Chapter 7: The Test Beyond Control

last update publish date: 2026-03-25 18:35:11

By the next day, the academy stopped pretending.

They weren’t just watching anymore.

They were testing.

Kael felt it the moment he stepped into the courtyard. The air was different—thicker, heavier, like a storm waiting to break. Students stood in tighter groups, their voices low, cautious. No one stood near him.

Or near Lucien.

Good.

Kael preferred it that way.

But the bond—

It didn’t.

A low, constant pull settled in his chest, drawing his awareness toward Lucien like a compass that refused to misalign. He didn’t need to look to know exactly where he was.

Left. Ten steps behind.

Calm.

Focused.

Watching.

Kael exhaled slowly.

This is getting worse.

“First-years.”

Master Harken’s voice cut through the courtyard.

Instant silence.

“Today’s training will take place outside the academy walls.”

That got a reaction.

Subtle.

But real.

Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Outside?

That wasn’t normal.

Not this early.

Harken continued, his gaze sweeping over them like a blade. “You’ve been tested in controlled environments. Today, that control is removed.”

A pause.

“Out there, no one will protect you.”

Good.

Kael didn’t want protection.

He wanted truth.

They were divided into groups.

Small.

Uneven.

Deliberate.

Kael already knew what was coming before Harken spoke his name.

“Kael Vance.”

A beat.

“Lucien Draven.”

Of course.

“Group Three.”

Kael stepped forward without hesitation.

Lucien joined him seconds later.

The bond tightened instantly.

Not painful.

Not yet.

But heavier.

More present.

Like it was aware of what was coming.

The gates of Draven Academy opened slowly.

Not like before.

Not welcoming.

Not even threatening.

Just… final.

Beyond them stretched a dense forest, shadows clinging to every branch, every path twisting into uncertainty.

Kael’s instincts sharpened immediately.

This wasn’t just a mission.

It was another kind of trial.

The kind you didn’t come back from if you failed.

“Your objective is simple,” Harken said.

That alone told Kael it wasn’t.

“Retrieve the marked relic hidden within the forest.”

A small, dark object was tossed toward each group—a compass-like device, faintly glowing.

“It will guide you.”

Kael caught it easily, turning it in his hand.

Warm.

Alive.

“Return before nightfall,” Harken added.

A pause.

Then—

“If you can.”

The groups moved out quickly.

No one wasted time.

No one trusted anyone.

Kael stepped into the forest first.

Lucien followed.

The bond reacted immediately.

Stronger.

Sharper.

Like the moment they crossed the boundary, something had shifted.

The forest was wrong.

Kael noticed it instantly.

Too quiet.

Too still.

Even the wind felt controlled, unnatural as it moved through the branches above.

He slowed slightly, scanning the surroundings.

“Stay alert,” he muttered.

Lucien’s voice came from just behind him. “Always.”

Kael almost smirked.

At least some things didn’t change.

They moved deeper.

The compass in Kael’s hand pulsed faintly, its glow shifting as they walked. But Kael didn’t rely on it.

He relied on instinct.

And now—

On the bond.

A faint flicker passed through him.

Lucien.

Alert.

Something’s off.

Kael stopped.

Immediately.

“So you feel it too,” he said quietly.

Lucien stepped beside him, eyes scanning the trees. “We’re not alone.”

The attack came without warning.

A blur of movement from the left.

Fast.

Silent.

Deadly.

Kael reacted instantly, ducking just as a blade sliced through the space where his head had been.

Not a student.

Not an instructor.

Something else.

A figure emerged from the shadows—masked, silent, moving with unnatural precision.

Kael’s eyes sharpened.

Not one.

Three.

Surrounding them.

“Stay close,” Lucien said.

Kael didn’t argue.

The bond surged.

The first strike came from behind.

Kael spun, blocking the attack just in time. The force sent a shock through his arm, but he held his ground, countering immediately.

Lucien moved at the same time.

Perfectly.

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Just—

Synchronization.

They fought like they had trained together for years.

Every movement aligned.

Every strike connected.

Every defense anticipated.

Kael didn’t think.

Didn’t hesitate.

He just—

Moved.

And Lucien moved with him.

One of the masked figures lunged forward.

Kael sidestepped

Lucien intercepted.

Another came from the right

Kael was already there.

It wasn’t coordination anymore.

It was instinct.

Shared instinct.

But then

Something changed.

The bond spiked.

Violently.

Kael froze for half a second

And that was enough.

A blade cut across his shoulder.

Sharp.

Clean.

Deep.

Kael gasped

And instantly

Felt it again.

The pain.

Shared.

Lucien staggered beside him, his breath catching.

Kael’s eyes widened.

No…

“It’s amplifying,” Lucien said through clenched teeth.

Kael gritted his own. “I noticed.”

The bond wasn’t just sharing anymore.

It was multiplying.

Every injury

Every sensation

Doubled.

“End this fast,” Kael said.

Lucien didn’t respond.

He didn’t need to.

They moved again.

Faster.

Harder.

No restraint.

Kael attacked head-on, drawing attention—

Lucien struck from the blind side.

A perfect combination.

One of the figures dropped instantly.

The others hesitated.

That was their mistake.

Kael felt it before it happened.

Lucien’s intent.

Sharp.

Focused.

Final.

Kael moved with him.

Together—

They finished it.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Breathing.

Uneven.

Alive.

The masked figures didn’t move again.

Kael straightened slowly, his shoulder burning.

Lucien stepped closer—

Too close.

The bond reacted immediately.

“You’re injured,” Lucien said.

Kael scoffed lightly. “So are you.”

Lucien didn’t argue.

Because it was true.

Kael looked down at his shoulder, then back at Lucien.

“This is a problem.”

Lucien nodded once. “Yes.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“If we take damage—”

“We both feel it,” Lucien finished.

“And worse,” Kael added.

Silence.

Understanding.

“This mission wasn’t random,” Kael said finally.

Lucien’s gaze darkened. “No.”

Kael clenched his fist slightly.

“They’re testing the bond.”

The realization settled heavily between them.

Everything made sense now.

The pairing.

The observation.

The timing.

“This isn’t training,” Kael said.

Lucien shook his head once.

“No.”

Kael exhaled slowly, his eyes scanning the forest ahead.

“Then we stop playing by their rules.”

Lucien looked at him.

Really looked this time.

And for the first time—

There was no distance in his gaze.

No cold control.

Just—

Understanding.

“Agreed,” he said.

The bond pulsed.

Stronger than ever.

As they moved deeper into the forest, one thing became clear to both of them.

This wasn’t just about survival anymore.

It wasn’t just about the academy.

It was about control.

Power.

And something far more dangerous

Something neither of them fully understood yet.

Because whatever this bond was

It was growing.

Adapting.

Becoming something new.

And if the academy thought they could control it

They were wrong.

Arin didn’t remember how long she stayed there.Time blurred into something meaningless. The ridge was quiet again.Too quiet.Like the land itself had exhaled after nearly tearing itself apart. The cracks in the ground still glowed faintly, thin lines of something unnatural running beneath the stone like veins of dying light. The air carried a metallic taste now, sharp and lingering, clinging to the back of her throat. She sat where she had collapsed.Or rather… where she had been caught. Her body felt distant.Heavy.Not entirely her own.Every breath was slow and uneven, like her lungs were relearning how to work after being forced into something they were never meant to handle. The power had receded. But not completely. It never did.Now it lingered.Quiet.Patient.Watching.Arin pressed her hand against the ground, fingers brushing over the fractured stone. It was warm.Still.That shouldn’t have been possible.Nothing about this should have been possible.“You’re going to hurt

  • Bonds By Blades    Chapter 28: The Price of Going Alone

The moment Arin crossed beyond the outer watch line, the world changed. Not visibly. Not immediately. But she felt it.Like stepping through an unseen boundary where something ancient had been waiting. The wind was colder out here.Sharper.It cut through the fabric of her clothes and settled into her bones, but that wasn’t what made her uneasy. It was the silence. No distant clashing of steel. No low hum of voices. No sense of protection behind stone walls.Just open land stretching endlessly ahead. And the feeling…That she was no longer just walking through it.She was being watched by it.Arin tightened her grip on the blade at her side but didn’t slow her pace.Turning back wasn’t an option. Not anymore. Not after what she said. Not after the look in Kael’s eyes when she walked away. Her chest tightened at the memory. She pushed it aside.Focus.This was her choice. Her responsibility. If she was the reason the enemy kept coming…Then she needed to understand why.And the only wa

  • Bonds By Blades    Chapter 27: The Breaking Distance

The stronghold had never felt this suffocating before. Not even during war.Not even during the worst nights when the air carried the scent of blood and smoke and loss. This was different. This silence wasn’t born from battle. It was born from something far more dangerous.Tension.Arin stood at the far edge of the courtyard, arms folded tightly across her chest, her gaze fixed on the fractured stone beneath her feet. The marks were still there.Deep cracks running through the ground like veins of something broken open. Her doing. Her power. Her mistake.Voices moved around her, soldiers passing, medics tending to the injured, captains giving orders, but it all felt distant. Muted. Like she was standing outside of it all, watching a world she no longer fully belonged to.She flexed her fingers slowly. They still trembled. Not from exhaustion. From memory. From the feeling of that power surging through her again and again in her mind.Uncontrolled.Unforgiving.Alive.“You keep staring

  • Bonds By Blades    Chapter 26: When Control Shatters

The first clash hit like thunder.Steel collided. Shields splintered. The ground trembled under the force of impact as Kael’s forces met the advancing enemy head-on.Arin barely had time to think before instinct took over.Move.Fight.Survive.She surged forward with the front line, blade already in motion. The first attacker came at her fast, wild, untrained in appearance but deadly in intent. She sidestepped, pivoted, and drove her blade across his side.He fell.Another replaced him instantly.Too fast.Too many.Something was wrong.“These aren’t soldiers!” someone shouted nearby.Arin realized it too late. They didn’t move like trained warriors. They didn’t hesitate. They didn’t fear.Even as they fell, more pressed forward without pause.Relentless.Like they didn’t care if they lived or died.Or worse…Like they already knew they wouldn’t.Arin blocked a strike, twisting her wrist to disarm her opponent before kicking him back. He hit the ground hard. And then got back up.Her

She tried. She really did.But every time she closed her eyes, she saw him.The messenger. That empty gaze. That knowing look. And worse… the question he had asked.Do you even know what you are?It echoed in her mind like something alive.Something waiting. The room felt too small.Too quiet.Too suffocating.By the time the first hint of dawn crept through the narrow window, she was already on her feet.Restless.Uneasy.And done pretending everything was fine. She stepped into the corridor, the cold stone grounding her just enough to breathe.Guards were posted at every turn now.More than usual.Kael hadn’t wasted time.Their eyes followed her as she passed. Not suspicious.Protective.That should have comforted her.It didn’t.It made her feel like a target.Like something valuable that needed guarding.Something that could be taken. She clenched her fists slightly.No.She wasn’t going to sit still. Not today. Not anymore. The training grounds were nearly empty at this hour.Jus

  • Bonds By Blades    Chapter 24: The Edge of Breaking

The silence in the war hall felt unnatural. Not peaceful. Not calm.Wrong.Like something had already gone terribly off course and no one had caught up to it yet.Kael stood at the center of the room, arms folded across his chest, eyes locked on the map spread before them. The flickering torchlight painted shadows across his face, sharpening the tension in his jaw.Lucien leaned against a pillar nearby, outwardly relaxed, but his fingers tapped rhythmically against his arm. A habit. One that only showed when he was thinking too hard.Across from them, the council members whispered among themselves, their unease thick in the air.And Arin stood at the edge of it all.Watching.Waiting.Trying to breathe.Something was coming. She could feel it in her bones.“This doesn’t make sense,” Kael said finally, his voice cutting through the murmurs.Every conversation stopped instantly. He pointed at the map. “The northern outposts went silent at the same time. Not attacked. Not burned. Just… g
