“You stupid girl! How dare you break off your engagement? After all the money your father and I have spent?!” Her mother screamed in her face.

Dakota gritted her teeth in frustration.

“Did you care to ask why I broke it off? Why don’t you ask your precious daughter what she’s been doing with Ryan behind my back!” She shot back.

Diana shifted nervously. “She’s making things up, mom. I don’t know what she’s talking about.”

Mother scoffed. “We took you out of the gutter and gave you everything you wanted and this is how you repay us? By embarrassing our family?”

She should have seen this coming. Did she expect this woman to take her side over Diana?

“And why were you with Elias? Is that where you’re coming from?” Her mother demanded to know.

“She spent the night with him. I saw them go up to his hotel room!” Her sister cried out.

“You cheap slut! You break things off with your fiancé only to jump into bed with the man your sister is seeing. What are you up to?" Her mother shot daggers at her.

Dakota looked on with a bored expression. She had nothing to say to them. It was only a matter of time before she moved out of this house.

“Carter!” Her mother called out her personal assistant.

He appeared almost immediately. “Yes, Mrs Stone?”

“Lock her in her bedroom until I decide to let her out.” Her mother ordered coldly.

Dakota was enraged. Carter grabbed her hand tightly before she could even think of running.

“No! Let me go! You can’t do this to me!” She fought him wildly with all her strength as Diana smiled triumphantly.

He remained unflinching as he dragged her farther away from her freedom.

Elias looked at his phone again to check for any new notification.

His blank screen stared back at him as he frowned, wondering why her phone was switched off.

He looked at his brother-in-law who was driving him. “What does it mean when a woman’s phone is unreachable, after seeing her the previous night?” He questioned.

His brother-in-law, Aaron, scratched his head. “You can’t know for sure. Anything might have happened for her phone to be switched off.”

“Anything like what?” He asked, interested.

“Her phone probably died or she switched it off on purpose because she’s just not interested.” He said with a shrug.

Elias didn’t know what to think. She had followed him to his hotel room, nervous and shaky, not knowing what he had planned. Could that have scared her off?

“Wait, are you seeing someone?” Aaron smirked.

“Just drive.” He instructed, grumpily. Aaron laughed, but didn’t press further. His phone started to go off. It was his mother.

He sighed in exhaustion. She wouldn’t stop calling after Diana had paid him an unsolicited visit to his office. If he was going to talk to her, it would be in person. He loved her but she was a lot to handle, most times.

She wouldn’t stop meddling in his love life. Maybe now that he was getting married, she would finally let him be.

***

Dakota paced around her room. trapped and angry. She couldn’t stay here anymore. There was no way she could call Elias to get her out as her mother had ordered Carter to seize her phone.

A thought formed in her head.

She raced to her wardrobe, packed up a bunch of clothes and threw them on the bed. She began to tie the ends of her clothes together to form a very long rope. She had to find a way to reach Elias before it was too late. Thankfully, she had quickly scribbled his number on her palm before her phone was taken away.

She opened her bedroom window hoping to find someone that would help her out. It was a slim chance but she would be damned if she didn’t try. She scanned the streets for someone, preferably school kids that were willing to do anything to make some money.

A young girl in a school uniform skipped by, holding a cone of ice cream.

“Hey, kid!” She called out, gesturing wildly with both hands. The young girl stopped to look around her, wondering where the voice was coming from.

“Up here!” Dakota called again. She finally looked up.

“Do you have a phone there? Let me have it for five minutes and I’ll give you $10.” She offered.

The young girl folded her hands together. “Make it $20.”

Sneaky little thing, Dakota thought. She was desperate so she didn’t have a choice.

“Fine.” She answered.

As she dropped her clothes that had now formed a long rope out the window, she added, “Put it in the pocket.”

The young girl placed her phone in the pocket of her jeans and sent a thumbs up. Slowly, she brought the phone up.

She quickly dialed his number. He answered on the second ring. “Elias. It’s me, Dakota.” She whispered.

“This isn’t your phone. What happened? Are you okay?” He sounded worried.

“No, my phone got seized by my mother. She locked me in my room. I need you to come get me out of here.”

“On my way.” He ended the call.

She stuffed the phone and a $20 bill in the jeans pocket and sent it back down.

“Thanks, kid!” She smiled. The young girl grabbed her phone and the money and ran off happily.

She grabbed a suitcase from her wardrobe and quickly began to stuff her clothes into it. It didn’t take long before her bedroom door burst open to reveal her mother. Elias stood behind her, a murderous look on his face.

“You came.” She sighed in relief, genuinely happy to see him.

“Pack your bags. Let’s go.” He extended his hand to her.

“What’s the meaning of this, Elias? What is going on between the both of you?” Her mother demanded.

Without hesitation, she grabbed her suitcase and slipped her hand in his. They walked out of her room, hand in hand. Her father was seated in the living room, obviously waiting for someone to explain to him what was happening.

“Dakota, what is this about you calling off your wedding with Ryan?” He thundered. He was usually a quiet and reserved man so it was shocking to see him so expressive.

“Dad…I—” She started to explain. Elias squeezed her hand to stop her.

Her father turned to Elias, clearly wanting an explanation. “Elias, I didn’t expect to see you here. Are you here to see my daughter?"

He stepped forward. “I apologize for the intrusion, Mr Stone.”

“This might seem sudden, but I would like to ask for your permission to marry your daughter.”

“I think I’m pregnant.” Diana revealed. Her mother gasped in surprise. “You’re pregnant? When did you find out?” She had an elated look on her face that Diana couldn’t reciprocate with how queasy she felt.“A few minutes ago. I took a test and it came out positive.” She answered. “Oh, this is just perfect! A little Persson baby!” Her mother exclaimed excitedly as she got up from the bed.Diana swallowed. “Mom, it’s not—” She attempted to tell her mother the real father of her baby but immediately decided against it. Maybe it was better if no one knew the truth.Besides, she doubted her mother would listen to anything she said, after what she just heard. “Were you saying something, darling?” Her mother asked.“I was just saying that the test could be wrong though. It’s not uncommon to get a false positive.” Diana swiftly said. Her mother waved her off. “That hardly ever happens,” Diana could see the wheels turning in her head. “Besides, this is your chance to drive them apart and get

Dakota was too stunned to speak. She had suspected that Elias was a very straightforward person but she had not been expecting this much honesty. “What did you just say?” She choked. He leaned back, amused. “I can’t help that I find you insanely attractive, Miss Stone.” She didn’t know how to respond. Her heart was beating wildly in her chest and to her dismay, she suddenly felt self conscious.“You shouldn’t say things like that. It might complicate this whole…arrangement.” She managed to say.She couldn’t let herself be swayed by his words. He probably had a string of ladies at his beck and call. Ladies that fit right into his caliber of women. She should just be grateful he had accepted her proposal that easily.“You’re going to be my wife, Miss Stone. You should start getting used to hearing those words.” He said with all seriousness. She had to agree that he had a point. “You’re right, but we don’t have to keep up appearances when we’re alone.” “I didn’t say that to keep up ap

“You want to marry Diana? Why, that’s great news!” Mr Stone exclaimed with a loud laugh.“It’s not Diana, sir. I intend to marry Dakota.” Elias corrected, meeting Mr Stone’s gaze. Her father did a double take. “But how is that possible? I thought you and Diana were seeing each other?”“We were initially, and then Dakota caught my attention. I couldn’t resist getting close to her.” He explained as he held Dakota’s hand affectionately. Dakota stared at Elias, astonished. One would think he was actually in love with how convincing he sounded. Her mother looked on, not even the least bit convinced. “And you really expect us to believe that? How long have you two even known each other? Does your family know about her?” “Helen! That’s enough!” Her father chided. Her mother flinched at his tone.To Elias and Dakota, he said, “You are adults and I want to believe you both know what you’re doing. If this is what you want, then I give you permission to get married.” “Is that all you’re goin

Diana gasped. “Is that…That’s not what I think it is, right?” She turned to her sister with wide eyes. Dakota smirked, enjoying the look of horror on her sister’s face. She stood up to meet Diana, a smug smile on her face. “Excuse us, will you?” As Elias stood up, he took her hand in his as they walked towards his hotel room, leaving Diana with her mouth agape.***Her hands couldn’t stop shaking as she struggled to open the hotel room with the key card. “W-what?!” He spluttered. As she made for the door, he ran after her. “Dakota, wait!"She walked on ahead, ignoring him. “Hold on, D. What do you mean you're breaking off the engagement? You-you can’t do this. The wedding is in two weeks. Whatever it is, we can work it out.” He begged profusely.Dakota laughed derisively. “It’s over, Ryan. We’re done.”To her surprise, he went down on both knees. “Please don’t do this, D. Whatever it is, we can fix it. I know you still love me!” She stopped in her tracks, infuriated by his certainty. “I don’t think I ever loved you, Ryan. I pitied you in the same way you pitied me all this time!” She felt nothing but a searing, relentless fury. He repulsed her in a way she hadn’t thought possible. He clasped his hands together. “Please, babe. What are our families going to say when they find out?”“Hmm, let me think about that. Yeah, I wonder what they’re going to say when they find out you’re in love with my sister and you’ve been cheating on me wi

Elias was not the type to be impressed easily, as a lot of things didn’t pique his interest. Until today. He couldn’t deny that he was very interested in the young woman standing before him, clad in his large jacket. Everything about her was interesting to look at. With the way she tilted her head at him expectantly to how small she looked in his jacket. “Elias?” She repeated, calling him by his name. He liked how his name sounded on her lips.“What kind of proposition would that be?” He couldn't help asking. She glanced around like she wanted to reveal a secret. “We can’t talk here. Let’s meet up in a quiet place. Say, tomorrow?” She suggested. He wondered what was going on in her head. She had looked so pale and shaken up earlier. Right now, there was a hardness about her that he didn’t quite understand. He wasn’t sure he liked it.“Why don’t we meet up at a restaurant? I’ll text you the time of the reservation. My driver will come pick you up tomorrow.” He added.Dakota shifted un

Dakota stumbled backwards as her legs suddenly felt like jelly. She had to be hearing things.“Why are you so bothered anyway? It’s not like you’re in love with her.” Her sister sneered. Her heart began to beat wildly in her chest. “I may not be in love with her but that was a bit too much. It’s almost like you want her to find out about us.” Ryan pointed out.She couldn’t believe what was happening. This had to be some kind of cruel joke.“Maybe I want her to find out, but she’s so naive and gullible, it makes me want to gouge my eyes out! She can’t even see what’s right in front of her.” Her sister revealed contemptuously.Ryan let out a frustrated sigh. “Because she trusts me.”“And look where that got her.” Diana snickered. The walls seemed to be closing in on her. She suddenly felt like she couldn’t breathe. She willed her feet to move, but they remained glued to the ground. It felt like a sharp knife was being dug repeatedly into her chest with the amount of pain she was feelin

  • Bound by Deception    Chapter Three

Dakota parked her car at the parking lot and walked towards the clothing store. Today was the launch day of the spring set collection she had designed. Mother and Diana were already at the store, attending to new and existing shoppers. She stood in the parking lot, checking her phone for any missed call or message from Ryan, her fiancé. She had been calling him all day but it kept going straight to voicemail, so she sent him a text message to know what was going on.As she got into the store, she took in the scene before her. The fact that people looked so eager to invest an insane amount of money on clothes she had designed made her smile with pride. At the corner of her eye, she spotted Diana talking to some customers, animatedly. A young man who looked familiar was making a video of her, just like the other shoppers. They seemed so taken by Diana and what she was saying that they didn’t even notice her.As Dakota advanced forward, she suddenly stopped in her tracks. It was Ryan.
