LOGINMira held his hand, it was warm and solid, not looking like a man’s hand who had just fought through the night.
"Where are we going?" she asked. "Somewhere only family sees," Adrian said. "You are family now, whether you like it or not." He led her down the stairs, past the east study, past a hallway she had not noticed before, hidden behind a bookshelf that swung open at his touch. "You do not have to be afraid," Adrian said, glancing back at her. "I am not afraid," Mira lied. He almost smiled at that, because he knew she was afraid. At the bottom of the stairs was a wide room lit by torch light instead of an electric bulb. Mira's breath caught as she saw people here, but a few people. She saw a man with sharp yellow eyes guarding a door, a woman near the far wall and in the center of the room, on a low bed, was a young woman, pale, bandaged, breathing shallowly. "Elena," Adrian said, and his voice broke slightly on the name. "Your sister?" Mira whispered. He nodded and moved to her side, kneeling by the bed. Elena's eyes were open, unfocused at first, then sharpening when she saw him. "Adrian," Elena rasped. "The Dravens found me, they knew where I would be." "Who told them?" Adrian's voice went hard and dangerous. "I do not know but it is someone close. Someone who knew my schedule." Elena's eyes shifted past him, landing on Mira. "Who is that?" "My wife," Adrian simply replied. Elena's pale face twisted into something between shock and disbelief. "You married her now with everything happening?" "It was arranged before any of this started," Adrian said. "She had nothing to do with it." "Everyone has something to do with it once they are inside these walls," Elena said. Her eyes stayed on Mira, studying her the way people study something they are not sure they can trust. "Does she know what we are?" "She is about to know." Adrian replied. Mira stepped closer, she was unable to stop herself. She asked, "What are you? All of you? Please, someone just tell me." The room went quiet. The man with yellow eyes by the door adjusted his position and the woman with the strange shadow tilted her head curiously. Adrian stood and faced her fully, looking confidently. "We are lycans," he said. "Wolves that walk as men. My family has ruled this city in shadow for generations, not with wolves alone, but with money, contracts, and fear, all while the world thinks we are nothing more than a broken family no one wants to look at." Mira's mind raced, trying to fit the pieces together. The wheelchair, the rumors, the whispered pity from people at parties. "The wheelchair is a mask," she said slowly. "The best kind," Adrian said. "No one suspects a cripple of ruling half the city's economy. No one looks twice at a man they pity." "And the gold in your eyes, the speed." She asked quietly. "The wolf," he said. "It comes out when I am threatened, or when something matters enough to make me lose control." Mira looked past him, looking at Elena on the bed and also the strange watchful figures around the room. "And the Dravens? Who are they?" She asked. Adrian said. "They are our rivals. They want what my family has, the money, the territory, the influence. They have wanted it for years and never found a way in." His jaw tightened. "Until now." "They know about the marriage?" Mira asked quietly, understanding the dawning cold and heavy in her chest. "They know," Adrian confirmed. "A human bride, unconnected to any species, no protection of her own. To them you look like the perfect weakness to exploit." "Then why marry me at all?" Mira demanded. "If it puts everyone in danger, why not marry someone from your own world?" Something flickered across Adrian's face, quick and complicated. "Because my father arranged this match before he died, believing an outside bride, someone untouched by specific politics would be harder for enemies to predict. He thought it would protect the family. He did not live long enough to see if he was right." Elena made a soft, painful sound from the bed, and Adrian was at her side again instantly, all his focus narrowing to his sister. "Rest," he told her gently. "We will finish this conversation later." "There might not be a later," Elena whispered, her eyes already closed with exhaustion. "The Dravens will not wait, Adrian. They will come for the girl before they come for you. It is easier that way." The words settled over Mira like a stone dropped into still water, spreading cold ripples through her chest. Adrian turned to her, his expression was unreadable, but something in his eyes had shifted, like a switch had flipped somewhere deep inside him. "You wanted the truth," he said quietly. "Now you have it and now you understand why you cannot leave this house unprotected, not even for a moment." "You are saying I am a target." Mira asked. "I am saying," Adrian said, stepping closer until barely any space remained between them, "that from this moment forward, protecting you is not a courtesy, Mira. It is survival for both of us." Before Mira could respond, a sharp loud and long cut through the night above them at a distance. Every lycan in the room went still at once, heads turning toward the ceiling as though they could see straight through it. The man with yellow eyes spoke for the first time, with his voice low and urgent. "That is not one of ours." Adrian's whole body tensed, gold flooding back into his eyes in an instant. "They are already here," he said."How close?" Adrian was already moving toward the stairs."Two minutes, or maybe less," the voice on the radio said. "Sir, there are a lot of them.""Define a lot."There was a pause, a very long silence."More than we've got," the guard said finally.Marcus swore under his breath. "That's not an answer; that's a body count waiting to happen.""It's the only answer he's got," Adrian snapped. "Get everyone to the main floor. Now."They moved fast up through the dark; Lena, on the other hand, took Mira along by the wrist without either of them really noticing they'd grabbed each other. The torches had burned low, and the stairwell felt narrower than it had an hour ago, like the whole house had shrunk around them."This doesn't make sense," Mira said, while taking the steps two at a time. "Why send a photo about your father, threaten a sunrise deadline, and then attack hours early? Why lie about the timing at all?""Because he wanted us planning around the wrong clock," Marcus said. "To
"What do you mean by empty?" Mira's voice cracked in the dark."I mean exactly what I said." Adrian’s voice came from somewhere in the darkness to her left. She turned, but she couldn’t see him. Then came the sharp sound of a match striking. Which brought a weak flame suddenly to life, revealing Adrian’s face. He looked pale, and his eyes were fixed on something behind her.“There’s a headstone,” he whispered. “...and a coffin.”For a moment, neither of them moved. Adrian’s voice dropped even lower. “But there’s nothing inside.”"Your father faked his death?" Marcus asked, pulling himself up off the floor, still pressing a hand to the cut on his forehead."I don't know," Adrian said. "I found it empty two years after the funeral. I never told anyone because I didn't know what it meant, and honestly, I was scared to find out.""So what's in that photograph?" Mira asked.Adrian held it up to the torchlight. It showed an old man, standing in front of a warehouse Mira didn't recognize. Hi
"Elena!" Adrian's voice cracked through the dark hallway. There was no answer."Flashlights shined bright." Marcus was already digging one out of his jacket."Adrian, everything happening isn't a coincidence," Mira said, sticking close to Adrian's side. "They hit the gate, hit the kitchen, and now Elena's door is open. That's three things happening at once. This obviously was perfectly planned down to this minute.""I know," Adrian said, already moving toward the stairs."Wait." Lena grabbed his arm, and he actually stopped, which surprised Mira. "Adrian, listen to me. If someone's already inside, running down there blind is exactly what got Elena taken the first time.""So what do you want me to do? Stand here?""I want you to think for one second before you run into another trap." Lena's voice was sharp now, all the crying gone out of it. "You're not thinking; you're reacting, and that's how Corin wins wars."Adrian's jaw ticked. "You know him better than any of us, so tell me what
The shot hit the ground inches from Lena's feet."Get down!" Adrian grabbed Mira and pulled her behind the stone gatepost, his whole body curling over hers like a shield.Another shot cracked through the dark, and this one hit Marcus's shoulder. He staggered but did not fall."Marcus!" Mira shouted."I'm fine, Mira, just move." Marcus fired back into the trees, and two of his men scattered toward the treeline, with guns up.Lena was screaming somewhere behind them, still tied and exposed to danger. "Adrian, please, cut me loose." She cried."Stay down." Adrian yelled at her, but she wasn't listening, she was crawling toward the gate, dragging her bound hands through the mud."She's going to get herself killed," Mira said."She might already be the reason we're getting shot at," Adrian said through his teeth.Boooooom!!! There came another shot, this one hit the gatepost right above their heads, sending stone chips flying."They're not trying to kill you," Marcus called out, ducking lo
Adrian was already moving before the guard finished speaking.'Show me,' he shouted and took the radio from Marcus."Sir, the camera feed is up now," Marcus said.A tiny screen sparked to life on Marcus’s tablet. Mira elbowed herself close enough to see it too, ignoring Adrian’s look. There was a woman who stood at the rain-soaked iron gates, under the security lights. Her hair colour was dark, she wore a torn dress and hands tied in front of her. She was saying something the camera audio couldn't capture."Be audible," Adrian barked. Then the static sound cleared, and her voice was heard, sounding desperate."Adrian! Adrian, please, it's me."Adrian's whole body went still."It can't be," he said softly."Who is she?" Mira asked. On hearing that voice, Helena had gone pale. "Sir. That sounds like—"…And it sounded like... "I know who you think it sounds like," Adrian interrupted, and the tone made Mira raise an eyebrow. "It cannot be her. She died three years ago.""Who?" Mira called
Helena was holding the phone away from her body as if it were a hot coal."He is waiting," she said. and he will not wait long.""Put it on speaker," Adrian instructed."Sir, are you sure?""Do it, Helena."Helena pressed the button. A voice came dripping false calm, with an absolute deep slow.A LONG TIME." Adrian Ashfeld"Say what you called to say, Corin."Straight to business, I heard you had friends over tonight. But you know you did, and your man wrote me a letter."A courtesy," Corin said. "I could've taken the girl too, instead of just warning you, but I didn't."That is a courtesy you call breaking into my house??? Adrian asked."I call it patience, what your father never had too much of. Corin's voice sharpened. One week, Adrian. That's more mercy than what your family ever showed mine.Mira's chest constricted at the term mercy. Adrian’s jaw was hard like a stone cracker.Corin: "You will get nothing from me. "NOT the girl, NOT the territory, and NOT one bloody inch of what
