Unexpected

Kayla stood in front of the bathroom mirror, trying on a pair of earrings Stella gifted her when, the lights suddenly went out. She was surprised at the power outage because Mr. Volkov did look like someone who could afford a generator and hoped for the electricity to be restored within a few seconds.

She held her breath and waited a couple of minutes but no luck. There was only pitch darkness, thanks to the time being night.

“Please don’t slip…” she prayed as she felt her way out through the wet tiles and came to the window of the bedroom.

Strange enough, the courtyard was empty under the dull moonlight, not a single patrolling guard in sight. It was usually inhabited by at least five men.

“Where is everyone?” concern fluttered inside her as her eyes ran circles down the yard, trying to catch a sign of life.
