Eureka sat behind her large office desk, her eyes fixed on her laptop as she reviewed the collections sent by her lead designer. The telephone rang, distracting her. As she picked up the call, her secretary’s voice came through.

“I don’t need visitors, Ruth. What is it?” Eureka snapped. “When I give instructions, I expect you to follow them.”

“I’m deeply sorry, Ma’am. He’s insisting on seeing you,” Ruth said.

“And who the hell is that?”

“Mr. Blackwood, Ma’am.”

Eureka’s stomach twisted at the mention of the name. She sat in silence, pondering what to do.

“Are you there, Ma’am?”

“Send him in,” she finally said and ended the call. She took a deep breath, brushed her hair back with her hands, sat upright, and glanced at her reflection in the mirror. “Now you’re being self-conscious,” she muttered, recalling her words to Kaiden, prompting a small smile.

“Come in,” she responded to the soft knock on the door.

Kailani waited at her usual spot for Kaiden. He had promised to meet her there during lunchtime. As she was engrossed in her chemistry textbook, jotting down some compound names, Aveline and her two minions marched up to her, seized her book, and tossed it into a nearby trash can."What was that for?" Kailani snapped, though her soft voice didn’t make her sound irritated."How many times do I have to warn you to stay away from Kaiden?" Aveline groaned, arms akimbo. "You’re too daft to listen, aren’t you?""I don’t know what you’re talking about," Kailani denied, standing up to retrieve her book when Aveline yanked her hair, dragging her back in front of her."You don’t dare walk out while I’m still talking!" Aveline’s harsh voice echoed."Let go of me, you’re hurting me!" Kailani cried as Aveline’s grip tightened."Girls, take her to the female restroom," Aveline ordered her minions. "I need to teach this bitch a lesson.""I didn’t do anything to you. Let

Kaiden was in the principal’s office when Eureka rushed in. The principal had insisted that his mother be present before giving his verdict.“Son, what did you do?” Eureka asked.“You should have called me. You didn’t have to hurry,” Kaiden said nonchalantly, reclining on the visitor’s chair like he was the vice principal.“Good day, sir,” Eureka greeted the principal.“Good day, Miss Bennett. Please, have a seat,” the principal offered, and Eureka sat beside Kaiden, glancing at him to see if he was hurt.“Are you okay, son?” she asked, just to be sure.“I’m okay,” he replied.Aveline was sent for, and she returned with her arm strapped after visiting the school’s infirmary.“Look at what your son did to my daughter a couple of minutes ago,” the principal began, pointing at Aveline, who took a seat as her legs buckled.Eureka gasped. “What? Kaiden, why would you do that?”“He should be happy she’s not comatose,” Kaiden said as he glanced at Av

Kaiden came to meet Kailani as usual, but she wasn’t there. He searched for her, asking some students if they had seen her until he found her at the school’s backyard, crouched against the wall, tears rolling freely down her cheeks.“Kayla?” He rushed over to her, squatting beside her. “What’s wrong? Did Aveline bully you again?” he asked.“You need to stay away, Kaiden,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t want you close to me anymore. Thank you for always being there for me, but we have to act like strangers from now on.”Kaiden chuckled. “That’s a joke, right? What are you even talking about?” he asked.“We can’t be friends anymore,” she said. “The world is against us, okay? And it’s best we stay apart. We don’t have to sit together during lunchtime. We don’t have to talk, joke, or act like friends.” She opened her backpack and took out the phone and Wi-Fi he had given her. “I don’t need this anymore. Thanks for being a wonderful friend.”He d

It was finally Saturday, and Eureka felt restless. Kaiden was still upset with her for telling Kailani to stay away from him, but that wasn’t her biggest problem. She had woken up with a churning stomach and a persistent lump in her throat. The thought of going out with Mr. Blackwood unsettled her. She sat at her desk, sketchbook open, pencil in hand, but her mind kept drifting back to him.“Why don’t you remember me, Eureka?"His words echoed in her head as if he were standing right beside her, repeating them over and over. “He knows who I am,” she thought, setting her pencil down and focusing on her thoughts. “What if he could help me remember? What if he’s the key to regaining my memory? But how does he know me? Who was he to me? And why do I feel strange whenever I hear his name?”A soft knock on the door pulled her from her thoughts.“Come in,” she said.Mildred entered, her arms clasped behind her back as usual. “Miss Bennett, I think you need to talk to Kaiden. I don’t like how

Eureka burst into her room, tossing her handbag to the floor and dropping onto the bed in tears. She had just returned from the place where she was told she could find a clue about her daughter’s whereabouts. Unfortunately, the woman she was supposed to meet had died some months ago.“Someone should tell me my child is okay, please,” she sobbed, burying her face in her palms.Kaiden walked in, standing by the door and watching his mother for a few minutes before approaching her. He placed a hand on her shoulder, and she jolted slightly, lifting her teary eyes to him. He sat beside her.“What did she say?” he asked.“The woman is dead, Kaiden. I can’t find Kelsey,” she cried.“You need to calm down, Mom. We’ll keep looking, and I’m sure we’ll find her soon. Stop crying,” he consoled her.“Why did they have to take my child away from me?” she continued crying. “I gave birth to her in that damn hospital. They didn’t even allow me to see her. They didn’t let me h

“Have a nice day, gentlemen,” Eureka said, standing up and picking up her handbag. She had just concluded a meeting with some of her new investors. “Same to you, Miss Bennett,” two of the investors responded, except for the third, who requested to speak with her privately. Mr. David Mathews was a tall, athletic, and lanky CEO of a multinational textile company. Throughout the meeting, Eureka couldn’t help but notice the piercing glances he sent her way. He was also the first to support her proposal and had promised to provide immense support for her upcoming campaign. “What’s this meeting about, Mr. Mathews?” Eureka asked, trying to sound polite, though she disliked being pulled aside like this. “I’ll get straight to the point, Miss Bennett. This isn’t another business discussion,” he said, his piercing eyes locking onto hers. Eureka was forced to look away. “I’m stating the obvious. You’re enchanting, and it takes everything in a man not to fall for you at first sight. I’d love to

Eureka went grocery shopping because Kaiden insisted she prepare his dinner herself. “What exactly are we shopping for, son? What do you want me to cook?” Eureka asked, turning to face Kaiden, who was following behind her, filming them. She disliked cooking these days, unlike when she was still married to Raymond. But whenever Kaiden insisted, she never said no. He paused the video. “Macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, and cornbread,” he listed, caring little about his mother’s annoyed expression. “You know something, Kaiden,” she said, turning back to the produce shelf. “I can only make macaroni and cheese for you. Mildred will do the rest.” “Why, Mom?” Kaiden frowned. “Since we got to this city, you haven’t made a single meal for me. You have to cook everything, or I won’t eat tonight.” “I guess you enjoy starving,” she teased, picking a vegetable from the shelf. “Mom!” “Just kidding. But this will be the first and last time I cook for you this year. Deal?” “That’s so mean,”

Kaiden, on the other hand, found Kailani’s textbook in the car. It had slipped from her hand while he was kissing her. “Clumsy girl,” Kaiden smiled to himself. “Let’s go back, driver. She’ll need the book over the weekend,” he said. The driver didn’t object and took the nearest U-turn.Kaiden was allowed inside after introducing himself as Kailani’s friend and Eureka’s son. As he entered the house, he stumbled back as Kailani bumped into him at the door. She couldn’t bear the torture anymore—she had to run.“Kayla?” Kaiden called out in shock, holding her in place. She was drenched in sweat, blood trickling down her broken temple. The back of her shirt was stained from the hot iron Delilah had used on her.“Where’s that slut?!” Delilah groaned, running out of the kitchen and halting abruptly at the sight of Kaiden. Kailani flitted behind him, hiding from her tormentor.“What the hell is this?” Kaiden was too stunned to even shout. His voice was barely audible, his heartbeat drumming i

Kaiden walked into the room after leaving to get some snacks for Kailani, but she had already fallen asleep. He sat on the edge of the bed, his soft eyes trailing her from head to toe, then he held her hand, squeezing it gently.“I knew something was off when that bitch entered the class on that ugly day," he thought. “The energy felt different. She had your voice, your face, but she didn't have your heart. I wish I had pointed that out, I wish I could have looked her in the face and told her she was not my Kayla. How could I? She bloody had your face and there was no way you would be two in the world with striking resemblance,” he paused as she stirred. He patted her arm gently and she relaxed again.“I'm deeply sorry, Kayla. The second time you need me and I wasn't able to help you. Even Mom couldn't. We all couldn't, probably because we didn't know evil exists to that extent. You'll heal perfectly, okay?” he said with a warm smile appearing on his face.

“You said she would be fine, doc. What the hell is wrong with my daughter now? Why is she so scared? What does she see?” Eureka asked as she barged into the doctor's office.“You need to relax, Miss Bennett. Please have a seat," the doctor said calmly. Eureka hesitated before sitting down.“Your daughter is traumatized. She must have experienced some ugly events that are causing her reaction. You need to understand that it takes time for her to get over that scene. That’s why I suggest she starts seeing a psychotherapist,” the doctor explained."Are you saying that my daughter has a mental disability? She spoke just fine to us, then all of a sudden she started reacting strangely.”"Your daughter is emotionally affected. Psychotherapy doesn’t mean she’s crazy. “Kayla?” Kaiden muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. He dropped on his knees in her front, cupping her face, his hands trembling. “Kayla, can you hear me? It's Kaiden," he said, then untied her. He checked her pulse, listened to her heartbeat, but heard nothing. Silence. The kind that paralysis someone with fear. Her body? She was cold; eerily cold. “Kayla, I'm here now, okay? I came to take you home. Are you listening? You have to say something to me. You have to get angry, to scold me, to tell me how disappointed you are. I should have protected you as I promised but I failed again. Raymond walked to Kaiden's side, meeting his serious eyes. "We're here to rescue your sister, that's if we haven't missed our chances yet. Kaiden jumped back abruptly, landing on the hard floor with a thud as a black car swept past the spot he had stood just seconds earlier. Blood seeped from his elbow, which had been bruised by the rough marble floor. His head spun for a moment, his vision blurring. Hayley rushed forward, crouching beside him. “Kaiden, are you okay?” she asked, checking his arm. Kaiden regained himself, leaped to his feet, and pulled his hand away from her just as his driver ran over. "Don't touch me!” he snapped, startling Hayley, who trembled a bit. "Go inside!” "What did I do? Why are you mad at me?” Hayley asked, her voice shaking. "I said go inside! Don’t you listen?” he yelled, and she quickly rushed inside, locking the gate. “Are you fine?" Kaiden's driver asked. “Isn’t it obvious?" Kaiden retorted, walking back to the road. “Did you get the plate number? Kaiden entered the car beside Kailani. She had her phone in hand, scrolling through social media as usual. People do change, he knew, but not this fast. Not a sister he knew so well transforming into a nightmare in the blink of an eye. Whenever he stared at her, something gnawed at him, a feeling he couldn’t quite comprehend. The excitement, the unstoppable feelings, the joy he felt at seeing her were no longer there. He could no longer hear his heart thump loudly in his chest like it would explode if he stopped seeing her. He could feel the distance, the void, the silence between them even when they talked often. Something was missing, though he couldn’t place his hands on it at first, but Hayley’s video sparked a lot of imagination. Constantly, his mind twirled back to that day at school, when everything changed. He knew he felt it then. The sickness meant something. He hardly fell sick, but everything changed when he met her, when he connected with her, and her absence always cos
