Chapter 32: The Breaking Point

last update publish date: 2026-03-31 21:37:21

The arena was too quiet.

Not the usual tense silence before a fight. No. This was something heavier—like the entire academy was holding its breath, waiting for something to shatter.

Kael stood at the center, blades resting loosely at his sides, but his body was anything but relaxed. Every muscle was coiled, ready. Waiting.

Across from him… stood Ren.

But not the Ren he knew.

There was something wrong.

Ren’s posture was stiff, unnatural, like a puppet held by invisible strings. His eyes—once sharp with wit and quiet defiance—were now hollow, glowing faintly with a cold, unfamiliar light.

Kael’s chest tightened.

“Ren,” he called, voice low.

No response.

The crowd murmured from the stands above, sensing it too. This wasn’t just another duel.

This was dangerous.

Professor Halvern stepped forward, his expression unreadable. “Begin.”

The word barely left his lips before Ren moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Kael barely raised his blade in time as Ren’s strike crashed into him with brutal force. The impact sent a shock through his arms, forcing him back several steps.

Steel rang against steel.

Kael steadied himself, eyes narrowing. Ren had always been quick—but this?

This was something else entirely.

“You’re holding back,” Ren said coldly.

The voice… it wasn’t his.

Kael’s grip tightened. “You’re not yourself.”

A faint smile curved Ren’s lips—but it was wrong. Twisted.

“Then make me remember.”

Ren lunged again.

This time, Kael met him head-on. Their blades clashed in a blur of motion—strike, block, counter, repeat. Sparks flew as steel screamed against steel.

Kael fought defensively at first, trying to read him, trying to find a way through whatever was controlling him.

But Ren didn’t fight like himself.

There was no hesitation. No strategy. Just relentless, overwhelming force.

It was like fighting a storm.

Kael staggered as Ren’s blade grazed his side, drawing blood.

The crowd gasped.

“Kael!” someone shouted.

He ignored it.

His focus was locked entirely on the boy in front of him.

“Snap out of it!” Kael growled, pushing forward, forcing Ren back with a flurry of strikes.

For a moment—just a moment—Ren’s eyes flickered.

There.

Kael saw it.

A crack.

“Ren, listen to me,” he said, voice urgent. “This isn’t you. You’re stronger than this.”

Ren froze.

The arena fell silent.

Hope surged in Kael’s chest.

But then—

Ren screamed.

It wasn’t a human sound.

Dark energy burst from him like a shockwave, sending Kael flying across the arena. He hit the ground hard, air knocked from his lungs.

Pain exploded through his body.

He barely managed to roll to the side as Ren’s blade slammed down where his head had been seconds before.

“You talk too much,” Ren snarled, his voice layered—like two voices speaking at once.

Kael pushed himself up, blood dripping from his lip.

“So it’s possession,” he muttered.

That explained everything.

But it didn’t make this any easier.

Because it meant…

Hurting Ren might be the only way to stop him.

Kael’s chest tightened.

No.

There had to be another way.

Ren attacked again, faster than before. Kael barely kept up, his blades moving on instinct as he deflected strike after strike.

His mind raced.

Think.

There had to be a weakness.

Something controlling him…

Something Kael could break without breaking him.

Another strike. Another block.

Kael’s arms burned.

He couldn’t keep this up much longer.

Then—

He noticed it.

A faint glow at Ren’s collarbone. Subtle. Pulsing with each movement.

Kael’s eyes sharpened.

There.

That was it.

Whatever was controlling him… it was anchored there.

Kael exhaled slowly.

This would be risky.

If he missed—

No.

He wouldn’t.

Ren charged again, blade aimed straight for Kael’s heart.

Kael didn’t move.

Gasps echoed through the arena.

At the last possible second—

Kael stepped in.

Not back.

Forward.

Ren’s eyes widened—just slightly—as Kael slipped past the blade, closing the distance between them.

Too close for swords.

Kael dropped one blade.

And drove his remaining dagger straight toward the glowing mark.

For a split second—

Everything stopped.

The blade struck.

Light exploded.

Ren screamed.

The sound tore through the arena, raw and broken.

The dark energy shattered like glass, fragments dissolving into the air.

Kael caught Ren as his body went limp, collapsing against him.

The arena fell into stunned silence.

For a moment, there was nothing.

No movement.

No sound.

Then—

Ren’s eyes fluttered open.

Clear.

Confused.

“…Kael?” he whispered.

Relief hit Kael so hard it almost brought him to his knees.

“Yeah,” he breathed. “I’ve got you.”

Ren blinked, his gaze slowly focusing. “Did I…?”

Kael shook his head quickly. “It wasn’t you.”

Ren’s expression tightened anyway, guilt flickering across his face.

Kael didn’t let him spiral.

“Hey,” he said firmly, gripping his shoulder. “You fought it. I saw it. That’s what matters.”

Ren stared at him for a long moment.

Then… he nodded.

Slowly.

Above them, the crowd erupted into noise—cheers, confusion, panic, all mixed together.

But Kael barely heard it.

His focus was entirely on the person in his arms.

Professor Halvern approached, his gaze sharp as he studied Ren.

“…Interesting,” he murmured.

Kael didn’t like that tone.

“What did you do to him?” he demanded.

Halvern’s lips curved faintly. “Nothing he wasn’t already susceptible to.”

Kael’s eyes darkened.

“That’s not an answer.”

But before Halvern could respond—

A voice cut through the arena.

Cold.

Authority dripping from every syllable.

“That’s because the answer isn’t his to give.”

Everyone turned.

A figure stood at the entrance of the arena, cloaked in shadows.

The air itself seemed to shift around them.

Kael felt it instantly.

Power.

Ancient. Heavy. Dangerous.

Ren stiffened beside him.

“…No,” he whispered.

Kael glanced at him. “You know them?”

Ren’s grip tightened weakly on Kael’s sleeve.

“…That’s the one,” he said, voice trembling. “The one who was inside my head.”

Kael’s blood ran cold.

The figure stepped forward slowly, their presence swallowing the light.

“Well done,” they said, voice smooth and unsettling. “You broke my hold.”

Their gaze settled on Kael.

“Impressive.”

Kael stood, positioning himself in front of Ren without thinking.

“Stay back,” he said.

The figure chuckled softly.

“I’m not here to fight,” they said. “Not yet.”

The words sent a chill down Kael’s spine.

“Then why are you here?”

A pause.

Then—

“To claim what’s mine.”

The air cracked.

Before Kael could react, shadows lashed out from the figure, racing across the arena floor like living things.

They wrapped around Ren.

Fast.

Too fast.

“Ren!” Kael shouted, grabbing him—but the shadows pulled harder, dragging Ren away.

“No—!” Ren reached for him, panic flooding his face.

Kael tightened his grip.

“I won’t let you take him!”

The shadows surged.

Stronger.

Kael’s feet slid across the ground as he fought to hold on.

The entire arena watched, frozen.

“Let go,” the figure said softly.

Kael bared his teeth.

“Make me.”

For a moment, the world seemed to hold still.

Then—

The shadows snapped.

Exploding with force.

Kael was thrown back, his grip torn away as Ren was ripped from his grasp.

“KAEL!” Ren screamed.

And then—

They were gone.

The shadows vanished.

The figure disappeared.

Silence crashed over the arena.

Kael hit the ground hard, pain screaming through his body—but he barely felt it.

Because Ren was gone.

Again.

Kael slowly pushed himself up, his hands shaking.

His chest felt like it was caving in.

No.

Not again.

Not this time.

His eyes hardened, something dark and unyielding settling in their depths.

“They want a war…” he muttered.

His grip tightened around his blade.

“Then I’ll give them one.”

The first clash shattered the silence. Kael moved like a storm breaking loose—fast, precise, relentless. His blade cut through the air with lethal intent, aimed straight for the figure standing between him and Ren. But it never landed. The moment steel should have met flesh— It met shadow. The figure dissolved, their body unraveling into a mass of dark tendrils that twisted away from Kael’s strike like smoke slipping through fingers. The blade passed harmlessly through, leaving nothing but rippling darkness in its wake. Kael didn’t stop. He pivoted instantly, dragging his blade back across the arc where the figure reformed. This time, he infused the strike with everything he had—speed, force, and a raw edge of fury that burned through his veins. The shadows recoiled. Not much. But enough. A faint ripple—like something real had been touched. “There you are,” Kael muttered. Behind him, Lira darted forward, her twin blades flashing as she slashed through the lingering tendr

The silence after battle was always worse than the fight itself.Kael stood in the courtyard, his chest rising and falling as the metallic scent of blood clung to the air.
