Jenn’s POV
Alpha Wade announced his new fated over breakfast, and the pack watched me die on my feet. My chosen mate – the man who claimed my heart and my bond – smiled at a criminal and called her his destiny. If I hadn’t been sitting, I might have collapsed. The dining hall fell so silent that even the chilly breeze seemed to pause. The scent of eggs and spiced broth turned my stomach. Everyone froze, as all eyes in the hall turned to stare at him, then me. But all I saw was Wade – my husband and Alpha – unable to meet my eyes. He stood at the head of the long dining table, fingers tight around the chair he hadn’t dared sit in. His throat bobbed as he swallowed hard. “Jenn… I know this might appear unusual. But this is the best I can do for myself, and her.” I didn’t move. Couldn’t. “Say it again,” I whispered, my voice steady only because the Luna in me refused to crack. “Repeat what you just said.” Wade flinched. The Alpha – my Alpha – flinched. “I found my fated,” he murmured, the words sounding like they hurt to speak. “I don’t know how. But I found her.” My heart broke, but I forced the words out. “And who is she?” Before he could answer, every head in the hall jerked toward the large double entrance doors to the dining hall. And she walked in. Morgan Wilton. If I was dying before, this time I felt like a living corpse. My heart shattered to a million pieces. This was her? His fated mate? I clenched my fist, steeling my already fraying nerves. Her hands were still red‑marked from the silver cuffs she’d worn just days ago. Cuffs Wade himself had locked after she attacked him during a border breach. An enemy spy. A threat. A criminal. And now… his fated. She looked nothing like a prisoner today. Her chin was lifted, eyes bright with a dangerous fire. And she moved with a confidence that felt a lot like mockery. “Good morning,” she said with a smirk, coming to stand beside Wade. “You started without me.” I gasped. When did their relationship evolve to this level? My pulse was hammered. “You shouldn’t be out of the cells,” I said before I could stop myself. “What are you doing here?” Morgan smirked. “Alpha Wade disagreed. He invited me to dinner. You can ask him that question yourself.” I turned to my husband – the man I trusted, the man who once swore on his life that nothing could tear us apart. He stepped towards her, instinctively shielding her from the hostility that was probably radiating from me. That hurt more than his announcement. He raised his hands. “Jenn, please remain calm. This situation is… complicated.” I let out a humorless laugh. “Complicated,” I echoed. “She attacked you, Wade. You imprisoned her. And now she’s in our dining hall claiming a place at your side. Wade, in case you haven’t noticed, she’s our prisoner.” Morgan shrugged. “The Goddess is indeed mysterious.” She glanced at him, bold and unafraid. “Isn’t she?” Wade’s jaw clenched, but he answered anyway. “Yes, you’re right. If she paired me with my enemy’s daughter, then she must have her reason for it. I can’t fight the bond. I can’t fight my destiny” I rose to my feet and stepped forward, refusing to be small. “Your destiny?” I almost laughed. “Are you mocking me? You can bring her into the pack if you must,” I said. “But she will not live in this house. She cannot. I will not accept it.” Gasps filled the room, but I didn’t care. Luna or not, wife or not, I had earned my place here with blood and loyalty. Wade looked torn in half – his wolf pacing behind his eyes, his shoulders trembling with restraint. “Jenn…” He lowered his voice, almost pleading. “Please understand. I didn’t ask for this.” “Neither did I,” I whispered. Morgan crossed her arms and sneered. “You can’t forbid the fated bond.” “I can forbid you from entering my home,” I snapped. “And I am.” Wade squeezed his eyes shut like the tension physically hurt him. He loved me. I knew that. I felt it in the bond we still shared. But fate had lodged a knife in his chest and twisted. “All she needs is a roof over her head and a place where she can be comfortable.” Wade’s eyes pierced mine pleadingly. “No.” The words came as a shock to both Wade and everyone around us. I had no idea why he decided to make this conversation public, but I couldn’t soften the blow any more than I could quench the uneasiness in my heart. “Jenn, what do you mean no? My wolf…” “Your wolf will be just fine,” I said matter-of-factly. “We’ll find a good pack for her since you now feel like you owe her something after she almost killed you, but she will not stay here. You have to reject her. That’s the best you can do for yourself.” “Jenn,” Wade said in his serious Alpha voice, stepping back to the girl’s side protectively even if it was evident that she didn’t need his protection. “Think about this. I wouldn’t ask this if it wasn’t the only choice I have. I am the leader of our pack and my wolf is going crazy for our mate. We can’t risk…” “I can’t risk your life, Wade.” I said, cutting him off. Somewhere along the line, I’d forgotten to address him with his Alpha title as I always did when we were in the presence of company, but that didn’t matter. “This woman is our enemy. She tried to kill you! I’m sure rejecting your fated won’t be easy, but it’s what you must do. We have no idea what other tricks she has up her sleeve.” Wade’s face twitched, his eyes darkening as he mulled over my words. I was right, he knew it in the depths of his heart. Stepping closer, I took his hand. “Think about what’s best for the pack. This woman isn’t. She may be your fated mate, but she’s also the daughter of your enemy.” Wade nodded, his eyes dropped as he turned to face Morgan behind him, “Morgan”, he began. “I am sorry but I would have to reject you, I Alpha Wade Blackstrand of the Moonlit Pack rejects you Morgan…” Morgan stepped forward, grabbing his arm and turning him to face her. “You can’t reject me.” she hissed. “You won’t do that. This woman is just your chosen mate, I am your fated and rejecting me will affect my wolf and yours. Do you want that?” Seeing that Wade still looked torn, she continued. “I can help you with intel about my father. Think about it, I will be a great asset to you and your pack.” Turning to me, she smirked as if this was a challenge and she knew she was winning. Well, she wasn’t far from the truth. Wade was already leaning towards her. I could feel his hesitation thrumming in our bond. I knew immediately that I needed to do something. “You chose me, Wade.” I said. “Think of what you said to me five years ago. The promise you made me.” “STOP,” Wade growled loudly, his eyes glistening light blue, showing his wolf was at the surface, “you are torturing her.”Jenn’s POV I was on my knees beside him before I understood I’d moved. My hands pressed against the wound, and I pushed every ounce of power I had into him – the dark wolf howling, Liam’s strength flooding through the bond, everything I had. But the poisoned light drank it all. “Vicktor –” He smiled. The hard lines of his face softened, the weight he’d been carrying for twenty years lifting all at once. “He’s dead. Grant is dead.” His hand found mine. His grip was still strong, even now. “Tell my people I died well.” “You’re not dying –” “I am.” His eyes drifted closed. “Your father would be proud of you, Jenn. And I can finally join them there. My family… they’re waiting for me.” His eyes finally closed and his hand went slack in mine. I knelt there in the blood, my hands still pressed against his wound, and I couldn’t move. Couldn’t speak. Could only stare at his face – at the peace that had finally settled over his features. Liam’s hand found my shoulder. He didn’t try to pu
Jenn’s POV “You know,” I said, “I used to be afraid of you.” His lip curled. “You should still be afraid of me, little Alpha.” “No.” I stepped forward. The dark wolf pressed so close to the surface that my voice came out layered and strange, echoing against the ancient stone. “I was afraid of you when I didn’t know what I was. When I thought you were the monster under my bed, the reason my parents died, the shadow that would hunt me forever.” My boots scuffed against the stone as I halted at the base of the platform. The heirloom’s light washed over my face, cold as a dead hand against my skin. “But you’re not a monster. You’re just a man who spent his whole life chasing power that was never his to hold.” His hands shook harder. The heirloom’s pulse quickened, the colors swirling faster. “I held this realm in my fist for decades –” “You held nothing.” I tilted my head. “You killed my parents because you couldn’t have what you wanted. You sent your daughter into my husband’s bed
Jenn’s POV Liam’s hand found the small of my back as he appeared at my side. The mate bond hummed between us, and where I’d felt his fear coiled tight the night before, there was only stillness now. I didn’t say anything. I reached back and pressed my palm against his chest, right over his heart, and felt the steady thump of it against my fingers. Vicktor caught my eye from across the space. His fingers drummed once against the desk before he pushed himself to his feet. Behind him, Osiris stood apart from the others, his dark eyes fixed on the mountains. He’d been silent since the council ended. The dark wolf uncoiled beneath my ribs, a slow stretch of heat. “I guess it’s time to end this.” The convoy rolled out as the first pale light of dawn bled over the mountains. I rode in the lead vehicle with Liam at the wheel and Vicktor in the seat behind us, his blade across his knees. Behind us, the Fox soldiers followed in tight formation, their green and silver armor catching the mo
Jenn’s POV I swallowed the burning ache in my throat. “Nothing will happen to me.” I said with a confidence I didn’t feel. “I promise.” Alice pulled me into a hug then, and her arms wrapped around me with a fierce, desperate strength that reminded me of every time she had held me as a child after my parents died. I buried my face in her shoulder and breathed in the scent of her. When I finally pulled back, her cheeks were wet but her jaw was set. “I love you,” I whispered. “I love you too.” She cupped my face in both hands – the same gesture Liam used, I realized suddenly, the same tenderness – and her thumbs brushed the tears from my cheeks. “Now go. End this. And come back to me.” The estate was quiet when I finally made my way back to our quarters. The moon hung heavy in the sky, nearly full, and its pale light spilled through the window and pooled silver on the bed where Liam was waiting for me. He'd shed his jacket and kicked off his boots by the door. He was sitting on th
Jenn’s POV I didn't see Morgan arrive so much as feel her – a sudden, sharp tug of emotion that rippled through the courtyard like a stone dropped into still water. A strangled sound escaped her throat, and when I turned, the tears were already streaming down her cheeks in waves. Someone had taken the baby from her arms. A wise decision, as it turned out, because it gave her enough space to wring her hands together as she bit down on her bottom lip until I was certain it would bruise. “T – Tristan...” Her voice came out as a choked sob, barely recognizable. Tristan crossed the threshold in four long strides and engulfed her in his arms, pulling her against his chest with a desperation that spoke of months of separation and the kind of fear that only faded when you could finally touch the person you'd been terrified of losing. Morgan's fingers clutched at the torn fabric of his shirt, her shoulders shaking with the force of her sobs, and he held her like she was the only solid th
Jenn’s POV “Grant,” she gasped. “His name is Grant. He’s been on the Council for three hundred years. He’s worn a dozen bodies. But this one… he’s been waiting for this body for centuries. A vessel strong enough to hold an ancient power.” “And the heirloom?” I pressed. “What does it have to do with this ancient power? Why do you guys want it?” “It – it’s the key. Your blood – not the ancient power that lives inside you – activates it. Without you, the heirloom is just a stone.” Her fingers clawed at my wrist. “Please. I’ve told you everything.” I released her, watching as she collapsed onto the rocks, gasping, her body shuddering with silent sobs. Liam shifted back to his human form and stood beside me, his chest still heaving from the fight. Blood streaked his skin, but none of it was his. “Is she dead?” he asked. “No. But her power is broken.” I bent and picked up the silver ring. The obsidian stone was cold in my palm, as cold as the woman who had worn it. “And she’s going to
Jenn’s POV Liam’s thoughts were a constant in my mind now, his emotions and feelings too, and right now, he felt elated, contented, and scared all at once. His emotions were almost hard to decipher from mine, but thankfully I had a little experience from being bonded with Wade. Still, this was di
Jenn’s POV I felt much better the next morning. Maybe because once again, I was waking up on his bed, maybe because of the shiver that ran down my spine at the sight of him. He was stunning under the morning light and if healed whatever was left of both my heart and body. I reached out, running
Jenn’s POV I stared at her, my mind struggling to catch up. Tristan. The broken man I’d found at the edge of my territory, half dead, covered in scars. I’d saved him without thinking, without expecting anything in return. “He’s here?” I asked. “Tristan is here?” Bree nodded. “He’s in the infirma
Jenn’s POV The door clicked shut behind them, and I was alone with my thoughts. The thoughts were too heavy. There were too many of them. I’d noticed Bree’s guilty glances.
