Vorian's POV

The cafeteria is half full and louder than usual. Trays clatter and someone laughs too hard at a corner table.

I sit with Zephyr and Silas near the window, there are plates in front of us, the first real quiet lunch we have had in days. For once no one is talking about stocks, leaks, or board votes.

That peace lasts about four minutes.

A woman from HR walks over with a smile that is already too familiar. I recognize her vaguely; recruitment side, always at the welcome sessions fo

Vorian's POV I step into the elevator with Zephyr beside me. When we reach the executive floor, it dings and the doors of the elevator open.I am still reviewing the overnight market summary when Silas walks into the executive hallway with a folder under his arm and three department heads trailing behind him. I recognize them as the heads of Marketing, PR and the Legal team. Silas finishes a sentence to them without slowing down, gives a final instruction, and dismisses them with a short nod. They scatter in different directions, only then does he look up and see Zephyr and me stepping out of the elevator. He checks his watch, then looks at us again.“You two are just getting in?” he asks.“Yes,” I answer.Silas turns to Zephyr. “I know you two are in love, but do not let Vorian corrupt you with lateness.”Zephyr opens his mouth, then closes it again, caught between amusement and defense. I speak before he has to.“I have never been late,” I say. “We are not late now. You are the o

Zephyr's POV The day went by quickly, Vorian and I leave the company building after bidding goodbye to Silas. We walk to the garage. I get into Vorian's car since he say he will drive me home today.Vorian parks outside my parents’ house and turns off the engine. For a moment neither of us moves. The street is quiet. Light from the living room window spills onto the front steps.“Are you sure about this?” I ask.“You invited me,” he answers.“I said you could drop me off. You decided to come inside.”He looks at me. “I can leave.”“No,” I say. “Come in.”We walk up the path together. I unlock the door and step in first. The smell of my mother’s cooking hits me immediately; pepper soup, rice, something fried. My father is in the living room. My mother calls from the kitchen.“Zephyr? You are back home early.”“I brought someone,” I call back. That brings both of them into the hallway. My father stops first. My mother follows and wipes her hands on a towel. They both recognize him at t

For once no one is talking about stocks, leaks, or board votes. That peace lasts about four minutes.A woman from HR walks over with a smile that is already too familiar. I recognize her vaguely; recruitment side, always at the welcome sessions for new hires. She stops directly beside Silas and angles her body toward him like the rest of the table does not exist.“Silas,” she says, voice bright. “I was hoping I would run into you. You disappeared so fast after the leadership briefing last week.”Silas looks up, polite but already cautious. “Busy week.”“You should let someone take you out for coffee so you can actually breathe,” she continues. “I know a place two streets down. Quiet. Good music. My treat.”Zephyr glances at me. I keep my

Zephyr's POV The boardroom is full. Every seat at the long table is taken. Screens are lit. The atmosphere is heavier than a normal quarterly meeting.I sit in my usual place to Vorian’s left, tablet ready, pen still. Silas is on his right. Miles sits further down the table, expression calm, hands folded.Vorian stands. He does not need notes.“For the past several months a small internal team has been building a new defensive AI system,” he begins. “Its name is Aegis. Today I am confirming that the core is complete and stable.”A few board members exchange glances. Someone sits forward.Vorian continues in the same voice. “Aegis is designed to protect our critical systems from external and internal threats. It can detect intrusion patterns, isolate damaged sectors, and rebuild from clean states without shutting down primary operations. In controlled testing it has held under sustained multi-vector attacks for extended periods with minimal false positives.”He nods once to Jake, who

Selene's POV Zephyr walks through the front door a little after seven. He drops his bag by the wall and stretches his neck like the day sat on him the whole way home. I am in the living room with a book I am not really reading. Our parents are in the kitchen finishing up dinner.“You look less dead than yesterday,” I say.He glances at me. “High praise.”“I try,” I answer. “How was work?”He shrugs and sits on the arm of the couch. “Busy. But better than last week. The stock stopped acting like it wanted to jump off a building.”I mark my page and close the book. “That offshore thing was ugly. Your boss must have been furious.”“He was focused,” Zephyr says. “Furious would be too simple.”I watch him for a second. This is the opening I need, but I cannot rush it. If I ask about Silas too directly, he will notice. Zephyr is quiet, not stupid.“You work closely with him, right?” I ask. “Vorian.”“Every day,” he says.“And the others? The senior people. Do you deal with them a lot?”He

  • Bound By The Desk    98: Forward

Zephyr's POV We arrive at the building within a few minutes of each other. Vorian steps out of his car just as I cross the street from the train. He waits by the entrance without making it obvious. I fall into step beside him as we walk through the lobby. The security at the entrance nods. A few early employees glance our way, but no one stares the way they did during the scandal. The air in the building feels lighter. In the elevator I stand a proper distance from him. Two other people ride with us. When they step off on a lower floor, the doors close again and we are alone for a few seconds.“You slept,” Vorian says. It is not a question.“I did,” I answer. “You?”“Enough,” he says. The doors open on the executive floor. We step out together and walk toward his office. Silas is already there, standing by the window with a coffee in his hand. He turns when he hears us.“Both of you on time,” Silas says. “I am impressed.”“Do not get used to it,” Vorian replies.I set my bag down and

Zephyr’s POV “Man, this place is insane,” I mutter, sitting at my new desk, papers and screens everywhere. My head is still spinning from meeting Vorian Rex; those eyes, that voice, like he could burn me alive and I would thank him. I dismiss the feeling.Silas saunters by, coffee in grasp, smilin

Vorian’s POV I stepped out of my black Maserati, the morning sun hitting NexusVibe’s glass tower like a spotlight.Silas slams the car door, grinning. “Vorian. Zephyr’s POV “Zephyr, you are gonna burn a hole in that plate if you continue gazing,” Dad utters.I snap out of my thoughts, grabbing the bowl. “Just thinking, Dad. Big day tomorrow. Vorian’s POV “Vorian, if you do not devour this roast, I am disowning you,” Mom utters, her voice piercing but soothing, gliding a plate of herb-crusted beef across the dining table. The chandelier shines off her gemstone necklace, making her look seem she is still commanding a gala, not our famil
