The alarm rang at exactly 5:30 a.m.

Ammie reached out from beneath her thin blanket and turned it off before it could wake the rest of the house. For a moment, she lay still, staring at the plain white ceiling above her—cracked slightly at the edges, but clean.

Everything about their home was simple. Careful. Managed.

Nothing was ever wasted.

She sat up slowly, brushing a strand of hair away from her face. The room she shared with her younger sister was small, but neatly arranged—two narrow beds, a wooden shelf filled with old textbooks, and a tiny wardrobe that had seen better days.

Yet somehow, it never felt suffocating.

It felt… safe.

Ammie slipped out of bed and adjusted her neatly ironed blouse hanging by the wall. She had pressed it the night before, making sure every crease was perfect. Appearances mattered—especially when you had so little else to offer the world.

In the kitchen, the soft sound of a kettle beginning to boil filled the air.

“You’re up already?” her mother’s voice came gently.

Ammie smiled as she stepped in. “I have an early class today.”

Her mother turned, handing her a cup of tea. “You always do.”

There was a quiet elegance in the way her mother carried herself—despite the faded dress, despite the tiredness hidden beneath her eyes. It was something Ammie admired deeply.

“How did you sleep?” her mother asked.

“Like a queen,” Ammie replied lightly.

Her mother chuckled. “In this palace?”

Ammie glanced around the small kitchen—the chipped tiles, the narrow counter, the single flickering bulb—and smiled.

“Yes,” she said simply. “In this palace.”

And she meant it.

Because love lived here.

They ate breakfast together—toast and tea, nothing extravagant. Her younger sister joined them halfway through, still half asleep, mumbling complaints that made both Ammie and her mother laugh.

For a few minutes, the world outside didn’t exist.

No pressure.

No expectations.

No harsh realities waiting beyond their door.

Just warmth.

Just home.

But as Ammie rinsed her cup and reached for her bag, reality slowly returned.

Her eyes fell briefly on the envelope sitting on the counter.

Unopened.

Unavoidable.

She had seen her mother staring at it the night before, her expression unreadable.

“What’s that?” Ammie asked casually, though something in her chest had already tightened.

Her mother hesitated.

“It’s nothing,” she said quickly.

Ammie didn’t move. “Mum.”

A pause.

Then her mother sighed softly, picking up the envelope and holding it in her hands as though it weighed more than it should.

“It’s from the landlord.”

The words landed quietly—but heavily.

Ammie swallowed.

“Oh.”

“We’re behind on rent,” her mother continued, her voice calm but strained. “He’s given us a deadline.”

The room suddenly felt smaller.

Not suffocating… but fragile.

Ammie nodded slowly, forcing herself to stay composed.

“Okay,” she said.

But her mind was already racing.

Deadlines meant pressure.

Pressure meant decisions.

And decisions… changed things.

She picked up her bag, slinging it over her shoulder.

“I’ll figure something out,” she said.

Her mother looked at her, concern flickering across her face. “Ammie—”

“It’s fine,” she insisted gently, offering a reassuring smile. “It always is.”

But as she stepped outside into the quiet, early morning streets of the city, her smile faded just slightly.

Tall buildings stood in the distance, glass catching the first light of day. Cars moved. People hurried.

Somewhere out there, opportunities existed.

Wealth. Power. Influence.

A completely different world from hers.

Amara looked ahead, her grip tightening on her bag.

One day, she thought.

I won’t just look at that world…

I’ll be part of it.

And she had no idea—

That the world she was staring at…

Was already on its way to find her.
