Chapter Twenty-Six: Pretty Lies and Public Threats

Ardyn's Pov

The quiet before the storm is always worse than the chaos itself.

I felt it in my chest. That low, simmering panic. Like I was sitting on a time bomb and every tick was dragging us closer to impact.

Caelum hadn’t come back to bed.

He never did that before. No matter how bad it got between us, he always came back. Claimed me. Made me forget everything but his hands and his mouth and the way he held me like he couldn’t bear not to.

But this morning, I woke up alone. The space beside me was cold.

I pulled on a robe and padded out of the room, past the long silent halls that once felt like cages and now felt like a fortress. Except the enemy wasn’t outside. She was in here, sipping coffee and smirking in designer silk.

Zephyra was sitting at the breakfast table in one of Caelum’s shirts.

Not a coincidence.

Not subtle.

She raised an eyebrow at me, like she was daring me to break the porcelain cup in her hand. "Sleep well, litt

Chapter Twenty-five: A Fire I Never Asked ForCaelum's pov I told myself I wouldn’t go to her room.I told myself Ardyn needed space, and I needed control. But control left the second Zephyra stepped across my threshold and started poisoning the air like she owned it.And Ardyn… fuck. She looked at me tonight like I was someone she didn’t recognize. Like I’d failed her, and maybe I did.Maybe I still am.I stood outside the guest room door, staring at it like it held all the answers. I could hear her breathing. Soft. Uneven. She wasn’t asleep. Just quiet. Shutting herself off like she used to when she first got here.I knocked once.No answer.I opened the door anyway. She didn’t move. Just sat on the bed with her knees pulled up, arms wrapped around herself like armor.“I didn’t sleep with her.”Her head turned slowly.“I don’t care,” she said. That was a lie. She cared. It was all over her face.“She’s trying to get inside your head,” I said. “That’s what she does. Twist things. Mi

Chapter Twenty-four: Her Perfume Still LingersArdyn's Pov I should’ve known peace was temporary. It was too quiet. Too soft. Too fragile. The kind of quiet that comes before the storm, before everything gets ripped open again. And sure enough, the storm showed up wearing red lipstick and thousand-dollar heels.Zephyra Calla Deveroux. The name alone sounds like a threat, doesn’t it?She arrived just before sunset, stepping out of a sleek black car like the mansion was still hers. Like she belonged here more than I ever would. The way she looked at the front door—calm, smug, hungry—made my chest twist.I was in the hallway when I heard Lucien open the door.He said her name like it hurt to say. “Zephyra.”And her laugh—Jesus. Like champagne fizzing over ice. Sweet and poisonous.“Still know how to pronounce it. I’m impressed.”I don’t know why I didn’t walk away. I should’ve. I should’ve run back to Caelum’s room, buried myself in his damn blankets, and pretended the world didn’t exis

Chapter Twenty-Three: This Time, StayArdyn's Pov The thing about healing with someone who broke you is that it never feels clean. It’s jagged. Messy. You keep waiting for the next slice, flinching when they reach for you even when you want them to. Maybe especially when you want them to.The morning after I came back, I didn’t sleep much. I kept watching the rise and fall of his chest like it might change shape if I blinked. He’d stayed on the other side of the bed—barely close enough to touch—his body curled like a man afraid of himself. And in a weird way, that scared me more than anything else.Because Caelum wasn’t afraid of anyone.Except, maybe… me.And that kind of power terrified the hell out of me.I sat up, the blanket slipping from my shoulders. My body ached, not from sex this time, but from tension I hadn’t fully let go of. The emotional kind that lodges in your muscles and makes you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck.I padded quietly to the bathroom, turned on the t

Chapter Twenty-Two: What Silence BreaksArdyn's Pov The cold hit harder than I expected. Not the temperature, but the kind that seeps into your chest when you realize you've got nowhere to go and no one waiting for you. The kind of cold that wraps itself around your ribs and squeezes until you're numb.I kept walking. Past streetlights that flickered, past people who didn’t look twice. My dress was torn at the hem, I could feel a scrape burning on my knee, and my chest was tight with everything I hadn’t said. Everything I couldn’t take back.He let me walk away.I don’t know what I wanted him to do. Maybe stop me. Maybe fight for me. Or maybe I just wanted to prove that I could still leave—that I wasn’t completely trapped in him.But every step I took away from him felt like tearing skin from bone.I didn’t have a plan. My phone was dead. My legs ached. And the streets got darker the farther I moved from the main road. I passed a shuttered bar with broken glass on the sidewalk and a

Chapter Twenty-one: The Sound of Her ScreamingCaelum's pov The scream punched through the night like a gunshot."Caelum!"My blood went cold. That voice. Her voice.Ardyn."Did you hear that?" I snapped, already sprinting down the alley.Lucien didn’t even answer. His footsteps thundered behind me. We tore through the back streets, heartbeats racing. Every part of me burned. Her scream had been sharp, panicked. She was in danger."Ardyn!" I roared into the dark, my voice cracking.I didn’t care about the shadows. Didn’t care who saw me. The only thing that mattered was getting to her before something worse did.We turned the corner and found them.Three men. Hooded. Rough. They had her backed into a wall near a dumpster, one of them reaching for her arm. Her dress was torn at the hem, dirt on her knees. Her eyes were wide, terrified, but burning. She looked like she wanted to fight, but her hands were trembling. They hadn’t seen us yet.I didn’t wait.I grabbed the first one by the
