let out a low chuckle. “Of you?”

He leaned in slightly—not enough to touch, but enough to feel the shift in the air.

Kael’s fingers tightened around her blade.

But she didn’t strike.

Instead—

She stepped closer.

Now there was no space left.

Her presence filled everything—the air, his senses, his focus. He could see every detail: the faint rise and fall of her chest, the intensity in her gaze, the way her lips parted just slightly as she breathed.

“Maybe you should be,” she murmured.

Her voice had dropped.

Lower.

Softer.

Not a threat.

An invitation.

Aelric’s gaze flickered—just for a second—to her lips.

A mistake.

Or maybe…

A risk he didn’t mind taking.

“Then prove it,” he said.

That was all it took.

Kael moved.

Fast.

Her hand shot out, grabbing his wrist with precise force. She twisted, using his balance against him, her movements fluid and controlled. Before he could counter, she drove him backward—

Until his shoulders hit the cold stone wall.

The impact knocked a breath from his lungs.

But he didn’t resist.

Didn’t fight it.

Her blade came up instantly, pressing flat against his chest.

Not cutting.

Not even close.

Just there.

A warning.

Or something else entirely.

Aelric exhaled slowly, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “You hesitated.”

Kael stepped closer.

Too close.

Her face was inches from his now, her eyes locked onto his with an intensity that burned.

“I didn’t,” she said.

But she hadn’t pushed the blade any further.

Hadn’t ended it.

Hadn’t even tried.

Her gaze searched his, like she was looking for something—something deeper than skill, deeper than rivalry.

Something neither of them had named.

Aelric felt it too.

That pull.

That dangerous, invisible thread tightening between them.

He lifted his free hand slowly.

Carefully.

Giving her time to stop him.

She didn’t.

His fingers brushed against her wrist—the one holding the blade.

Light.

Barely there.

But it sent a spark through both of them.

Kael’s breath caught.

Just slightly.

“You’re distracted,” he said quietly.

Her eyes narrowed faintly, but there was no real heat behind it.

“I could say the same about you.”

Aelric leaned forward a fraction, testing again.

Pushing.

Always pushing.

Kael didn’t retreat.

Didn’t stop him.

But her grip on the blade weakened.

Just enough.

The metal shifted against his chest.

Then slipped.

Falling from her hand.

Clattering against the stone floor with a sharp, echoing sound.

Neither of them looked at it.

Neither of them moved.

The silence returned—but this time it wasn’t empty.

It was full.

Heavy.

Electric.

Aelric’s hand was still around her wrist.

Her other hand had come to rest lightly against his chest—whether to steady herself or stop him, even she didn’t seem to know.

Their breaths mingled.

Close.

Too close.

“You should pick that up,” he said softly.

Kael didn’t move.

“Or what?” she asked.

Aelric’s lips curved slightly. “Or I might start thinking you’re not here to fight.”

That did something.

He saw it in her eyes.

That flicker again.

Warmer now.

More dangerous.

“And what if I’m not?” she said.

The question wasn’t planned.

It slipped out.

And the moment it did, something shifted.

Aelric stilled.

For once—

Completely still.

His gaze searched hers, trying to understand what she meant… or what she wasn’t saying.

“Then why are you here?” he asked quietly.

Kael didn’t answer immediately.

Her fingers pressed slightly against his chest, feeling the steady rhythm beneath.

Too steady.

Too controlled.

She exhaled slowly.

“I don’t know.”

It was the first honest thing she had said.

And it hit harder than any blade.

Aelric’s grip on her wrist loosened—not letting go, but softening.

His other hand shifted, brushing lightly against her side as he adjusted his balance.

The contact was brief.

Accidental.

But neither of them ignored it.

Kael’s breath hitched again.

This time, more noticeable.

“Aelric…” she started.

But the words didn’t come.

Didn’t need to.

He understood.

Or at least—

He thought he did.

Slowly, deliberately, he leaned closer.

Not rushing.

Not forcing.

Giving her every chance to stop him.

She didn’t.

Her eyes flickered shut for just a second.

Then opened again.

And stayed on his.

The distance between them disappeared—

Almost.

A sound broke through the moment.

Distant.

Faint.

Footsteps.

Voices.

Coming closer.

Kael pulled back instantly, like she had been burned.

The shift was immediate.

Sharp.

Controlled.

She stepped away, turning her back to him, her posture rigid.

“Again,” she said, her voice colder now.

Like nothing had happened.

Like the air between them hadn’t just changed.

Aelric stood there for a moment, watching her.

Then slowly bent down, picking up her fallen blade.

He turned it in his hand once before tossing it lightly back to her.

She caught it without looking.

Effortless.

Familiar.

Safe.

Back to what they knew.

But not quite.

Because something had shifted.

Something neither of them could ignore now.

Aelric raised his own blade, stepping back into position.

“Try not to hesitate this time,” he said.

Kael’s grip tightened.

Her stance lowered.

Her voice sharpened.

“Try not to get distracted.”

They moved at the same time.

Steel clashed.

Faster than before.

Harder.

But beneath every strike…

That tension remained.

Unspoken.

Unfinished.

And far from over.

They left before dawn.No announcements. No witnesses.Just quiet movement through the outer gates while the stronghold still slept under the illusion of safety. The sky was a deep, endless blue-black, untouched by morning. A few faint stars lingered, stubborn against the coming light.Arin walked beside Kael in silence. Not tense. Not distant. But… different.Something between them had shifted after the ridge. Not broken. Not fully mended.Just… changed.More honest.More dangerous. She could still feel it.The weight of his words. Then I will. The promise he had made.Or the threat. She wasn’t sure which one it was anymore.“You’re thinking too loudly.”His voice cut gently through the quiet.Arin didn’t look at him. “You’re listening too closely.”“I always

  • Bonds By Blades    Chapter 29: What Remains of You

Arin didn’t remember how long she stayed there.Time blurred into something meaningless. The ridge was quiet again.Too quiet.Like the land itself had exhaled after nearly tearing itself apart. The cracks in the ground still glowed faintly, thin lines of something unnatural running beneath the stone like veins of dying light. The air carried a metallic taste now, sharp and lingering, clinging to the back of her throat. She sat where she had collapsed.Or rather… where she had been caught. Her body felt distant.Heavy.Not entirely her own.Every breath was slow and uneven, like her lungs were relearning how to work after being forced into something they were never meant to handle. The power had receded. But not completely. It never did.Now it lingered.Quiet.Patient.Watching.Arin pressed her hand against the ground, fingers brushing over the fractured stone. It was warm.Still.That shouldn’t have been possible.Nothing about this should have been possible.“You’re going to hurt

  • Bonds By Blades    Chapter 28: The Price of Going Alone

The moment Arin crossed beyond the outer watch line, the world changed. Not visibly. Not immediately. But she felt it.Like stepping through an unseen boundary where something ancient had been waiting. The wind was colder out here.Sharper.It cut through the fabric of her clothes and settled into her bones, but that wasn’t what made her uneasy. It was the silence. No distant clashing of steel. No low hum of voices. No sense of protection behind stone walls.Just open land stretching endlessly ahead. And the feeling…That she was no longer just walking through it.She was being watched by it.Arin tightened her grip on the blade at her side but didn’t slow her pace.Turning back wasn’t an option. Not anymore. Not after what she said. Not after the look in Kael’s eyes when she walked away. Her chest tightened at the memory. She pushed it aside.Focus.This was her choice. Her responsibility. If she was the reason the enemy kept coming…Then she needed to understand why.And the only wa

  • Bonds By Blades    Chapter 27: The Breaking Distance

The stronghold had never felt this suffocating before. Not even during war.Not even during the worst nights when the air carried the scent of blood and smoke and loss. This was different. This silence wasn’t born from battle. It was born from something far more dangerous.Tension.Arin stood at the far edge of the courtyard, arms folded tightly across her chest, her gaze fixed on the fractured stone beneath her feet. The marks were still there.Deep cracks running through the ground like veins of something broken open. Her doing. Her power. Her mistake.Voices moved around her, soldiers passing, medics tending to the injured, captains giving orders, but it all felt distant. Muted. Like she was standing outside of it all, watching a world she no longer fully belonged to.She flexed her fingers slowly. They still trembled. Not from exhaustion. From memory. From the feeling of that power surging through her again and again in her mind.Uncontrolled.Unforgiving.Alive.“You keep staring

The first clash hit like thunder.Steel collided. Shields splintered. The ground trembled under the force of impact as Kael’s forces met the advancing enemy head-on.Arin barely had time to think before instinct took over.Move.Fight.Survive.She surged forward with the front line, blade already in motion. The first attacker came at her fast, wild, untrained in appearance but deadly in intent. She sidestepped, pivoted, and drove her blade across his side.He fell.Another replaced him instantly.Too fast.Too many.Something was wrong.“These aren’t soldiers!” someone shouted nearby.Arin realized it too late. They didn’t move like trained warriors. They didn’t hesitate. They didn’t fear.Even as they fell, more pressed forward without pause.Relentless.Like they didn’t care if they lived or died.Or worse…Like they already knew they wouldn’t.Arin blocked a strike, twisting her wrist to disarm her opponent before kicking him back. He hit the ground hard. And then got back up.Her

She tried. She really did.But every time she closed her eyes, she saw him.The messenger. That empty gaze. That knowing look. And worse… the question he had asked.Do you even know what you are?It echoed in her mind like something alive.Something waiting. The room felt too small.Too quiet.Too suffocating.By the time the first hint of dawn crept through the narrow window, she was already on her feet.Restless.Uneasy.And done pretending everything was fine. She stepped into the corridor, the cold stone grounding her just enough to breathe.Guards were posted at every turn now.More than usual.Kael hadn’t wasted time.Their eyes followed her as she passed. Not suspicious.Protective.That should have comforted her.It didn’t.It made her feel like a target.Like something valuable that needed guarding.Something that could be taken. She clenched her fists slightly.No.She wasn’t going to sit still. Not today. Not anymore. The training grounds were nearly empty at this hour.Jus
