Chapter 3

Author: Echoes Everywhere
I suddenly felt a little empty inside, so I walked over to the wine cabinet, thinking I would grab a bottle.

The comments floated past.

[Seriously? If Lyra doesn't want Nolan's baby, she can just get an abortion. There's no need to drink on purpose! Damn, she's evil.]

[Right? She's pregnant, and Nolan doesn't even know yet. He doesn't have a kid later in the plot, so this one's definitely not gonna make it.]

My hand froze in mid-air. Silently, I put the bottle back and locked the cabinet. Then, I sat down on the couch and started wondering what I should do about the baby.

My phone suddenly buzzed. It was a message from Nolan.

"Remember to eat dinner. Don't drink on an empty stomach. Don't stare at your phone in the dark, and don't stay up all night."

I stared at the screen for a long time. All of a sudden, I couldn't bear the thought of getting rid of this baby anymore.

A week later, I got a text from the bank. Nolan had transferred some money to me and included a note with it. "Half a month's salary. Use it for now."

It wasn't a lot, and the amount was oddly specific. I stared at the message, zoning out for a while.

The comments exploded.

[So he literally only left himself enough for cheap meals every day!]

[His hands are covered in blisters, yet he's still thinking about his ex-wife.]

I dragged myself up from the couch. I touched my still-flat abdomen and said slowly, "Sweetheart, I think your dad is about to starve."

Then, I walked into the kitchen. I'd basically never set foot in here for the past three years.

Before, it had always been Nolan cooking all kinds of fancy dishes for me. I only knew how to make instant mac and cheese, and I still managed to burn it sometimes.

I looked up a recipe. While following it, I almost cut my hand. I also forgot to add salt. But after two full hours of chaos, I finally managed to make a pot of broth.

Then, I went to the pharmacy to buy iodine and band-aids. From the scattered hints in the comments about the "new development zone in the south of the city", I hailed a cab and headed over.

The construction site was full of dust. I stood at the entrance in my lounge dress and slippers while holding a thermal food carrier, standing out like a sore thumb.

The comments started teasing me.

[Why does she actually look kind of cute dressed like this?]

Just as I was craning my neck and looking around, a white sedan pulled up. Celia stepped out, carrying a delicate lunch box.

She saw me, too. Her smile faltered for a second, then smoothed back into elegance. She walked over to me. "Ms. West? What are you doing in a place like this?"

Her gaze dropped to my food carrier, and she chuckled lightly. "Have you brought lunch for Nolan? He has a sensitive stomach and can't handle anything too greasy."

I looked seriously at the broth I'd made. "It's chicken soup, and it isn't greasy. I skimmed the fat."

Celia took a step closer and lowered her voice. "Ms. West, I think there are a few things you're not getting here. Right now is the hardest time in Nolan's life. What he needs is someone who can help him get back on his feet, not some clingy little ornament who can only make broth."

I thought about what to say for three whole seconds. "But he's doing manual labor right now. That takes strength, not making a comeback."

I paused, then added, "And I'm not a clingy ornament. I can make my own money… I just haven't figured it out yet."

The comments were stunned.

[Celia just got roasted into speechlessness.]

[Lyra's logic is always this bizarre, yet it's also somehow impossible to argue with.]

Just as the atmosphere turned awkward and tense, Nolan walked out of the construction site. His work clothes were covered in dust, and there were band-aids all over his hands. He had sweat on his forehead.

When he saw us, he visibly froze.

Celia immediately went up to him. "Nolan, I brought you lunch…"

But Nolan walked straight toward me instead, his brows furrowing. "Why are you here? There's too much dust."

I held up the food carrier and the bag of medical supplies. "I brought you soup and medical supplies."

Something shifted in his eyes. His fingers trembled slightly as he took the things from me.

Celia's face went pale. "Nolan, I came here for you—"

He turned to her, his voice polite but distant as he said, "Ms. Sanders, thank you for your kindness, but I don't need it. Please don't come again."

Eight months later, I lay in the delivery room, in so much pain that I wanted to twist Nolan's head right off.He stayed with me the whole time. I squeezed his hand so hard that it was covered in bruises, but he didn't make a sound. He just looked at me with reddened eyes and kept saying, "Breathe. Take deep breaths with me."[Mr. Steele is seriously nailing this whole "birthing coach" thing.][You can tell he did his homework beforehand.][But his hand is about to get crushed. Haha!]"It's out, it's out!"A baby's first cry echoed through the delivery room."It's a boy!"Right after that, another sharp cry rang out."There's a girl, too! It's a pair of twins, one boy and one girl!"The comments exploded.[A pair of twins, a boy and a girl!][Lyra literally completed the family unit in one go!][Mr. Steele is a winner in life!]Nolan held both babies with shaking hands. He looked at the little boy in his left arm, then at the little girl in his right. Tears spilled down h

Celia walked up to me and looked down at me, her expression arrogant. "Feeling pretty pleased with yourself now, huh? You've moved into the Steele estate, you're pregnant, and you're Mrs. Steele again."I didn't answer. I just kept eating my strawberries.[Celia sounds so bitter.][She's totally jealous.]Celia took a deep breath, then suddenly smiled. "You know what? Back in high school, Nolan brought me breakfast every single day. We went to school together and came home together. He didn't talk much, but he was different with me than with everyone else. Before his mom passed away, she even said she wanted us to get engaged."[Here we go again!][Lyra, don't believe her lies!]I looked at her. "Oh."Her expression stiffened. "Is that all you've got to say?""What else is there to say?" I put down the strawberry. "Everything you just said is in the past.""Don't you feel grossed out by it? Your husband has a whole history with another woman."I thought about it. "He never t

Nolan stepped in front of me, shielding me. "Grandpa, I told you not to make things hard for her."Arthur snorted. "I haven't said anything yet."The rest of the Steeles stood off to the side, each with a different expression. Some were curious, some openly dismissive. A few younger women whispered to each other, their eyes full of judgment as they stared at me.[This family's vibe is so suffocating.][Is Lyra gonna be okay here?][Mr. Steele, protect your wife!]I wasn't too bothered, mainly because I was hungry. I tugged on Nolan's sleeve and whispered, "Is there anything to eat? I'm starving."I hadn't spoken loudly, but the hall was so quiet that everyone heard me. The atmosphere instantly turned awkward.[Hahaha! Lyra, are you serious right now?][Who says they're hungry at a rich-family reunion scene?][To be fair, pregnant women do get hungry all the time.]The corner of Nolan's mouth lifted."Of course." He turned to the butler. "Bring out the snacks that were prepa

Nolan continued explaining, "I only asked for a divorce because I was afraid the Steeles would try to hurt you."I blinked."I wanted to keep you somewhere safe, somewhere that looked like it had nothing to do with me. That way, the Steeles wouldn't have noticed you. Then, after dealing with everything, I would've brought you back."[So the divorce was to protect Lyra!][Hold up—he said he was worried the Steeles would go after Lyra. He didn't mention Celia at all.]I thought about it and asked, "What about Celia?"Nolan's gaze suddenly sharpened. "There's nothing between her and me.""But three years ago, didn't you get drunk at that bar—""That wasn't because of Celia." He cut me off, his voice suddenly dropping low. "It was because of you."I froze. He looked at me, his eyes slowly turning red around the rims. "Three years ago, when I got wasted at that bar, it wasn't because Celia left the country. It was because… I wanted to be sure that you would find me."[This is the

A nurse came in to change Nolan's dressing. She smiled when she saw us leaning against each other. She said, "Mr. Steele, you really scared Mrs. Steele this time. She was even paler than you were when you were brought in."Nolan turned to look at me.I said seriously, "It's because I'm anemic. It wasn't from being scared."The comments went wild.[Lyra, this isn't the time to correct her!][Mr. Steele: My wife's priorities are always so unique.][But why is this so cute?]Once the nurse finished changing his bandages, Nolan said he wanted to transfer to another hospital. "This place is pretty basic. I've already contacted a private hospital. I'll be transferred there tomorrow."I was puzzled. "Didn't you say you were bankrupt? Private hospitals are really expensive.""I have enough money," he hedged. The comments popped up.[Nolan is definitely hiding something.][No way he's just a bankrupt CEO—there's more to this.][I bet he's from the Jalton Steeles.][That family's o

The comments were equally stunned.[Mr. Steele is crying…][Man, he must really love Lyra.][He didn't cry when he thought the baby was gone, yet here he is, bawling now that he knows it's still around.][Because the fear only hit him afterward.]I dabbed at Nolan's tears with my sleeve. "Hey, don't cry."He opened his eyes and grabbed my hand. He held on tight, like he was afraid I would disappear."I'm sorry," he said hoarsely. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have just assumed without asking you properly…""Yeah, you didn't." I nodded. "You came up to me and immediately accused me of aborting the baby. Before I got the chance to say anything, you started coughing up blood."Nolan's face stiffened. "…I coughed up blood?""Yeah. A lot. You scared the hell out of me."The comments were amused.[Lyra sounds like she's just talking about the weather.][Her reaction time is longer than the equator.][But she did say he scared the hell out of her. That means she does care.]Nolan sta
