ATHENA
The door to the chamber opened and Mira was brought in with Darrel trailing behind her. Her head was bowed, refusing to meet my eyes. Her hands trembled at her sides, fingers clenched so tightly that her nails dug into her skin. It wasn’t until she shifted closer that I noticed the thin line of blood trailing down her finger.
“Tell them the truth, Mira. Tell them what you told me earlier,” I voiced but was only met with silence till Enzo spoke up.
“Mira, daughter of Elijah Brooke, tell us all you know.”
“I…I… I overheard the mistress telling the guard on how she will poison the Luna,” Mira said with her head still bowed.
I looked at her speechless, unable to find my words. I have just been betrayed by the one person I thought would save me.
“Is that all?” Enzo asked.
“The child inside her isn’t for the Alpha,” Mira added. My legs suddenly became weak and I fell on my knees. I opened my mouth to defend myself but was betrayed by words. I heard the guests murmuring among themselves and flashing glares of hatred on me.
This was all Ginny’s doings.
Using the last strength left in me, I picked myself up and lounged on Ginny. I grabbed her hair and pulled it so hard till Enzo came to her rescue. He kicked me so hard that I fell on my knees.
Ginny herself blinked, completely caught unaware by my outburst. Then she let out a wail when she recovered.
I was back on the ground in a second kick in the stomach from Enzo. But this time he did not stop. He kept at it, making sure he aimed at the stomach I was covering with my arms. The baby I was protecting. My baby.
“Hold on a little longer. I will protect you,” I whispered to it.
Just then, I heard a little footstep run towards Enzo and kicked him with her little feet. It was my baby sister, Astra. She was trying to save me. Enzo wasted no time in flinging her away so harshly. I saw my father walk up to her and bundled her out of the court room. Enzo came at me again, this time harder.
My Mother screamed and tried to come to my rescue but was held by Beta Darrel. She struggled till she freed herself from his grip and then, everything shredded into darkness.
…
I woke with a gasp as I was hit by a cold water, the shock jolting me upright. My skin burned from the icy chill as I tried to figure out what was happening till I heard a cold familiar voice.
"I thought you were gone. You’ve been gone for hours," it was Enzo.
I looked up at him, unable to form a word. I felt drained, and I instinctively put a hand over my stomach.
"Don’t worry, I saved you the disgrace. It’s dead," Enzo informed without emotion. I felt my world shatter and my intestine knot. I failed. My child was gone. The one that I hoped on was forcefully snapped away from me. I opened my mouth to scream but no sound came. Only tears spilled down my cheeks.
"Since you have nothing to say, I’ll do the talking."
I gulped.
"You should be dead by now, but you are only alive for a reason. Your mother is in the dungeon and charged for treason for accusing my mate and I and for obstructing justice." He dropped the bombshell and my whole body shuddered.
“I know you want her alive, so I will give you a choice."
He placed a knife in front of me. "I take every last drop of your blood and she lives, but don’t worry, everyone will think you have been exiled. Or I hang you both by sunset tomorrow."
I looked at him incredulously, but he only looked stoically at me. "I will give you only ten seconds…."
"Take my blood and let my mother live," I blurted.
He grinned slowly. "So be it."
He signaled one of the guards who dragged in a bloodletting chair.
After they were done harvesting my blood, I was brought before the pack court. I was so weak that I could barely stand. The guards on either side held me up, their firm grips the only thing keeping me from passing out entirely. I looked up to see my mother chained in the corner of the hall. She was alone. I felt a little relief. Enzo kept to his words, but I had a horrible feeling that I was wrong.
The trial went on with me as the main convict. I was going in and out. Unable to keep my eyes open for too long. My thoughts strayed to my child that I had just lost. The only thing that matters to me and I had failed to protect. I might be a wolf but my healing process was too slow.
Soon it was time for the verdict to be passed, I tuned in to their voices. Enzo was speaking.
"Athena Blackwood, for your crimes against the pack and for infidelity to your Alpha, you are sentenced to a quest.
I blinked in surprise. Enzo never said anything about a quest.
"You will be deposited to the Void Obsidian pack territory."
My blood ran cold at the mention of the Obsidian pack. They were not only the mortal enemy of the Phoenix Pack, but every other pack. They were not werefolks like the rest of us. They were Lycans, the accursed. The ones that survived the curse. They didn’t just survive the curse, the turned them blood lust feral creatures. There were monsters with intelligence, but that only made them more horrible. They were being led by an Alpha no one dare speak his name. No one dares to wage a war against them.
"You must assassinate the Alpha of Obsidian pack and bring back his head, and with that bringing freedom to your mother and yourself." Gasps filled the hall.
This was worse than an exile. Worse than an execution. This was a death trap set by Ginny. The Alpha of Obsidian, a monster whose name most never be mentioned even by the greatest Alpha, not even Enzo himself.
Even if I was a trained assassin, I would fail. Many have attempted but not a single one returned. For how could one kill a man whose touch could burn a person from the inside? A touch that no person was immune to. This was no rumor because I had seen his handy work with my own two eyes.
Enzo hit the gavel three times, the sound echoing through the hall. Everyone stood as he walked out without a glance back. I couldn’t tear my gaze away from him. The guards grabbed my arms and dragged me toward the exit, my legs too weak to keep up. The last thing I heard was my mother's scream before darkness took over.
I regained consciousness on the cold hard ground of the dungeon. My body ached, every bruise and lash from the kicks and whips hurt. I forced myself to sit up, wincing as I moved. My heart dropped the moment I took in the environment. This wasn’t the dungeon.
Dead bodies hung around the fence, their skin twisted and charred as if burned from the inside. The air reeked of death. I wasn’t in the Phoenix pack anymore. I was in the Obsidian pack- a place just as deadly as the stories claimed.
I turned to escape, but footsteps approached from the side. My foot landed on a branch, and it cracked loudly.
"Did you hear that?" a voice asked, and they immediately ran to where I was. I clamped over my mouth and hid behind a big tree.
I held my breath as the guard came closer to where I hid. My body hurt even more with the action. I clenched my jaw, waiting and hoping. He looked around for a while, but he did not see me. When he began to move away, I let out a sigh of relief thinking I was safe. But then, grabbed me by my dress and lifted me off the ground. My feet dangled as I turned face-to-face with a guard so tall and heavily built. His cold glare sent shivers down my spine. Phoenix warriors can’t stand a chance against him.
Without warning, he threw me to the floor. A small knife I didn’t know I had fell from my body. The silence that followed was loud.
“Let’s take her to the Alpha.” One of the guards said.
At the mention of the Alpha, my stomach churned. I could not muster a word in protest. What would I say?
The guard who had apprehended me carried me effortlessly as if I were weightless, while the others followed closely behind. My head spun from being upside down, and the pain from my injuries intensified with every step.
Soon, we appeared to be a grand hall, adorned with dark tapestries and lit by flickering torches. The guard carrying me dumped me unceremoniously onto the cold stone floor, causing me to let out a cry of pain.
Before I could steady myself, a tall, imposing figure approached. He wore armor adorned with intricate designs, and his eyes were dark as the shadows. He dwarfed everyone else I had seen in my life. He was indeed the monster that the people spoke about. His hair was long, dark and unbound. The way it alighted the hardness of his features only made him even more daunting in appearance.
But what I thought was most odd and terrifying about the Alpha were his veins. They were highlighted on his arms to his elbows. It looked like death itself flowed through his veins which made his aura more severe.
"What have you brought to me?" he demanded, his voice deep and commanding.
"An assassin, Alpha. We found a weapon with her," one of the guards responded while another showed him the knife.
The Alpha's gaze narrowed as he studied me. "Is that so?" he mused, circling around me like a predator assessing its prey. "Who sent you, little wolf?" There was no amusement in his voice.
I struggled to sit up, wincing as I moved. Everything hurt. "I... I was sent by the Phoenix Alpha," I managed to say.
A murmur rippled through the guards at my words, and I could see the Alpha's interest piqued even further. His green eyes accessed me even further.
"So Enzo sent a woman to my territory, huh?" He replied, his tone tinged with both disbelief and curiosity. "A woman?" He let out a laughter.
I swallowed hard, trying to summon the courage to speak. "I... I had no choice… I…"
The Alpha's expression darkened, and a dangerous glint appeared in his eyes. "There is always a choice, little wolf?" he growled, his voice low and menacing.
I said nothing but gazed up at him watching his hand. I noticed that even his own men stood far away from him as though he were a plague.
I gulped. “I…I…” I began, but was immediately cut short.
"You should have heard by now, little wolf. No one comes in here and makes it out alive."
Then, at a speed I could not comprehend, he was right in front of me, his hand around my neck, forcing me to look up at his face. A menacing smile slashed across his lips.
"Send my regards to the fallen heroes just like you," his green eyes flashed gold.
My mind was spiraling. This was the end. He touched me. My body would burn spontaneously and that would be the end. I failed in my quest, failed my mother, and failed my child. I had failed myself. I had pursued Enzo's happiness instead of mine. I wished I had lived for myself.
ATHENAI squinted my eyes open to find the shocked faces staring back at me and then at the Cursed Lycan himself. My vision was still blurry because of the blood which have found its way to my eyes. His surprised expression has shifted to a confused one. His golden eyes had changed back to its normal green color.“That has never happened before,” he said coldly, staring at me with heavy scrutiny, enough to send shivers down my spine. “You are immune,” his voice came again, this time coldly.I gulped loudly as I watched him turn on his heel, took a few steps and turned to the guards.“Strip her!” He ordered loudly that I noticed the guards flinch.I held on to my torn cloth tightly. I didn’t want to be stripped by those men. The guards started approaching me to carry out their Alpha’s order. I bet I wasn’t the first woman they have ever stripped.Just then, the door to the court room pushed open and two women dressed magnificently walked in. The older woman was staring at me from a dis
ZEPHRYHaving the little wolf in my pack felt like a blessing from the moon goddess and also like a curse. I have been avoided by everyone, including my mother not because I was the Alpha but because of my curse. Everyone I touch burns from the inside. Although it made me more powerful than my folks, it also made me the loneliest Alpha that ever existed. The moment I laid my eyes on her, I heard my wolf scream MINE. To crown it all, she bares the Obsidian mark, which ran from the back of her neck, down to her spine. She was the only one that was immune to my touch. This has happened like never.I watched her eyes widen and heard her heart race while her lips curved out the word ‘Mate’. I would have the same expression if I was told that I was mated to a cursed and the deadliest Alpha Lycan that ever existed.“You wished to be spared, don’t you?” I asked slowly, and watch her nod almost immediately with tears flowing down her cheeks.“My mercy comes with a price. Are you willing to pay
ZEPHRYMy heart gave an unfamiliar jolt at the word, but I ignored it. “Speak.”“She fainted and Miss Velyana rushed her to the hospital.”Without another word, I stormed down the corridors. “Did she try to kill herself? Tch. She will pay for this.”The thought of her trying to take her own life sent a cold fury through me.I pushed open the infirmary doors hard, and they hit the walls. The room smelled like medicine and a little bit like blood. Veylana stood over Athena, who wasn't moving. Veylana's face was grim as she put a wet cloth on Athena's forehead. "Tell me what's wrong," I demanded.Veylana did not look up. "You are impatient as always," she muttered. But her voice was not as sharp as usual. When she finally turned to face me, her expression was close to sadness.“She’s weak, Zephyr. Dangerously so.”Athena looked tiny and weak, her dark eyelashes resting on her pale skin. Something inside me twisted.I stepped closer, looking down at her. She was breathing weakly, and her f
Alpha EnzoI rolled over as beams of light made their way through the curtains. I sighed deeply, I must have slept longer than I planned. This is what happens when you allow the vixen in your bed to draw you into a good time.I smirked as she sighed beside me. The recent events have been a rollercoaster, one hot on the heels of the other. At the very least, I finally got rid of that leech, Athena. How dare she lay a hand on my child? I get that she was carrying one as well but how dare she hurt me ?What would make the day better was the news of her demise. Like how dumb was she? What did she hope to achieve there? An obvious death sentence. But that wasn't the priority right now.All that she has given to me has to somehow be preserved. When I got to my office my beta came in, looking all nervous.“What? Did something happen?" I asked him as I got to my feet." Sir, I have some news that might come off as shocking,” my beta said to me," Spit it out already!” I yelled at him. The su
MIRAThe only thing I could hear in the deafening silence of the woods was my ragged breathing as I ran for my life. They did Athena dirty, and now they want to silence me forever. Well, they can only do so much.Aurora's cries haunted me after I listened to her cry out in pain after I told her what had been done to Athena.I swore to make things right. I didn't know how, but I was going to at least try to make things right for her.I shouldn't have lied to begin with, but not when my son was in their grip. I glanced at my toddler who was somehow fast asleep despite all the jostling happening right now.The night was still young when I was finally allowed to take him home. How he cried touched my heart and I decided that getting out of here was the best decision I was going to make for him. What was next? Who else was his life going to be held over my head to fuck over?He began to stir as though he knew I was thinking about him. I stopped to nurse him.Yes, he was close to one-year-o
MIRACrescenda sighed deeply before responding to my query."I said your mother was a great friend of ours. Pay attention, I don't like to repeat myself," she said, sounding annoyed.“My mother is dead. I never met her and nobody seemed to know anything about her, so I was relegated to the position of an omega in my pack. So forgive me for asking questions!" I said to her and she sighed again."I knew they should have sent somebody else for this," she muttered under her breath, and I stared at her in surprise. She didn't just say what I heard her say." Listen, I knew your mother. Too well, actually. And that is why I came to your rescue tonight. I saw the mess that you helped those fools create, and I am not pleased. Especially because of the person you are messing with. Do you know who Athena is?” Crescenda asked me and I furrowed my brows in confusion.I understand that she is not pleased. I'm also not pleased with myself." I don't think I understand what you are asking me. Athena
ZEPHRYThe door to my office was pushed open by my disheveled sister."Zephyr, it's Athena. We need you!" she said to me before rushing off again.I didn't ask any questions, just followed her immediately. In the infirmary, I found that my mate was hooked up to some machines, and they were beeping like crazy.“What is the situation?” I asked as I rolled up my sleeves. If they needed my blood, then they were going to have it.“I can't tell exactly. She has been unconscious since the day of the surgery. She suddenly went into an arrest," my sister said out loud as the healers rallied around her, hanging bags of infusions and giving her injections." Give me that, let me give you more blood,” I said to my sister, who handed me the special syringe that she gave me yesterday.Without hesitation, I plunged the needle into my arm and only stopped when it was full. I placed it on the table and backed away. My sister picked it up with a padded glove and stabbed the needle right into my mate's
VEYLANAThe pack elders were trying to be discreet in their mistreatment of my brother's mate, but they weren't doing such a good job at it. Telling Zephyr would be their death sentence, so I might as well handle it before things get out of hand.I walked into her room, which I had set up for her, to see a nurse writing things down without checking her vitals. I watched her in silence as she did a haphazard job, not even checking the dosage of the medication that she was pushing into Athena. When she turned and saw me, she gasped and dropped everything that she was holding.“There is only one way your head will remain attached to your shoulders in five minutes. Give me the list of everything that you just injected her with and their dosage. You will do well to tell me the person who authorized you to give the medication as well,” I said to the nurse, who began looking around like someone was going to come to her rescue.Well, I would love to see them try.I raised a brow as the shiver
ATHENAOf course, my prayers weren't answered.Alpha Zephyr stared at me for almost five minutes straight before the door opened and Veylana came in. She smiled at me before she walked into the bathroom and came out a few minutes later.“Can I begin her treatment, brother?" Veylana said to him. I noticed she was addressing him as her brother. Maybe this would help to keep the beast grounded.I wanted to hide under her skirts when his eyes cut to mine. Without a word, he walked away. I sighed deeply in relief before I burst out crying.Veylana came to sit next to me before she pulled me into a hug.“It's going to be alright. I know you were scared, our woods are full of things that make up for nightmares,” Veylana continued to comfort me until I cried myself to sleep. The next time I woke up, it was Veylana's furious whispers to someone."You must be insane to go after her in your beast form. Didn't you think that she would have been petrified to see you?” Veylana said to the person th
THANEIt was close to dawn when I learned that Zephyr got to her first.Dang it!My plans had been fouled because I found out a little too late. Well, I just have to plan better. My Zelda's sacrifice would never be for nothing. Her son was going to keep his throne, and no social-climbing wannabe assassin was going to ruin that for me, for us.I would like to reunite with Zelda with my head held high. At least I kept the throne in her bloodline.“Get me Jason, tell him everything, and he should only come to me when he has plans to fix this!" I instructed my informant. As soon as he left, I began to run things over in my mind. This girl was as silly as they came.If I were her, I would have kept my head down, done some research, and found the right time before hiking the way she did.She didn't even know her way around the pack, and I was certain that if Zephyr didn't find her or my men, the woods would have claimed her. That's it, Thane, you are bloody brilliant. It is quite simple. Th
THANEI stared at my glass of gin in deep anger and sorrow. Twenty years of marriage and forty years of being a part of this royal family, and I still wasn't being taken seriously by the Lycan Alpha. This wasn't about me, but about the pack and his reputation.Who rewards his assassin with marriage and a position as his Luna?I don't care if she was the only living soul that could touch him and not die, but this was too much. Our pack had a reputation to uphold.I smashed the glass into the wall in anger.Zelda would have talked some sense into him. I knew I could never replace her mate. She loved him with a fierceness that I admired. I had also lost my mate too early in our marriage. So we found peace with each other, companionship, and a quiet love that bore Veylana.I couldn't let everything that she fought for go to waste because Zephyr found someone who could survive his touch. To make matters worse, he has refused to allow the league of mages that we had as our allies to work on
ATHENAI sat quietly as realization sank in.I had just told Lycan Alpha Zephyr the majority of what had happened in my life. I had just opened up to a total stranger. This was bad, it was terrible.I immediately wiped my tears from my eyes before I looked up at Lycan Alpha Zephyr. What I saw had my blood running cold.In front of me sat Alpha Zephyr's beast. When did he shift? How come I didn't hear him? More importantly, what was he going to do to me now that I had revealed how pathetic I was and how useless I was going to be to him?No wolf, no womb, no strength. Straight up pathetic. The beast got to its feet, and fear had me rooted in my seat.He stalked towards me, and my heart nearly jumped out of my chest. The fear I felt increased terribly. I haven't feared for my life like this in a very long time.I needed to get out. I need to get out right now.As though his beast had heard my silent cry, he turned around and stalked away.My breath of relief was momentary because I was s
ATHENAMy heart sank as he said he wanted to talk to me.Was this it? He wanted to tell me privately that he was no longer interested in our arrangement.I nodded my head and folded my hands in front of me as I had always done while I was standing in front of Alpha Enzo.“Please sit down," he said to me, and I turned to see that all the chairs here were so inviting. Which one would I sit on without offending him?I finally settled into the nearest chair. It was comfy and seemed like the least one to offend him. My heart sank again when he pulled out a stool and sat down. Was that what I was meant to do?By the moon goddess! He's built. His slap could dislocate my jaw in one swing.Fear filled me as he watched me silently with his arms folded across his chest.“You need to relax, Athena. No one here is going to hurt you here,” his voice came. Though he sounded as cold as always, I was soothed by his words.I took a deep breath and nodded my head as I exhaled. Then silence ensued."I wa
ATHENANow that my body didn't hurt as much, I decided to take Veylana's advice to take a walk from time to time. The evening breeze was calming, and I felt the pack members would probably be rounding up and preparing to go home. But I was sadly mistaken. They seemed to just be beginning their days as I stepped out of the house that I had been occupying. This was the first time I was outside the building, so I was surprised to see that it was a hospital building. The rooms were too furnished to be hospital rooms. I mean, which hospital room comes with a fully stocked kitchen?I shook it off and decided to start my walk.I didn't plan to go too far, as I didn't know the area of the pack that I was in. The streets were bustling with pack members who either ignored me or openly stared at me. Some were pointing fingers at me and talking.I swallowed the lump in my throat as I promised myself to ignore them.A noise from my right caught my attention and I turned to see a little girl who wa
ASTRAI bowed in greeting, but I kept a straight face. Lawrence was one of the men I truly admired in this pack.He sees people, not just soldiers.“What happened to your face?" He asked me with a straight face.“Your Luna happened," I said to him, and I saw the corner of his lips tilt in amusement.“Making such allegations could land you in real trouble, young lady," he told me, and I rolled my eyes.“You can ask her, she's over there. I would love to see her deny it. Maybe you can ask her father as well. He is, after all, her muscle," I said to, and he sighed."Meet me at the training fields after dinner,” Lawrence said to me, and walked away when he saw that a crowd was interested in our conversation.I took my meal and found a table where I wanted to sit alone and eat in peace, wasting food was also not an option. Athena would slap me from the obsidian pack if I did that.Someone sat in the seat across mine, and I sighed deeply. These kids don't just learn, do they? It was my faul
ASTRAI clutched my face as I took the fifth blow in a row from the man I was supposed to call father. Ginny sat in a corner looking bored, and my father, Azul, seemed hell-bent on entertaining his golden child.More like his bastard.“If I hear that you went to that filthy prison again, I'll -" he began to yell at me, but I cut him off."What will you do? Lock me up like you locked up my mother? Or will you help your golden child and send me to my death like you did with Athena? Or maybe get creative this time around with my bones?!” I yelled at him, and he gave me another blow. This time dislocated my jaw. I held the throbbing jaw and glared at him as tears filled my eyes."Yes! I will do so much worse to you, you worthless piece of shit! Did your mother fill your head with some bullshit about your birth? I never wanted another cursed child from her! I told her to get rid of you the first chance that she got, because I had everything I ever wanted in a daughter in Ginny. But no, she
VEYLANA“Listen, darling, there isn't any living soul that is going to successfully snatch you out of my hand. Have you heard of the term mates?" I asked my mate, who stared at me in confusion.“You can't be my mate, my mistress is my mate. She even marked me," my mate said to me, and turned his neck to show me clear skin.I cocked my head to the side. How badly did she fuck with his head for him to imagine a mate bond on his head.“I don't see a mate bond on any part of your body, love," I said to him, and he sighed deeply before attempting to shift. He screamed out in pain and fell to his knees.I rushed forward, completely ignoring Athena, who looked frightened by his scream of pain.I watched in horror as he writhed in pain, and then a mark was etched on his neck. It was a disgusting design that I recognized all too well. She branded him and somehow convinced him that it was a mating mark. She essentially hexed him. With trembling hands, I gently reached for him as his breathing w
