Chapter 3

Author: Fiona Fenwick
"If you ever need help, wear this cloak and come to Porter Manor to find me. I've already made arrangements for you."

With that, Tiffany turned and left.

I remained crouched where I was. I never once reached for the thick wool cloak she had left behind. I was cold. However, I wanted to go home even more. I could not accept her kindness. I did not want to owe anyone ever again.

After Tiffany left, I stayed outside Johnson Manor until night fell. One by one, the lights along the street went dark. However, Sheila never came back.

Not long afterward, one of the footmen who had left with her hurried back to the manor to retrieve a bank draft. As he passed me, he sneered.

"Some people really should know their place. Lady Sheila is spending the next few days with Prince Keith at the finest hotel in the royal capital. She's not coming back. Oh, and she sent me here to get money for His Highness's celebration tonight.

"The entire fireworks show, along with every glowing lantern, is her gift to Prince Keith. Surely, you know now who's most important to her."

With a smug smile, he walked away.

Slowly, I lifted my head. Brilliant fireworks burst across the night sky one after another. Countless glowing lights drifted upward, while hundreds of floating lanterns glided peacefully down the river, disappearing into the distance.

For a moment... I saw Sheila's radiant smile.

"Elliot, I bought every firework display in the royal capital just for you. Go take a look."

Without thinking, I started walking toward her. However, when my mind cleared... the people standing on the bridge were Sheila and Keith.

Keith leaned gently against her shoulder. Together, they set a lantern out onto the river. The way Sheila looked at him was filled with tenderness, as though no one else existed in the world.

Maybe I had stared for too long, but Sheila finally noticed me. When our eyes met, the warmth in her gaze vanished instantly. She whispered something to Keith before walking straight toward me.

The next second, her fingers clamped painfully around my wrist.

"Didn't I tell you to stay as far away from me as possible? Who permitted you to come here?"

Pain shot through my wrist.

Without the slightest mercy, she shoved me backward several steps. She was afraid Keith would see me. Just as she was about to warn me again, Keith gently slipped his arm around hers. His eyes had already begun to redden.

"Sheila, don't treat Elliot like this. Before I returned to the capital, I looked into everything. I know you've kept Elliot by your side these past three years because he looks a little like me.

"I also know that you've turned down every proposal because you've been waiting for me to come back. I don't blame you. However, Elliot is innocent."

Keith looked at me with sympathy. "Look at him. He's dressed so lightly and he looks freezing. I also heard that he hasn't spent a single coin of your money in the past three years. Earlier, when we released our lanterns, I forgot to write a wish on one of them.

"I heard you're an excellent swimmer, Elliot. Would you help me retrieve it? I'll pay you ten gold coins. That should be enough to buy yourself a new wool cloak."

He looked completely sincere as if he truly wanted to help me. He was asking the man who had unknowingly taken his place to dive into an icy river and fetch something for him, but somehow, he was the one with tears in his eyes.

Sheila immediately wiped the moisture from the corner of his eye. She let out a helpless sigh. "Keith, you're just too kind."

However, if he were truly kind... why would he ask me to jump into a freezing river when he could clearly see how pale I was and how badly I was trembling? It was the middle of winter. The river was bitterly cold. If I went in, I would definitely get sick.

I did not want to agree. However, just as I turned to leave, Sheila grabbed my hand again. Her voice was colder than the winter wind.

"Haven't you always said you wanted to repay my kindness? Then this is my 98th wish. I want you to do as Keith asks and bring back that lantern."

She leaned in slightly, her voice full of warning. "If you refuse... you can forget about ever completing the last two wishes."

She had always believed that my promise to repay her was nothing more than an excuse to cling to her, so she was certain she could control me forever.

What she did not know was that I still remembered what had happened a year ago.

It had been the height of summer. Just to make her smile, I jumped into a lake to pick a blooming white water lily for her. Instead of being happy, she scolded me, "I don't ever want you putting yourself in danger."

The moment Keith heard the word 'wish', he froze.

"So... Elliot is really only doing all this to repay your kindness?"

Sheila did not argue. She simply smiled."Marrying you… sounds good."At last, Keith completely let his guard down. Before I could say anything, the elder calmly interrupted Sheila."He did fulfill your wishes. However, once your wishes are spoken, they can never be changed. The two wishes directly contradict each other. The backlash from the contract of fate began the moment you made them."This child has already suffered more than enough. So, Lady Sheila, please honor your 97th wish. Let Elliot live."His voice remained calm. However, Sheila instantly understood what he meant. Once a wish had been made, it could never be taken back. If she continued to cling to Elliot, the only one who would continue to suffer was him.Overwhelmed by regret, Sheila clenched her fists so tightly that her knuckles turned white. Her lips trembled, but no words came.Seeing that she had finally fallen silent, the elder slowly stepped forward and lightly touched the center of his forehead."Thank you for coming to his aid. Elliot's POV:Before Sheila could run after me, the king's royal guards stepped in to block her path. The king slowly walked over with a calm expression."My child, everyone knows how deeply you've cared for Prince Keith all these years. You've done everything for him. You schemed, you sacrificed, and you were even willing to give up everything the Johnson family owns. I've seen it all."In that case... Today, I officially announce your engagement to Keith. I couldn't ask for anyone better to look after my son."The king's voice was full of approval. It was also clear that his decision was final. Not far away, the diplomatic delegation from the neighboring kingdom, who had not yet departed, let out an icy laugh."What a clever way to clean up a mess."By then, they had been deceived three separate times. They had already given up on taking Keith back. How could they not see that everything happening then was simply the king taking advantage of the situation? They had already r

The elder naturally knew that Sheila was only trying to buy time. Even so, he eventually agreed. After Sheila left, the elder lowered his gaze to me.I was already fast asleep, and his expression remained calm.Among the Ageless, no one truly understood love before reaching 100 years of age. He knew better than anyone what Sheila hoped to gain. However, without roots, no tree could ever grow, no matter how carefully it was tended.…Early the next morning, an official invitation arrived from the king. The moment we entered the royal palace, servants presented us with countless priceless jewels and lavish gifts.A royal attendant bowed respectfully. "His Majesty hopes these gifts will express his apology to your honored clan. As for Prince Keith, the royal family will give you a satisfactory explanation."The elder quietly explained, "This is the king's apology. The Ageless rarely enter the outside world, but every royal family fears our clan. He's trying to earn our goodwill."

In the end, Sheila thought she had found the perfect solution. Keith's fake death had been flawless. The one who had actually leaked the secret… was her.She believed that if she made the situation serious enough, Keith would eventually give in. That way, she would not have to betray Keith, and she would not lose Elliot either. She had planned for everything except one thing. She had always believed Elliot's unwavering devotion was love, when in reality, it had only been a debt of gratitude.Elliot had never loved her at all.The thought hit Sheila so hard that she instinctively rejected it. It felt as though an invisible hand had wrapped around her heart, squeezing until she could barely breathe. She refused to believe it. She refused to believe Elliot had never loved her. The mark in my palm grew hotter and hotter. The familiar warmth spread through my hand until my eyes burned. Tears slipped down my face before I even realized I was crying.Sheila hurried forward and gave a respectful nod to the elderly man who had rescued me."Thank you for saving him."Then she looked at the wounds covering my body, her eyes full of distress. She reached out her hand."Elliot, come back with me. I've already invited the finest royal physician in the kingdom. I won't let a single scar remain."I gently wiped away the tears at the corners of my eyes. A smile slowly spread across my face. She thought I was smiling because I could finally return to her side. However, I was smiling because I could finally go home. When I made no move toward her, Sheila frowned."Elliot, come here. My wedding to Keith is in three days. Your injuries can't wait any longer."I looked at her quietly. "So... you want me to stay by your side? As a lover who can never be acknowledged?"
