Cassandra walked into the room, a cozy, small bedroom with toys littered on the floor. A warm neon light flickered. A teenage boy, the same height and hairstyle as Kaiden’s, sat on a couch, watching soccer on the small flatscreen TV mounted against the wall. He pretended not to notice Cassandra’s presence as he focused on the screen.

“Hey, my baby boy,” she sank into the couch beside him, wrapping her arms around him, then kissed his temple.

“Let go!” he snapped, pulling away from her.

“Oh, come on, son. Are you still mad at me?” she pouted, but the boy didn’t look her way. “I’m sorry. I had a lot to do at the office, that’s why I haven’t been visiting you for a while. Have you forgiven mommy?”

“What do you even do, Mom?” he asked, facing her. “We’ve been back in this goddamn country for the past two years. I’m stuck in this house with those straight faces you call bodyguards. You preferred hiring a home tutor for me when I could go to school with

The moment Eureka and the twins returned home, they found Raymond standing by the veranda, waiting patiently for them. Eureka paused for a second, her eyes darkening.“What is he doing here?” Kaiden muttered, already annoyed. As they moved closer, Kailani enveloped Raymond in a tight hug, whimpering while he stroked her hair. “What’s the problem, baby? Why are you crying?” he asked softly.“Why did you have to go, Dad? I missed you a lot,” she expressed while still holding tightly to the embrace.“I missed you more. I’m just putting some things together first, then I’ll be back, okay? Stop crying,” he consoled her.Kailani pulled away slightly, locking eyes with him. “I… we went to see my adoptive mom,” she muttered. “She looks well now. For the first time in years, she hugged me. She didn’t yell at me. She chatted with me, and I felt at peace. But I couldn’t stay with her longer. Mom said she still has a long time to spend at the psychiatric hospital. I’m happy, Dad. But I don’t want

The car parked at a psychiatric hospital garage, Eureka and the twins alighting gracefully. “Just wait up for me. I’ll go see one of the doctors, then we can see her, okay?” Eureka told them.“Got it,” Kaiden affirmed, leaning against the car and holding up his phone.Kailani, on the other hand, fidgeted, rubbing her clammy hands on her dress. She suddenly looked pale and nervous, her heart thumping faster.“If she causes you so much anxiety, then why are we here?” Kaiden asked, noticing her uneasiness.“Kaiden, do you think she’s healing… fast now? Do you think… she still hates me?” she queried, her voice shaky.“How am I supposed to know all this, Kayla? You know you don’t have to be here if you aren’t comfortable, right? I could call Mom and tell her you’ve changed your mind,” he stated, his tone cold.Kailani took a deep breath, trying to relax her mind. “No, don’t,” she confirmed. “I really want to see her. I don’t know why I’m scared; I guess she can’t hurt me anymore, right? Le

“Hi, honey. How are you feeling today?” Eureka asked, sitting on the edge of the bed by Kailani's side.Kailani sat up, pulling the blanket off her legs. "I saw them again,” she muttered, hanging her head low.Eureka placed her hand on the girl's and sighed. "It's okay. It's going to take time to forget everything. Or… do you want to share exactly what happened with Mom?” Eureka asked, hoping the girl found the courage to tell her this time. If she couldn't speak to her own mother, how could she open up to a therapist?Kailani went quiet for a minute. “I can't, Mom," she whispered.“May I know why?"Kailani glanced at her curious mom, then shook her head. “Can I tell you when I'm ready?"“You have all the time in the world, sweetie. Just know that I'll always be here whenever you need me."“Thanks, Mom. Can I ask you a favor, please?"“I'll do anything for you," Eureka said, gently squeezing the girl's hand.“Can… can I see my second mom?” she asked, her voice cracking."Do you really

It took Kaiden over ten minutes to get Kailani to pull herself together. They remained in that hugging position the entire ten minutes. “Are they gone now?” Kaiden asked as Kailani pulled away from the hug.She looked at the door and nodded. “Thank you.”“Anytime. I just want you to know that you’re always safe from now on, okay? So, are you ready to meet your friend now?” he said. Kailani glanced at Stetson, who was seated on the vanity chair, patiently waiting for her to recover.“Yes,” she smiled at Kaiden, then they both walked back to the bed.“Are you okay now, Kay?” Stetson asked, standing, his bouquet still clutched in his hand.“Sorry about that,” she said. “Are you going to a wedding?” she asked, referring to the flowers he was holding.“Of course not. This is for you,” Stetson held it out to her.“Aww, thank you,” she took it and sniffed. “Smells nice,” she sat back beside Kaiden while Stetson returned to the vanity chair.“Sorry I haven’t been able to visit. We were stuck

Eureka paced back and forth in her room, pressing a phone to her ear, her eyes swirling with venomous lava, her jaw and fists tightened.“So fucking what?" she snapped. “That bitch is everywhere. She was at the mall, scaring the shit out of my daughter, and you're saying you can't locate her? Look, Mr. Roger, I won't take your incompetence lightly. You were supposed to be the best of the best. Try harder. Track her damn location for me. I want a positive response soon." With that, she threw the phone against the wall, causing it to break beyond repair.“Argh!" Her voice rumbled through the room.“Easy, Eureka," Raymond said as he entered the room.“Don’t, Raymond!" She spun to face him, her eyes burning. “Don't ever tell me to take it easy! I don't even want to see you. Get out of my room!" she yelled, her chest rising and falling rapidly.“I want us to talk, please. I have a confession to make," he said."You've never done anything good in your life, and I don't want to listen to you

Kaiden stepped out of the car, holding a small bag for Kailani. He had a shoot at the company, so he went to the office with Raymond as his driver, leaving Kailani with their mom. He ran his fingers through his freshly styled hair, the soft breeze kissing his skin.“Kaiden, can we talk for a minute?” Raymond asked, walking around the car to block Kaiden’s path.“The only thing I need to listen to now is a running shower,” he stated, walking off.Raymond moved to stand in front of him again, earning himself a death glare from Kaiden. “I know you’re exhausted; it won’t take long.”Kaiden took a step back from him. “You’ve just three minutes.”“With the help of insurance, my company is back in shape. Also, they’re working on my home now. It doesn’t mean I’m going to leave, okay? I just want you to know that I’m going to help you and your mom find where Cassandra is hiding. And I hope that after everything, you and I can work out our differences. Maybe we could go play catch, fishing or g

Melissa stood by the door, staring at Jared as he worked on the desktop. He was also on the phone with a client or whoever it was, so he didn't notice her entry. The secretary had allowed her in when Melissa said she was paying Jared a surprise visit and didn’t want it spoiled. Besides, the secretary wasn’t informed that Melissa shouldn't be allowed into Jared's office without his consent. After all, they had seen her a couple of times before. So, when Jared ended the call and attempted to retrieve a file from his drawer, he saw her standing, her eyes glued to him.“Lisa?" He froze on the spot, his heart skipping a beat. “You didn’t tell me you were coming."“That’s what surprises are for,” she smiled, walking over to him. “Did it work?”“I bet it did, but I still insist you should have called me before coming,” he said, sitting back in his chair.“Oh, should I leave then inform you if I ever want to come back?” she snapped, though her voice was low.“Have a seat. Don’t throw tantrums

Kailani withdrew her hand from Kaiden's, stumbled back, turned, and took to her heels.“Hey, wait!" Kaiden rushed after her. “What's wrong, Kayla? You need to stop."Kailani didn’t stop. She ran as fast as her trembling legs could take her, pushing past people and crashing into their shopping carts.“Sorry," Kaiden apologized to the shoppers. “Wait up, Kayla!"Kailani stumbled upon a staircase, falling to the floor with a soft thud. That didn’t stop her. She swallowed the pain, scrambled to her feet, and tried to dash off when Kaiden grabbed her hand."Let me go!” she cried, tears rolling down her cheeks."Stop, Kayla. You need to relax,” Kaiden said gently."I want to go home, please,” she sobbed."Fine, let's go,” Kaiden agreed, leading her out of the mall."What's wrong? Where are your shopping bags?” Raymond asked as the twins reached the parking lot."Just drive and stop asking silly questions,” Kaiden snapped, opening the door for Kailani. She quickly got in and buckled up. Raym
