The silence in the room was thick and heavy, like a blanket smothering all sound. Kael stood just inside the door, his body frozen. His eyes moved from Thane’s face to the bed, where Elira slept on, unaware of the war being fought over her. The sight of the two breakfast plates on the table felt like a physical punch to his gut.

Thane didn’t move. He stood his ground between Kael and the bed, his posture not aggressive, but solid. It was the stance of a man who belonged here.

Kael felt the need to know, to understand any part of her that had been hidden from him, broke through his shock. His voice was low and rough when he finally spoke.

Thane’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he said nothing. His silence was a wall.
