Chapter 20: Crossing the Threshold

 Rayen

The ballistics report felt like lead in my gloved hand.

I stood in the shadowed alcove of the ballroom, my fingers crushing the heavy paper until the edges creaked. Across from me, Lautaro didn’t move. He stood like a monolith carved from Andean rock, watching the color drain from my face while the distant sound of champagne glasses and soft violins drifted beyond the heavy velvet drapes.

The bullet that put your brother in the ground didn’t come from an Errázuriz gun.

“You’re lying,” I choked out again, but the words lacked teeth. They sounded thin and fragile, falling apart in the space between us.

“I don’t lie about blood, Rayén,” Lautaro said quietly.

His voice was flat and lethal, devoid of the theatrical arrogance he’d worn for the syndicate bosses outside. “If I had killed Aconcagua, I would have claimed it. I would have hung his coat from the gates of your family’s estate to show Santiago who ruled the city. I didn’t hide his body. Someone else did.”

“Beltrán…”

The name felt like glass on my tongue.

My mentor. The man who had sat at my father’s right hand. The man who had dried my tears when the news of Aconcagua’s execution reached our gates.

The man who had slipped the razor into my hand before I walked down the aisle today.

“We leave,” Lautaro commanded suddenly, stepping past me to peek through the heavy curtain. “The capos have seen enough of the united front for one night. The air in this room is getting thick.”

He didn’t wait for my permission. He reached down, his large, warm fingers wrapping around my wrist with an absolute, unyielding grip.

The contact burned through the delicate lace of my bridal glove, sending a sharp, electric shock straight up my arm. I tried to pull back an automatic, defensive recoil but his fingers only tightened, anchoring me securely to his side.

He led me out of the alcove, past the watchful, hostile eyes of two hundred armed syndicate men who held their breath as we passed.

I kept my head high, my jaw set, but beneath the heavy silk of my gown, my heart thrashed against my ribs.

Everything I’d built my life around for the past six months: the grief, the absolute hatred, the singular focus on bleeding Don Lautaro Errázuriz dry was crumbling into dust.

We crossed the grand marble foyer of the Las Condes estate, leaving the noise of the reception behind. Lautaro’s capos fell into formation behind us, their heavy leather shoes echoing off the stone walls.

But at the foot of the sweeping mahogany staircase, Lautaro held up a single, gloved hand.

“Stay at the perimeter,” Lautaro ordered his chief of security, his voice echoing through the vast, quiet hall. “No one enters the private wing. For any reason.”

“Understood, Don Lautaro.”

Lautaro turned back to me, his golden-brown eyes dark beneath the high, arched chandeliers. He gestured toward the stairs.

“After you, mi rosa.”

My legs felt like lead as I climbed the grand staircase, the heavy, embroidered train of my wedding dress dragging behind me like a chain.

Every step felt like a march toward an execution, though I no longer knew who was holding the axe.

Lautaro walked half a step behind me, his massive frame shielding my back. His presence radiated an intense, suffocating heat that made the back of my neck burn.

We moved down the long, dim corridor of the upper wing, away from the glass and light of the main house, deep into the heart of the estate.

The floor here was covered in thick, dark runners that swallowed the sound of our footsteps. High-security keypads glowed faint blue beside heavy, reinforced mahogany doors.

Finally, we stopped at the end of the hall before a pair of towering, double-arched doors.

Lautaro stepped past me, his shoulder brushing mine and sending a sudden spike of adrenaline through my veins.

He pressed his hand against the scanner beside the frame.

A soft, high-pitched chime echoed through the quiet hall.

The heavy doors unlatched with a sharp, pneumatic click.

Lautaro pushed the door open and stepped aside to let me enter the master suite.

The room was vast, bathed in the soft, bruised light of the midnight sky bleeding through massive floor-to-ceiling windows.

Outside, the rain had finally begun to fall, smearing the view of Santiago’s distant, glowing grid into streaks of liquid gold.

Inside, the air smelled of dark amber, expensive wood, and the faint underlying scent of gun oil and fresh leather.

A massive stone fireplace dominated the far wall, its embers burning low and casting long, dancing shadows across a king-sized bed wrapped in dark silk.

I took three slow steps into the room, the heavy silk of my skirt whispering against the hardwood floor.

Behind me, the massive mahogany doors swung shut.

CLACK-CLICK.

The automatic deadbolts engaged with a heavy metallic double seal that resonated straight through the floorboards.

The sound was absolute.

Final.

It cut off the rest of the house, the city, and the world outside.

I whipped around, my back slamming against the cool glass of a display cabinet as my hand instinctively dropped to my side, reaching for the slit in my gown where the razor blade was concealed.

Lautaro hadn’t moved away from the door.

He stood in the shadows, his tailored tuxedo jacket already unbuttoned, his broad shoulders blocking the only way out.

Slowly, deliberately, he raised his hands, unfastened the silk bow tie at his collar, and let it drop to the floor.

The silence between us became a physical weight, thick and suffocating.

“The doors lock automatically from the inside,” Lautaro said softly, his deep baritone rolling across the quiet room like low thunder.

He removed his heavy signet ring and set it on the side table with a quiet clink.

“No security detail. No capos. No audience to impress.”

He took a slow, deliberate step toward me.

“Just you, me, and the knife hiding in your corset,” he whispered.

My pulse hammered against my throat.

My fingers tightened around the sheath beneath my ribs, the steel biting hard into my flesh through the fabric.

“Stay back, Lautaro.”

He didn’t stop.

He walked until he stood directly in front of me, his massive height blocking out the dim light of the fireplace, trapping me in his shadow.

The heat radiating from him was overwhelming, cutting straight through the cold fear paralyzing my limbs.

He smelled dangerously good, rain, and cold power.

Slowly, without taking his eyes off mine, Lautaro reached out.

He didn’t reach for a gun.

He raised his hand and gently, agonizingly slowly, rested his warm, heavy palm against the right side of my waist right over the bulge of the hidden blade.

I gasped, my breath catching in my chest, but I couldn’t move.

I was paralyzed by the sheer intensity of his gaze, by the terrifying calm control he held over the space between us.

His thumb stroked the silk fabric over the sheath, a slow, agonizingly intimate movement that sent a wave of heat straight to my core.

“You brought steel into my house, Rayén,” Lautaro murmured, his voice dropping into a pitch-black whisper that vibrated against my skin. “You brought hatred into my bed. But you are looking at the wrong enemy.”

He leaned in closer, his lips hovering an inch from my jaw, his warm breath fanning across my skin.

“Now,” he whispered, his fingers pressing just a fraction harder against the concealed weapon at my ribs, “are you going to pull that blade… or are you going to let me show you who really put your brother in the ground?”

Before I could answer, a loud, metallic THUD echoed from the heavy double doors behind him, followed by the muffled, frantic beep of an override code being punched into the digital lock outside.

LAUTAROThe world didn’t end in a flash of light. It ended in the taste of concrete dust, copper, and burning insulation. The blast threw me backward off the bench. Iron shrapnel whined from the stone ceiling. For seconds, there was no sound except a thin ringing inside my skull. The red alarm lights flickered, died, and left us in the sickly yellow gloom of emergency strips.I couldn’t feel my legs.“Rayén!” I coughed, dragging myself forward on my elbows. My torn abdomen burned, blood slick against my waist. “Rayén!”Through the haze, a shape moved. She hadn’t run toward her mother’s voice. She was on her knees three feet from me, her silk dress blackened at the hem, shoving a heavy piece of steel off Millaray’s lower legs. Millaray groaned, soot covering her lips, but she was breathing.“Escape shaft,” I rasped, grabbing Rayén’s forearm. “The hydraulic override under the main desk. It leads into the old root cellar beneath my office. Move!”Rayén didn’t ask questions. She hauled Mi

RAYÉNThe klaxon was a scream that vibrated through the soles of my boots. Red light pulsed against the concrete walls of the tactical room, painting Lautaro’s pale face in flashes of fake blood before he even bled for real.“Air-strike beacon,” Millaray breathed, her hands hovering over the console. “They aren’t coming down the canyon to negotiate. They’re flattening the ridge.”Lautaro moved without a word.It was an ugly, broken movement. His left hand clamped over the soaked bandage at his ribs, his teeth bared in a soundless snarl. He reached for the tactical rig near the doorway, but his knees gave out.I caught him under the arms. His weight slammed into my chest, the metallic scent of blood filling my nose.“Stop,” I hissed. “You stand up right now, you spill your guts on the stone. Look at me.”He turned slowly. His dark eyes were clouded with exhaustion, but that iron inside him still burned.“The ridge,” he rasped. “The high pass tunnel. Millaray, get the drives.”“I’m not

MILLARAYThe smell of stale espresso hung in the tactical room. Outside the reinforced windows, morning light barely reached through the jagged peaks, turning the fog purple and gray.I leaned over the monitors, my eyes burning after six hours of watching thermal feeds. When the safehouse sent a red-alert breach last night, my heart nearly stopped. Lautaro’s encrypted signal went dark for three agonizing minutes before returning and routing his location to our secondary mountain fortress. He had survived the blast. But he wasn’t alone. The heavy iron doors at the end of the stone hall opened with a low hydraulic groan.I straightened, my hand moving toward the Glock at my hip.First came Lautaro. He leaned heavily against the inner archway, his dark hair wet with rain. A bloody makeshift bandage was wrapped around his torso beneath a torn tactical jacket. His skin was pale, but his jaw was still set. Then she stepped out from behind him.Rayén.My fingers tightened around the weapon.

RAYÉNThe safehouse suddenly smelled of lavender, bleach, and old wood, nothing like the gunpowder and blood from the vault. We were in a secluded penthouse on the edge of the financial district, an off-the-books property Lautaro owned through a shell company. Below us, Santiago carried on as if nothing had happened.Up here, the silence felt suffocating.I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring at my reflection. My wedding gown was ruined, its hem stiff with blood that wasn’t mine. My hand still throbbed from gripping the Sig Sauer.Behind me, I heard a leather belt being unbuckled, followed by a sharp breath.Lautaro sat on the dark leather sofa, his tactical vest and ruined shirt gone. My eyes went straight to the angry red gash along his right ribs. The rebar hadn’t gone deep, but it had sliced him badly. He held a needle and thick suture thread between his teeth, his amber eyes fixed on me.“Are you just going to stand there?” His voice was low and rough. “Or are you goin

RAYÉNThe white-hot line of thermite hissed through the steel blast doors, throwing sparks across the concrete floor.Through the damaged intercom, my mother’s voice came again, distorted by static.“Her blood belongs to Santiago.”I couldn’t move.My boots felt rooted to the floor. The forensic dossier was still clutched in my left hand, the pages crumpled beneath my trembling fingers.Everything I had believed for the past six months was falling apart. My hatred had never been mine.It had been a leash. My own mother had placed it around my neck, handed the other end to Beltrán, and watched as I walked willingly into this marriage with a blade hidden beneath my wedding gown.“Rayén, get behind the desk.”Lautaro’s voice cut through the noise. He stood beneath the flashing red emergency lights, his Sig Sauer aimed at the melting blast doors.Blood ran from his temple down the side of his face, but his hands remained steady.“Lautaro…”My voice shook.“She called me ‘the girl.’ She ta

RayenThe fall ended in a violent crash of splintered wood, crushed concrete, and a cloud of suffocating grey dust.We slammed into the lower level a dimly lit, reinforced sub-vault hidden deep within the foundations of the estate. The impact knocked the air straight from my lungs in a ragged gasp. My vision swam with static, dark spots dancing at the edges of my sight as I coughed against the burning powder coating my throat.Above us, the gaping hole in the ceiling rained down embers, hot plaster, and jagged shards of glass. The muffled thrum of distant gunfire still echoed through the stone structure above, but down here in the dark, the air was cold, damp, and smelling of ancient earth and gunpowder.I was lying on my back, completely pinned.Lautaro had taken the brunt of the fall. His heavy frame was braced over mine, his forearms planted on either side of my head, shielding me from the heavy debris that had plummeted after us. His face was inches from mine, covered in soot, a t
