Chapter 33: Aneira

The following morning brought another knock.

It came just as I was grinding fresh willow bark into the morning’s medicine, three measured raps against the door that carried through the cottage with all the persistence I had come to dread.

I closed my eyes.

Not again.

The pestle rested quietly against the rim of the mortar while I listened.

Another knock followed.

Then a woman’s voice, softened by the thick wood between us.

“Healer? Are you within?”

My gaze drifted automatical

Chapter 35: KaleThe latch clicked. The sound was soft, almost swallowed by the crackling fire, but every instinct inside me snapped toward it before the door had opened completely. She stepped inside carrying an armful of split cedar balanced against one hip, a thin veil of snow clinging to the shoulders of her cloak. Cold air followed her into the cottage, curling briefly around her skirts before the warmth of the hearth claimed it. She nudged the door shut with her foot, set the wood neatly beside the fire, and pushed back her hood with an absent movement that sent several dark strands escaping the braid hanging over one shoulder. She hadn’t noticed I was awake. Not yet.Without looking in my direction, she crossed to the worktable and immediately set herself to work.Everything she did possessed the same quiet certainty I remembered from the Alpha Estate.I had no idea what she was putting into the mortar.Leaves. Bark. Something that looked suspiciously like a root she’d dragged

Chapter 34: KaleThe first thing I noticed was warmth. Not the sharp, oppressive heat of fever, but the steady, living warmth of a fire that had been tended through the night. It reached me in slow waves, easing the chill buried deep inside my bones. Beneath it came the scent of burning cedar, old stone warmed by the hearth, and herbs hanging somewhere overhead, drying in neat bundles until the air itself tasted green.I kept my eyes closed for another heartbeat, allowing the rest of my senses to wake before the rest of me did.The fire crackled softly somewhere to my left, the sound steady enough to tell me it had been fed recently. Wind skimmed across the shutters without finding a way through, carrying the muffled groan of snow-laden pines beyond the walls. Somewhere deeper inside the cottage, water dripped into a basin with slow, patient rhythm, each drop measuring the silence between them.No unfamiliar scent disturbing the air.Only then did I open my eyes. The rafters were low

Are you within?”My gaze drifted automatically toward the hearth.Kale hadn’t stirred. The fever had eased during the night, but he remained frighteningly vulnerable, and every moment I spent away from him felt longer than it truly was.The knocking came once more. For several moments I remained exactly where I was. Then, with a heaviness that settled somewhere beneath my ribs, I crossed to the small cupboard beside the door.Tucked behind a stack of drying herb baskets rested an old plank of pine no longer than my forearm. I had carved i

Chapter 32: AneiraBy the fourth morning, the cottage had settled into a rhythm I no longer needed to think about. The fire came first. It had become habit to wake before dawn, often without realizing I had slept at all. One moment I would be seated beside the hearth with a bandage in my lap, the next I would find my head resting against the back of the chair while the last embers glowed faintly beneath a blanket of ash. Every morning began the same way. I coaxed the fire back to life before the cold had a chance to settle too deeply into the room, feeding logs into the grate until warmth spread once more through the little cottage.Only then did I turn my attention to Kale. As always, I began with the things that mattered most. His breathing came first, followed by the steady beat of his pulse beneath my fingertips. Only after reassuring myself that both remained unchanged did I rest the back of my hand against his forehead, quietly bracing for the familiar heat that had plagued him

Chapter 31: AneiraThe first thing I became aware of was the ache.It settled into my neck first, then crept across my shoulders and down the length of my spine until every part of me protested the simple act of breathing. For one wonderfully blissful moment, I lay perfectly still, convinced I had merely slept in an unfortunate position after one too many hours bent over drying herbs. Then I realized I wasn’t in my bed.One eye cracked open. The fire had burned low during the night, leaving the cottage bathed in the pale blue light of dawn that slipped through the frost-laced windows. The embers glowed faintly beneath a blanket of ash, their warmth no longer reaching much farther than the hearth itself.I blinked several times before memory returned with uncomfortable clarity.Kale.The chair creaked as I pushed myself upright. At some point during the night my head had tipped against the backrest, one arm dangling over the side while the untouched piece of yesterday’s bread rested fo

Chapter 30: Aneira By the time I reached the cottage, I could barely feel my hands.Every muscle in my body protested as I hauled the sled across the final stretch of snow toward the front door. My shoulders burned. My back ached. My legs had long since stopped asking whether I intended to keep going and had simply resigned themselves to the fact that I was apparently determined to drag a mountain of a man through half the mountain. The door refused to cooperate.I should have expected as much. I leaned the saplings against the wall with considerably less care than they deserved and fumbled with the key until my numb fingers finally managed to fit it into the lock. The moment the door swung open, the familiar warmth of the cottage washed over me. It barely reached beyond the doorway, and the mountain’s cold still clung stubbornly to my clothes, but compared to the bitter wind outside, it might as well have been midsummer.“I know,” I puffed, dragging the sled inside. “I was hoping h
