Chapter 46: Aneira's POV

The knock came just after midday, three short raps against old wood, and every part of me went still before my mind had even caught up to why.

I knew that scent before I'd finished setting the knife down, and I groaned before I could stop myself. I hadn't slept enough, hadn't eaten enough, and had absolutely no patience left over for visitors.

Darius.

Of all the people who could have come here today, it had to be him.

"What's wrong?" Kale was already up, chair pushed ba

Chapter 67: Kale’s POVNobody had told the pack what I was here for. They'd worked it out on their own, the way packs always do, faster and uglier than anyone bothers explaining it to their face.I felt it walking onto the training ground. It was not curiosity, it was contempt, dressed up as indifference, thirty sets of shoulders angled just slightly away from me, like acknowledging me directly cost something they weren't willing to spend. I caught the shape of the story they'd built without needing anyone to say it out loud. Outsider shows up with the right blood and the wrong pack, wanting warriors to bleed for a war that was never theirs, expecting it handed to him because his grandfather sat in the right chair. They weren't wrong about what I wanted. They were wrong about what they thought that made me.I didn't try to fix the read they had on me. I've never once in my life found it useful to convince a room full of strangers I was something other than what I am, and I wasn't goin

Chapter 66: Aneira’s POV I woke to an empty bed and the ghost of warmth where Kale had been, gone before light without a word. I lay there a moment longer than I needed to, palm flat against the cooling sheet, before I made myself get up.I dressed in one of the gowns Kale's mother had sent over, a deep green wool with long sleeves and a modest neckline, simple enough to work in but finer than anything I'd have chosen for myself. I twisted my hair back out of my face and looked at myself in the mirror longer than I meant to, the same wide hips and soft stomach and thick thighs that had never once made me smaller no matter how many rooms in my life had wanted me to be, and told the woman looking back at me that today wasn't about being anyone's anything. Today was about the infirmary. It smelled the way every infirmary smells, herbs and old blood and something sharp underneath meant to cover both. The senior healer, a narrow woman named Yrsa with her red hair in a braid and suspicion

Chapter 65: Lyra’s POVI made it out of the council corridor without either of them noticing, which was the only mercy I got that night. I kept my pace even, kept my face doing whatever a maid's face is supposed to do when she's carrying laundry and not the worst thing she's ever heard, and I didn't let myself run until I'd turned two corners and put a wall between me and that door.‘The war gave us the excuse we needed.’‘Ashfang will already belong to better hands.’I heard those two lines on a loop the rest of the evening, through folding linens I don't remember folding, through a conversation with one of the kitchen girls that I answered on some kind of instinct because my actual mind was somewhere else entirely, replaying a voice I'd known for years until it stopped sounding familiar.Cassian.His voice, unmistakable, saying words that meant that the Alpha hadn't simply been lost to the war. Someone had made sure of it. Someone who had stood beside him for years, eaten at his tab

Chapter 64: Kale’s POV I woke at first light. The room felt too quiet without Aneira's breathing nearby, without Hex's restless shifting somewhere at the foot of the bed, and I hadn't slept as well for the absence of either. I dressed slowly, in no hurry to face a house that still felt more like a test than a home. The knock came sharp, cutting through whatever was left of the quiet. The guard on the other spoke. "Young Master. The Alpha wants to see you. Now.""Alone?""Alone."I understood immediately that whatever this was, it wasn't going to look like yesterday. Yesterday had been a performance, staged for a hall full of witnesses. This was something else.I thought about Aneira, whether she was already awake, whether she'd found her way to the infirmary yet without me there to walk her through it. For a moment I considered going to find her first, just to see her face before whatever this morning turned out to be. I decided against it. Ignoring my grandfather's first private sum

Chapter 63: Aneira’s POVThe guard who led me out of the hall didn't speak the whole way, and I didn't ask him to. I kept expecting the corridor to bend back toward Kale, some correction to whatever had just happened, but it never did. Doors passed. Faces passed, unfamiliar ones, all of them finding a reason to look at me twice.I told myself he'd send for me before the hour was out. Then I told myself before the day was out. The light through the windows went from white to gold to something dimmer, and no one came, and I understood slowly that this was simply how it was going to be, at least for today. I was with Kale, and Kale was somewhere in this house being reclaimed by people who had every right to him and none of them were required to remember I existed.Selene found me before I found anything else, materializing at the end of a corridor like she'd been waiting for me to finish sulking."You'll report to the infirmary," she said, no greeting first. "Tomorrow, first light. I ass

Chapter 62: Kale’s POVUncle Caelum was still gripping my shoulder like I might vanish again when the guards lowered their weapons at the woman's order. She hadn't raised her voice. I already knew she commanded a lot of respect within the pack. She studied me the way a smith studies a blade before deciding whether it's worth keeping. Neither welcoming nor disbelieving , just methodical, cataloging me piece by piece while Caelum wept openly beside her."Selene," she said, by way of introduction, nothing else. No title, though she clearly didn't need one. "I run what's left of the war council here. Caelum has feelings about your return. I have questions.""Ask them.""How do you prove you're the Alpha’s blood and not a very convincing thief."I turned my forearm over and showed her the mark, the same one I'd bared at the border, three lines burned pale into my skin. Selene barely glanced at it before her eyes went back to my face, like the mark had only confirmed something she already
