KAEL'S POV

(LYCAN'S REALM)

I've been relentlessly searching. Every waking moment, every dream, she's there, an ache in my chest that refuses to dull.

Elara.

My Elara.

The guilt felt like a physical weight, crushing me under its suffocating burden. What had I done? Gods, I will love her, despite everything, despite the fact I committed a monstrous, gut-wrenching act against her.

Those years with her...they were the brightest. The only ones that truly felt alive and vibrant. But my pathetic weak attempt to protect her, only drove her away, thereby causing me to make the most soul-crushing mistake of my existence.

I was scared, naive and stupid. So scared to be a man, so scared to be independent.

Darius. That rotten, power-hungry bastard Alpha of the Rogues. He was getting too close, sniffing around every border in the wolf realm, especially ours, dangerously getting close to discovering the truth about Elara. Elara, the last true blood healer.

The thought sent a wave of panic through

KAEL'S POV"You stupid bastard, what were you thinking?"Ronan looked up at me from the medical table. Blood covered his shirt. Deep gashes across his chest. His left arm hung at a wrong angle."Nice to see you too," he said through gritted teeth.I wanted to punch him. Would have if he wasn't already half dead."You went out alone. After we agreed no solo patrols.""I had a lead on the rogues.""Bullshit. You had a death wish."Doc Martinez worked on Ronan's wounds. Stitching. Cleaning. Trying to put him back together. The old human had seen too much werewolf blood lately."Easy Kael," Doc said. "Let me work."But I couldn't be easy. Not when Ronan pulled stupid stunts like this."Tell me what happened. All of it."Ronan winced as Doc cleaned a deep cut. "Got word about rogue movement near the south border. Went to check it out.""Alone.""Alone.""Even though we said never alone.""I didn't think they'd be ready for me."I laughed but it wasn't funny. "Ready for you? You're not Supe

RONAN'S POV "Something's really wrong here."I stopped walking completely. Lifted my nose up high to smell the air around me.The whole forest was way too quiet. No birds singing anywhere. No small animals running around in the bushes. Even the wind had totally stopped blowing. That definitely wasn't normal at all.I was doing my regular patrol route. The same path I'd walked probably a hundred times before. But today felt completely different. Really dangerous. My wolf was getting restless inside me. Pacing around like some kind of caged animal that wanted out.I pulled out my phone to check for messages. No signal at all. That happened sometimes when you got this deep in the woods. But it still made me nervous.A branch cracked somewhere behind me.I spun around real fast. Nothing there that I could see. Just lots of trees and dark shadows."Hello?" I called out as loud as I could. No answer came back to me.But I definitely knew someone was watching me. Could feel their eyes on my

Elara's POV"What's happening to me?"I stared at my arms in the bathroom mirror. The marks were spreading faster now. Getting bigger every hour. They looked exactly like the ones on Luna, the child we found last week. These glowing blue lines under my skin. They moved around like they were alive or something."Elara?" Kael knocked on the bathroom door. "You okay in there? You've been in there a while.""Yeah. Just getting dressed."I wasn't okay though. Not even close. But I couldn't tell him that. Not yet anyway. The marks started really small. Just a few thin lines on my wrist. I thought maybe they were just scratches at first. Now they covered half my arm. And they kept getting brighter every day.I pulled on a long-sleeved shirt. Made sure to pull it all the way down to cover everything. Maybe if I just ignored them, they'd go away on their own.But deep down inside I knew that wasn't gonna happen."Ready for breakfast?" Kael asked when I finally came out of the bathroom."Sure a

KAEL'S POV We walked deeper into Shadowfang territory. Everything felt wrong.Ronan walked next to me. His nose kept moving. He smelled what I smelled. Fear. Blood. Something else. Something that made my wolf want to run away."This is bad," Ronan said. He said it three times already."You said that.""Because it is still bad."I stopped. I looked at him. "You want to go back? Tell Elara we quit because we got scared?"Ronan's jaw got tight. "No.""Then be quiet and keep walking."We followed the scent trail for two hours. It led us into the heart of Shadowfang land. The trees were big here. Old. They blocked the sun. Everything felt cold and dead. The trail got stronger. More wolves came through here. Many more."Kael." Ronan grabbed my arm. "Listen."I stopped. I listened hard. There. Voices far away. Too far to hear words. But voices. Many wolves talking. We moved closer. We stayed low. We hid behind thick trees. The voices got clearer."We cannot wait much longer," someone said.

I'm standing in a place I don't know. The ground under my feet is cold and wet. The moon above me is wrong. It's red like blood and too big. Way too big. It takes up half the sky.Trees all around me but they ain't normal trees. They're twisted and bent like they're in pain. Their branches reach down like they wanna grab me.I try to move but my feet won't work right. Like I'm walking through mud that goes up to my knees."Where am I?" I say out loud.My voice sounds weird here. Like it's coming from far away. That's when I hear it. Breathing. Real deep and slow. Coming from everywhere and nowhere."You know where you are," a voice says.I spin around but don't see nobody. Just more twisted trees."Who's there?""You know who I am."The voice comes from the trees. Like the trees themselves are talking."I don't know nothing.""You know everything. You just don't want to see it."The breathing gets louder. Closer."What do you want?""To show you the truth."One of the trees moves. Be
