FLORA

Suddenly, it was just as though everything happened all at the same time. One moment I was lunging toward my mother, and the next we were both tumbling to the ground as the sound of the gunshot filled the air. I covered her body with mine while my heart hammered so hard that I thought it might burst from my chest.

"Mom! Are you okay?" I shouted over the sudden chaos.

She nodded, even though her eyes were wide with shock. "I'm fine!" she replied.

A grunt of pain coming from someone suddenly made me look up. Salvatore had fallen back against one of the filing cabinets, and he was holding his shoulder. Blood seeped between his fingers, staining his shirt a dark red color.

"Salvatore's been hit!" I yelled.

Dante and Sofia had already taken cover, and they had their guns out now. Now they were returning fire through the broken window. The sound was really loud in the confined space of the storage unit.

"Stay down!" Dante ordered as he got off three more shots.

FLORAThe words immediately hit me like a physical blow. My mother had received a kidney transplant a few months ago after her original kidneys failed, all courtesy of Dante. And now it had failed?"How bad is it?" I managed to ask despite the way my heart was currently pounding heavily against my chest."Without another transplant soon, her chances of survival are not looking good. She has a month left, maybe two or three at most," he replied.I leaned against the wall. I was suddenly feeling like I wanted to collapse. "Does she know?" I asked. My voice was already shaking badly."Yes. She has known for a while, I think. The medical facility she was at has been monitoring her condition,” Dr. Chen replied."But she left to finish what Carlo started," I whispered as the pieces suddenly began to click into place in my mind. "She's dying, and she wanted to make sure Antonio was stopped before..." But I couldn't complete the sentence. Dr. Chen placed a gentle, reassuring hand on my arm.

FLORA Time was running out. The evidence was secure, Salvatore was recovering, and my mother was resting at the private clinic under Dr. Chen's watchful eye. But the clock was ticking, both for stopping Antonio and for saving my mother's life. We gathered at Dante's penthouse for one final time to strategize. The large dining table was covered with maps of the island, including security details, layouts of the buildings, and other important information. "We can’t work with our original plan anymore," Dante said, addressing the room. “We have to tweak it a bit.” Everyone was there: Sofia, Lorenzo— whose arm was in a sling but otherwise he had recovered, Anthony, Harrison, and me. "Antonio knows we have the evidence,” Dante continued. “He'll be expecting us to make a move." "So we give him what he expects," Lorenzo said. He winced as he shifted in his chair. "But not in the way he anticipates." Dante nodded as he pointed to the map. "Lorenzo will bring me to the island as

FLORALorenzo quickly moved to the side as the guard fired, dodging the bullet expertly.Sofia immediately cut the engine because she didn’t want the little noise it was making to attract any of the guards to us. Now we were just drifting silently. "Something’s gone wrong. They knew Lorenzo had eventually decided to work with Dante."Through the binoculars, I watched the chaotic scene unfold. Lorenzo had taken cover behind some crates and was returning fire. Dante had somehow freed his hands and had gotten a weapon, probably from one of the guards he had taken down."We need to help them," I said urgently. I was already panicking slightly."No," Sofia replied firmly. "If we blow our cover too, the whole plan will fall apart. So we have to stick to the mission. We’ll make sure we get to the security office, disable the system, and get the evidence of Antonio's conspiracy with the other mafia dons so that we can present it together with Carlo’s evidence to Harrison."I knew she was rig

DANTEThe cold metal of the handcuffs bit into my wrists as Lorenzo shoved me forward. His grip on my arm was tight enough to leave bruises. I stumbled, partly for show and partly because the blow to my head from earlier was still making the world tilt sideways."Move it," Lorenzo growled, loud enough for everyone to hear.We entered what looked like a grand dining room which had been converted into a meeting hall. Five large chairs were positioned at the head of a long table, and four of them were occupied by men I recognized as the heads of the other crime families. The fifth chair, the center one, was where my father sat.Antonio Romano looked exactly like the last time I had seen him: broad shoulders, silver-streaked black hair, and eyes that could freeze hell itself. His eyes met mine, and I felt that familiar chill crawl up my spine, the one I had spent lots of years trying to forget."My son returns," Antonio said, his voice echoing across the whole room. "Though not quite as

"Flo, table six needs more coffee." I grabbed the half-empty pot and hurried across the diner floor, dodging a toddler who'd escaped his mother's grasp. My feet ached in the cheap sneakers that had seen better days. "Coming right up," I called, plastering my customer service smile on my face immediately. The man at table six barely looked up from his phone as I refilled his cup. No "thank you," not even a nod. Just another invisible service worker in his world. But I was used to it. "Anything else I can get you?" I asked. He shook his head without looking up. "Flora!" Marge, my manager, beckoned from behind the counter. "Your shift ended ten minutes ago. Don't you have somewhere else to be?" I glanced at the clock above the kitchen door. Crap, I thought. If I didn't hurry, I'd definitely be late for my night job. "Thanks, Marge." I untied my apron and stuffed it under the counter. "See you tomorrow." "Get some rest, honey," she called after me. "You look dead on your feet."

FLORA The office door closed behind me with a soft click that sounded like a death sentence. I stood frozen, staring at the massive desk that dominated the room. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcased the glittering city skyline, but all I could see was the reflection of a terrified woman: me. "Sit," ordered the towering bulk of a man who had dragged me in. I managed to lower myself into a leather chair without collapsing. My mind raced through escape scenarios, but each one more seemed more impossible than the last. The office had only one door, and Mountain Man stood in front of it like a boulder. "He'll be in soon," he said, crossing his arms. "Don't try anything stupid." Stupid would be sitting here waiting to be murdered. I nodded meekly, trying to look defeated while my eyes darted around the room. There had to be something, anything I could use. "I need to use the bathroom," I said. My voice was barely above a whisper. Mountain Man frowned. "Hold it." "Please," I begged, cro

FLORA The drive to Dante's home felt like a dream, or more accurately, a nightmare. I sat rigid in the back of a luxury SUV with tinted windows so dark they were practically black. Rex drove while Dante sat beside me, close enough that I could smell his cologne but not touching me. The silence stretched between us like a rubber band that had been pulled too tight. "Call your mother," Dante said finally, handing me a sleek phone I didn't recognize. "Tell her you won't be home tonight." I took it with trembling fingers. "What exactly am I supposed to say?" "That you've been offered a live-in position with better pay. Nothing about what you saw." His eyes locked with mine. "Nothing about me." I dialed Mom's number, each ring worsening my anxiety. What if she didn't answer? What if this was the last time I ever spoke to her? "Flora?" Mom's voice was thick with sleep. "Is everything okay? It's after midnight." "Hey, Mom." I fought to keep my voice steady. "Sorry to wake you. I... I h

FLORA "This is a business arrangement," he corrected. "One that benefits both parties. You get financial security and medical care for your mother. I get loyalty and discretion." "And if I refuse?" His expression hardened. "Then you become a liability rather than an asset." We both knew what that meant. I flipped to the last page, where a signature line awaited. "You're asking me to sign away my freedom." "I'm offering you a way out of poverty and your mother a way out of pain." He reached into another drawer and pulled out a syringe and a small vial. "Speaking of which..." My breath caught. "What is that?" "Your mother's new medication. A recent development from Europe. It hasn't been approved by FDA yet, but it is highly effective for stage three kidney disease. It halts progression and can even reverse some damage." I stared at the vial, while hope and suspicion took turns flaring up within me. "How do I know that's real?" "You don't." He set the vial down beside the contr

FLORAI picked up my mother’s phone from the desk. It was quite an old model but it still worked so she hadn’t even bothered to change it. That explained the signal that had been pinging. My mother had left her phone here.I started frantically searching through the boxes. "We need to find her. There must be something here that tells us where she would go next,” I said. I was already panicking now. The three of us searched through the unit thoroughly, pulling out files and photographs. I found pictures of Carlo with Dante's father, both of them looking much younger. There were surveillance photos of Antonio meeting with known criminals, documents detailing money laundering operations, hidden accounts in Swiss banks, and a lot of bad things."This is it," Dante said softly. He was holding up a thick folder. "This is everything we need to destroy Antonio.""But where is my mother?" I insisted. My desperation was increasing by the minute. As if in answer, I heard a soft noise outside th

FLORAI hadn't slept at all. My eyes were burning badly and my head pounded heavily as I paced in front of Dante's office. The note from my mother kept playing in my mind on a loop: "I'm finishing what Carlo and I started. Don't follow."What had my mother and Carlo started? And with whom? Her fragile state made this even more terrifying to me. She wasn't well enough to be out there on her own, especially not if it had anything to do with Antonio."We've checked every hospital, and every hotel too," Sofia said, hanging up her phone with a frustrated sigh. "Still we’ve found nothing.""She has to be somewhere!" I snapped, immediately, but I regretted my tone. "I'm sorry. I'm just worried.""We all are," Sofia assured me, squeezing my shoulder comfortingly.Dante walked in just then. His face didn’t reveal any expression whatsoever to me, but I liked to think he looked really determined right at that moment. Despite his injuries from Antonio's torture, he had been quite active as he mad

FLORALater that night, I found Dante standing on the balcony of his bedroom, staring out at the city lights. His shoulders were tense, and his posture looked quite rigid. I walked up behind him and wrapped my arms around his waist, resting my cheek against his back."You should be sleeping," I said softly."So should you.""I've got a better idea than sleeping," I replied, trying to lighten his mood.He turned in my arms, looking down at me with eyes that held too many emotions to name. Then he cupped my face in his hands. His touch was surprisingly gentle for a man who carried so much rage in him."I'm afraid," he said quietly. The admission stunned me. Dante never admitted fear. Dante was never afraid."Of what?" I questioned."Of becoming him. My father, Antonio. He’s ruthless, and willing to do anything for power." His thumb stroked my cheek. "What if that's in my blood too? What if this quest for revenge turns me into exactly what I've always hated?"I reached up, placing my han

FLORAThe next morning, Dante was already up and moving when I woke up. The bruises on his face had darkened overnight, painting his skin in shades of purple and blue, but he moved with purpose, ignoring the pain."You should still be in bed," I said, watching him pull on a clean shirt, wincing slightly as the fabric brushed over his injuries."There’s no time for that now,” he replied simply. Then he glanced at l me before he continued. "Antonio's meeting is tomorrow night. We need to be ready."Sofia and Harrison came, bringing in coffee and pastries that nobody touched. We gathered around a table in Dante's private office. We had all returned to the penthouse the night before after the doctors had pronounced Dante fit to go home."What do we know about this meeting?" Sofia asked. She kept tapping her fingers nervously on the table.Lorenzo had been discharged against medical advice. It was the typical stubbornness that apparently ran in their blood. Now he was sitting in one of the
