Chapter 53 – The Line We Crossed

The silence wasn’t peaceful.

It was suffocating.

Kael stood by the window, his back to Rowan, shoulders tense beneath the dim glow of moonlight. Outside, the night stretched endlessly, but inside, the room felt too small—too tight for everything they weren’t saying.

Rowan hadn’t moved.

Not since they got back.

Not since the blood. The fight. The way Kael almost didn’t make it out.

“You shouldn’t have followed me.”

Kael’s voice cut through the silence—quiet, controlled, but sharp enough to wound.

Rowan swallowed, his throat dry. “And let you die alone?”

Kael stiffened.

“That wasn’t your choice to make.”

Rowan’s hands curled into fists at his sides. “You don’t get to shut me out like that. Not anymore.”

A bitter laugh escaped Kael as he turned around. His eyes were dark, unreadable.

“Not anymore?” he repeated, stepping closer. “Since when did you decide you had a place in my life?”

That hurt.

But Rowan didn’t step back.

“Since you kept coming back for me,” he said, voice unsteady but firm. “Since you refused to let me go.”

For a moment, something flickered in Kael’s expression—something raw, something real.

Then it vanished.

“You’re a liability,” Kael said coldly. “That’s all.”

The words landed like a blow, but Rowan forced himself to hold his ground.

“Then why didn’t you leave me?” he shot back. “Why risk everything for someone who doesn’t matter?”

Kael stopped just inches away from him.

Too close.

Rowan could feel his breath, uneven and warm against his skin. Could see the faint scars on his face, the tension in his jaw, the storm raging behind his eyes.

“Because you don’t understand anything,” Kael muttered.

“Then make me understand.”

The challenge hung between them.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Kael’s gaze darkened. “You really want the truth?”

“Yes.”

The answer came without hesitation.

That was Rowan’s mistake.

Because in the next second, Kael grabbed him—fingers tight around his arm, pulling him forward until there was no space left between them.

Rowan’s breath caught.

“Don’t pretend you can handle it,” Kael said, his voice low, rough. “You don’t know what I’ve done. What I am.”

Rowan’s heart pounded, but he didn’t look away.

“I don’t care.”

That made Kael falter.

Just for a second.

“I should hate you,” Rowan added softly.

Kael’s grip tightened. “You should.”

“But I don’t.”

Silence crashed between them again—but this time, it was different.

It was louder.

More dangerous.

Kael searched his face like he was looking for a lie… or an escape.

He found neither.

“You will,” Kael said finally, though his voice had lost its certainty.

Rowan shook his head. “No.”

And that—more than anything—broke something.

Kael exhaled sharply, like he was losing control, like he was standing on the edge of something he couldn’t come back from.

Then he did the one thing he swore he wouldn’t.

He closed the distance.

The kiss wasn’t gentle.

It wasn’t soft or careful.

It was desperate. Angry. Burning with everything they had been holding back.

Rowan froze at first, shock ripping through him. But the heat of it—the intensity, the raw emotion—pulled him in before he could stop himself.

His hands gripped Kael’s shirt.

And for a moment, nothing else existed.

No past. No enemies. No lines.

Just this.

Just them.

Then Kael pulled away.

Abrupt.

Like he’d been burned.

“This is exactly why you need to stay away from me,” he said, breathing hard, his voice rough and uneven.

But it didn’t sound like a warning anymore.

It sounded like fear.

Rowan stared at him, heart still racing, chest rising and falling too fast.

“Too late,” he whispered.

Kael’s expression tightened.

Because they both knew it was true.

The line had been crossed.

And there was no going back.
