Chapter 1:The blood oath of Santiago

Rayén Altiplano POVThe stench of my family’s empire burning did not smell like smelled like scorched cedar, wet plaster, and unburned diesel.I stood at the edge of the dirt path behind our estate in Providencia, the hem of my mourning dress weighed down by wet ash. Two days ago, this courtyard had been an oasis of white marble and magenta bougainvillea. Today, it was an open sewer of charred timber, melted iron, and black sludge.Behind me, two remaining loyalist soldiers lowered the plain pine box into the shallow trench. No priest stood over the ditch. No flowers lined the mud. There was only the dull thud of wood striking wet dirt.“Cover it,” I whispered. My voice was low and ragged from smoke and forty-eight hours of silent tears. “Quickly.”“Señorita Rayén,” Mateo muttered, his hands trembling against the handle of his shovel. “We shouldn’t be standing in the open. The Errázuriz soldiers haven’t fully cleared the surrounding blocks. If Don Lautaro’s scouts spot us—”“I said co

Chapter 2:Ashes of the Altiplano

Lautaro Errázuriz POVThe blood of a king takes longer to clean than his throne.I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass in the primary study of the Las Condes fortress, watching the late afternoon sun bleed out across the glass spires of Santiago.Behind me, the scent of cigar smoke drifted through the room, mingling with black coffee and the metallic tang of dried blood that no amount of bleach could fully strip from the mahogany floorboards. My father’s floorboards.I flexed my right hand, feeling the tight pull of fresh skin over my scarred knuckles. A quiet ache radiated through my jaw, but my face remained carved from stone.“You’re being soft, Lautaro,” a voice rasped from the leather armchair near the fireplace.Beltrán had served my father for thirty years. Beside him stood two regional captains, Valdés and Morales.“Soft?” I asked. “Explain yourself, Beltrán.”“The girl,” Beltrán spat, leaning forward and pointing toward the mahogany desk where the marriage contract rested. “

Chapter 3:The Don’s Demand

Rayén Altiplano POVThe smell of lavender oil always meant my mother was constructing a lie.It was a sharp, synthetic floral scent poured over the velvet pillows of the safehouse in Bellavista. Outside the narrow reinforced window, the alleyways were quiet, but cheap perfume tried to hide defeat.“Drink it, Rayén,” my mother murmured.Maitén Altiplano sat on the velvet sofa, wrapped in a cashmere shawl. Her hands shook as she pressed the cup toward me. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her dark hair falling over one shoulder.I didn’t take the cup. I remained near the door, my thumb resting over the safety of the nine-millimeter tucked into my trousers.“I don’t want tea, Mama,” I said. “I want to know why Beltrán is twenty minutes late.”“He is taking precautions,” she whimpered. “The Errázuriz monsters are everywhere. They took your father, Rayén. They took my sweet Aconcagua…” Her voice cracked into a sob.I looked down at her, wanting to hold her like I had as a little girl. But every ti

Chapter 4: Silk and passion

Rayén Altiplano POVThe smell of raw silk always reminds me of funerals. It carries a faint, dusty sweetness, the scent of money spent on things meant to cover up decay.I stood on a small wooden pedestal inside the dimly lit backroom of a tailor’s shop in Barrio Italia. The neighborhood outside was quiet, a maze of low-slung tile roofs, cobblestone alleys, and faded pastel storefronts. But inside this room, the air was thick with the scent of steam, machine oil, and pressed wool.Around my torso, metres of heavy cream-colored silk hung like a shroud.“Don’t breathe so deeply, child,” Doña Carmen muttered, her dry, papery fingers prodding my ribs as she pinned the waistline. “If you expand your lungs during the ceremony, the line of the bodice shifts half an inch. Half an inch is the difference between a clean draw and a snagged blade.”Carmen was old, her spine bent like a river willow, her skin mapped with deep, sun-baked wrinkles from seventy years in the valley. Her family had cra

Chapter 5: Mothers Tears

Lautaro Errázuriz POVThe steel shutters of the Las Condes fortress did not just keep bullets out; they kept the silence in.I stood on the second-floor gallery overlooking the inner courtyard, watching two technicians calibrate the thermal camera feed along the perimeter wall. The air was cold and sterile, smelling of gun oil, polished granite, and winter rain. Outside, high above the glass towers of Santiago, the Andes hung like dark jagged teeth against the twilight sky. This fortress was built by my father to survive a siege. Reinforced concrete, triple-laminated glass, biometric access at every strategic threshold. Yet, as I adjusted the cuff of my dark wool jacket, the entire structure felt hollow.A quiet click of heels sounded behind me.“You’ve doubled the guard rotation on the eastern gate,” a voice said. “And you added four tactical spotters to the roof line. Are we expecting an army, brother, or are you just afraid of a girl in a black shawl?”I didn’t turn around immediat

Terms of Surrender

Lautaro Errázuriz The matte-black stiletto rested against the dark velvet of the briefcase, catching the harsh foyer light. I didn’t touch it. I kept my eyes on Rayén.“A distraction,” I repeated quietly.Beside her, Morales shifted. His fingers tightened around his sidearm as the four tactical guards adjusted their positions. The faint rustle of Kevlar broke the silence.Rayén stood five feet away, completely still. The hem of her black lace dress was covered with gray ash from her family’s burned home. Her spine remained straight, her chin lifted, as if grief hadn’t taken everything from her.“Search her again,” Morales ordered. “Thoroughly this time.”“Stand down, Morales.”“Don Lautaro, if she brought another blade”“I said stand down.”Morales stopped, though his eyes remained fixed on Rayén.I took one slow step toward her.The closer I got, the more I noticed what she was trying to hide. The faint tremor in her lower lip. The exhaustion beneath her eyes.Yet she was still st

Chapter 7: The Gilded Cage

Rayén Altiplano The heavy oak door of the east wing suite clicked shut behind me. A second later, the dull mechanical thud of an electronic lock engaging from outside followed.I didn’t flinch.I stood in the entryway, counting seconds as silence wrapped around me.One. Two. Three. At six seconds, the HVAC hum changed. The air scrubbers were active. Sealed circulation. I released a slow breath, watching the pale mist disappear into the cold air.The room was vast and hollow.I crossed the polished hardwood, my silk dress whispering against my legs. Everything had been designed to overwhelm the marble fireplace and floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the valley. But to an Altiplano, a room was never just a room.It was a kill box, or an exit route.I approached the glass. It was thick, triple-laminated, reinforced with ballistic polymer. Outside, darkness swallowed the valley, broken by security floodlights sweeping across the courtyard. Two guards completed a perimeter sweep.Shift ro

Chapter 8: Steel Beneath Satin

Rayén Altiplano The sirens from three nights ago had long fallen silent, but the red glare of their strobe lights still felt burned into the back of my eyelids. The perimeter breach had been swept under the rug with terrifying efficiency.“A server error during a routine diagnostic,” Morales had claimed, his voice flat and his jaw tight as he escorted me back to my quarters. He thought I was stupid. But I had seen the fresh blood smeared across the floorboards near the server room when the guards thought I wasn’t looking. The Errázuriz empire was rotting from the inside, and the concrete walls of Las Condes were the only thing keeping it from collapsing. Now, those same walls felt like a noose.I stood on a low wooden pedestal in the center of the private dressing room while three seamstresses worked around me in nervous silence. Their heads remained bowed as they adjusted the gown. Before me stood a grand, gold-framed mirror. The woman staring back at me barely looked like myself.T

Chapter 9: The Sister’s Warning

Rayén Altiplano POVThe gunshots from yesterday’s raid had stopped by midnight, replaced by the relentless hiss of rain against the stone walls of Las Condes.Mateo’s men had failed to breach the main house. Lautaro’s tactical perimeter had held, forcing the armored trucks back at the southern gate before they could reach the gravel driveway. But the attack had shattered whatever fragile peace remained inside these walls.By dawn, the fortress smelled of spent gunpowder, wet concrete, and cold steel.I stepped onto the second-floor gallery, pulling my wool shawl tighter around my shoulders. The wedding gown from yesterday was gone, replaced by black trousers and a dark sweater. But I could still remember the hidden seam. The obsidian stiletto was now tucked safely against the small of my back beneath my sweater.Below, guards cleared spent shell casings from the courtyard while mechanics worked on a damaged armored SUV. A blowtorch flashed against the gray morning, throwing sharp shad

Chapter 10: Shadows over Santiago

Lautaro Errázuriz The smell of scorched circuitry and iron still hung in the war room long after the gunshots in the lower hall had stopped. The two men who had opened fire in the courtyard were dead. Their blood stained the marble steps near the side entrance. But their bodies had left behind something far more dangerous. They weren’t external infiltrators. They were Errázuriz men.Men who had eaten at my table, guarded my sister, and sworn loyalty to my father’s memory.I stood at the end of the mahogany council table, staring at the digital map of Santiago spread across its surface.La Pintana.San Bernardo.Quilicura.Red threat markers pulsed across the southern districts.Outside, rain hammered against the tactical shutters. Inside, my remaining council sat in tense silence.“They aren’t rogue cells, Don Lautaro,” Morales said. His voice was rough, his hand resting on the back of a leather chair. He looked older than he had three days ago, the exhaustion visible beneath his eye
