Adrian did not move for a moment. His hands were still clawed, even his shirt still torn, but his eyes had gone very still, like something inside him had shut a door.

"How long ago?" he asked Helena.

"Ten minutes, maybe less." Helena's voice shook. "The guard at the safe room is dead, they went in through the vents."

"They planned this," Adrian said quietly. "The message, the loud sound, all of it was to pull me away from her."

"What do we do?" Mira asked.

Adrian looked at her like he had forgotten she was there. "We will do nothing. I will go and you will stay here, with Helena, the guards will be on every door."

"You cannot go alone," the man with yellow eyes said, stepping forward. "Not against the whole Draven pack."

"I am not going alone. I am going now, before they get far." Adrian's voice left no room for argument. "Marcus, gather six men. We move in five minutes."

Marcus nodded and disappeared down the hall, already shouting orders.

Mira grabbed Adrian's arm before he could turn away. "Wait. Just wait one second."

"Mira, I do not have a second to spare."

"Then take it anyway." Her voice came out sharper than she meant it to. "You just told me I am your wife, maybe your mate, whatever that means. If something happens to you tonight, I am the one left standing here not knowing anything. Tell me something, just tell me anything."

Adrian's jaw tightened, but he did not pull away from her hand. For a moment, something that showed helplessness softened in his face.

"If I do not come back," he said quietly, "Helena has instructions. You will be taken care of, you will be safe."

"That is not what I asked." Mira replied.

"It is the only answer I have time to give you." He pulled his arm free, gently this time, and stepped back. "Stay inside, stay with Helena. Please."

He said please like it cost him something to say it at all. Then he was gone, moving fast down the hallway, Marcus and five other men went behind him.

Mira stood alone in the wrecked study, broken glass under her feet, the smell of blood and smoke still hanging in the air.

"Come, Miss Voss," Helena said gently. "There is nothing more you can do here tonight."

"There has to be something." Mira beckoned.

"There is." Helena's eyes were kind but firm. "You can survive the night, that is what he needs from you right now."

The hours crawled slower than any night Mira had known. She sat in the drawing room with Helena, a fire burning low, both of them were silent listening for any sound from outside.

"Tell me about the Dravens," Mira said finally, she was not able to sit with the silence any longer.

Helena hesitated. "They were allies once upon a time. Adrian's grandfather and their alpha built the eastern territories together, split the profits fair, kept the peace between species."

"What happened?" Mira curiosly asked.

"Money," Helena said simply. "And a woman, if the old stories are true. The Draven alpha's daughter and Adrian's father were once promised to each other, then his father chose someone else."

Mira whispered, "Adrian's mother."

Helena nodded. "The alliance broke apart within a year. The Dravens have wanted revenge for two generations now, dressed up as territory disputes and business grievances but underneath, it has always been personal."

"How about Adrian? Is there something personal for him too?"

Something shined across Helena's face. "That is not my story to tell, Miss Voss."

Surprisingly to Mira, the front doors slammed open and voices filled the entry hall.

Mira was on her feet running toward the sound before Helena could stop her.

Adrian stood in the entrance, blood on his hands, with a long cut across his cheekbone already healing before her eyes. Behind him were two of his men carrying Elena between them, she was unconscious but still breathing.

"You got her back," Mira breathed.

"Yes, we got her back," Adrian said, voice hoarse with exhaustion. "It cost us alot."

"What do you mean?" Mira asked.

His eyes met hers, tired and full of something she could not quite name. "They let us take her too easily, they wanted us to think we won something tonight."

"I do not understand." Mira said.

Adrian stepped closer, close enough that she could see every line of exhaustion carved into his face. "The Dravens do not make mistakes like that. If they let Elena go without a real fight, it means they already got what they actually came for."

Mira's stomach dropped. "What did they come for?"

Behind Adrian, Marcus appeared in the doorway, his face pale, something small and folded in his hand.

"Sir," Marcus said carefully. "This was left on the safe room floor addressed to you."

Adrian took the paper, and Mira watched his face change as he read it.

"What does it say?" Mira asked.

Adrian's eyes lifted to hers slowly, and for the first time since she had met him, she saw real fear behind the gold.

"They know about the bond," he said quietly. "They know what you could become to me if I let it finish forming. And they are giving me one week to end this marriage, or they promise to take you the way they almost took Elena tonight."

He held the paper out to her, his hand not quite steady.

At the bottom of the paper were sharp and deliberate handwriting, were seven words that made the room feel suddenly very cold.

One week, Ashfeld. Choose her, or lose everything.

"What kind of thing?" Adrian asked sharply."A box," Helena replied. "It's small and made of wood, and there's a note attached, but sir, I don't think you want me to read the note over the radio.""Read it anyway," Adrian said. "We don't have time to be careful."There was a short pause, and they could hear papers moving through the radio."It says..." Helena began. Her voice became more serious as she read."A gift for the bride, so she understands exactly what she's marrying into. Open it together, or not at all. It is your choice."Mira was anxious. "Don't open it, Helena. Wait for us." Mira warned."I wasn't planning to open a strange box from Corin Draven by myself, Miss Voss," Helena replied. She tried to sound calm, but Mira could hear the fear in her voice."We're not going back to the estate," Adrian said. "Not now, because Corin has already moved the chapel plans forward.""Then what should I do with the box?" Helena asked."Leave it exactly where it is," Adrian said. "Don't

  • Bound To The Broken Heir   Chapter Twenty Two: Kael Draven

Everyone stared at the radio as if it had suddenly become dangerous."How did you get this frequency?" Adrian asked, quickly grabbing the radio."Elias gave it to me years ago," Kael replied. "He told me to keep it in case a night like this ever happened. I never thought I would actually need it."Elias became very still. "Kael. It's been a long time.""Twenty-two years," Kael said. "I would recognize your voice even through all this static, old man.""You two know each other?" Adrian asked."We were on the same side once," Elias said. "The night everything went wrong.""I need to know something first," Adrian said into the radio. "Are you loyal to Corin or not?"There was a long silence in the room, however, Mira waited nervously for Kael's answer."I'm loyal to my pack," Kael finally said. "Corin is the leader of the pack right now, so that used to mean I was loyal to him too. But lately, things don't feel the same anymore.""That's not a clear answer," Marcus said."It's the only h

  • Bound To The Broken Heir   Chapter Twenty One: The Night It Happened

"Inside, all of you, now," Adrian said quickly as he looked up and down the dark street.Everyone went back inside the small brick building while Elias walked slowly with the help of his cane. Helena locked the door behind them and closed the thin curtain over the only window.Elena sat fully upright on the small bed. She was wide awake and staring at the older man. She looked at him while trying to remember a face from a very distant time."Do I know you?" she asked."You were four years old the last time I held you," Elias said gently. "You were too young to remember me.""You worked for us, and you were part of our security team just like Thomas Voss. You and Thomas were close, weren't you?" Robert said slowly. He sat down heavily in the nearest chair because his legs were too weak to keep him standing. "Closer than anyone knew," Elias replied. "Thomas and I worked together for many years before either family trusted us with their important secrets.""Then start there," Adrian sai

  • Bound To The Broken Heir   Chapter Twenty: Blood on Both Sides

Nobody spoke for a long time as the car continued moving, while the orange lights from the streets passed across the windows."Say that again," Adrian finally said. "But slowly.""Seraphine Draven," Mira said. "That's the name written on this certificate. It says she is my mother.""That doesn't make sense," Marcus said from the back seat. "Corin has never talked about having a sister who left the pack. He has never even mentioned someone named Seraphine.""Maybe he doesn't know," Mira said. "Or maybe he knows everything and has been hiding it from everyone."Adrian held the steering wheel tightly."If your mother was a Draven and your father was human, and your father worked security for my family, then their meeting probably wasn't an accident either.""Nothing about tonight feels like an accident," Mira said bitterly. "I'm starting to think my whole life was planned."Marcus leaned forward between the seats. "There's more inside the bag; look at this photograph," he said.He handed

  • Bound To The Broken Heir   Chapter Nineteen: Her Real Identity

"Say that again," Adrian said as he quickly took the radio from Marcus's belt. "You said there are other people and they're not Corin's men?""I'm serious," Marcus replied, breathing heavily. Adrian could hear fighting in the background. "These men aren't wearing the same clothes as Corin's men. They don't even have the scent of our pack either. I don't know who sent them.""Get Samuel out of there," Adrian ordered. "Now.""I'm trying," Marcus said. A loud grunt, then a heavy thud, came over the radio. "There are at least four of them. I need help."Adrian was already putting on his jacket. "I'm coming.""You can't leave," Robert said. He struggled to stand even though he was still weak. "What about Corin's deadline? Mira? The chapel? Everything we're supposed to do?""Marcus is in danger right now," Adrian replied. "I'm not going to leave him there to die just because we have a deadline.""I'm coming with you," Mira said."No," Adrian said as he quickly walked toward the door."Adria

  • Bound To The Broken Heir   Chapter Eighteen: Message To Her

"Say that again," Adrian said, grabbing the radio."They're at the gates," Helena said, while sounding fast. "They are not many, just a small group, but they're not trying to break in this time. They're just standing there and calling for Mira.""Calling how?" Adrian asked."Shouting over and over again, saying they have a message, and it's only for her," Helena said.Mira experienced a sudden shock. "That doesn't make sense. Corin already told us what he wants, then why would he send someone to the estate too?""Maybe it's not Corin," Marcus said slowly. "Maybe it's someone else entirely.""Who else would even know to ask for me by name?" Mira questioned.Nobody answered that, and there was deep silence in the small room."Helena, can you see who's talking?" Adrian asked."One man," Helena said. "He is older; he is not dressed like Corin's usual people. He wore no mask, and no gun; that is all I can see. He says he'll wait exactly ten minutes, then he leaves, message undelivered."A
