General Callan stayed. Theia was aware of his every moment. She was so tensely wound she thought she might break, and Callan was so easily calm and casual she wanted to scream. Wanted to rage at him for intruding on their sacred time. But she did non of those things. No, instead she smiled and played and pretended it was all normal.

They spent the whole hour before the twins' supper in the garden. Theia was weaving a crown of daisies for Isme and Callan watching Theia intently through side way glances as Mikka narrated an elaborate battle against invisible foes and Callan indulged the make-believe story.

In the end, both children were talking over one another in the joyful, chaotic way of siblings. Theia listened to all of it and tried to interact with the General as little as possible. It was a balancing act, not to outright ignore him but not offer too much either. She had so very little left of herself as it was.

She had grown skilled at observing and listening, it was, perhaps, the only skill her imposed isolation had given her. She noticed things others missed, maybe it was also ingrained in her as way to protect herself. She noticed the way Isme chewed her lip when she was working up courage to ask something, the particular pitch of Mikka's laugh when he was truly happy rather than merely performing happiness for an audience. She committed each one of these details to memory. So she could replay them when the greyness took hold of her. Cling to them as a rope to walk her back to life.

‘Will you come to supper tonight?’ Isme asked, settling the daisy crown crookedly atop her curls. Theia cringed internally and pointedly did not look at the general, who had moved closer and was lying in the grass beside her. Isme asked this every time, with the same hopeful lift in her voice, and every time Theia had to find a new way to say the same old no.

‘Not tonight, sweetling.’ She tapped the tip of Isme's nose, drawing a giggle. ‘But I'll see you tomorrow. I promise.’

‘You always promise.’

‘And doesn’t Theia always keep her promises, little princess?’ Callan's husky voice replied before she could, an irritating smirk on his lips. Isme's lips turned down ever so slightly, like what he said didn’t quite sit right, but her innocent little brain couldn’t understand why.

It wasn’t lost on Theia that the General used her name, he always used her name around them. He never called her princess unless official ears could hear or it was to drawl a sardonic reprimand at her.

She smiled as Isme, a tight, forced smile despite her efforts. To aware of general’s hands edging to close to her leg, she found the will to speak softly to Isme. ‘The General is right, I always keep my promises. I will come tomorrow. I promise.’ She said, knowing the general would like that she said he was right. Theia at least knew he was right on this one thing. And that is what she clung to as evidence that she had not entirely failed at being present in this world, whatever else it had denied her.

The bell for the children's supper rang faintly from the palace, and before Edith, their Nanny, could come looking for them, the general rose and took both their hands, in way that left no room for argument, and ushered them out the garden. They both gave Theia a one armed hug goodbye, and the General gave her a devious half smile and a slight nod of his head.

Her stomach dropped. She knew it wouldn’t be the last she saw of him today.

Still, Theia watched the twins go with the ache that came at the end of every stolen hour. Half grief, half gratitude, indistinguishable from one another. She stayed in the garden a while longer, unable to force herself back to her room, knowing what the rest of the night had in store for her.

She stayed until the sky purpled into evenlight and the roses lost their colour to the dark. She told herself, as she always did, that her time with them was enough. Then she forcibly dragged her unwilling legs out the garden and along the dimly lit halls to her wing. She climbed the stairs to her rooms, willing the familiar numbness to take her.

'That is twice now someone has conveniently forgotten to tell you something directly concerning your life,' Koda continued. The humour was gone from his tone, replaced by an edge that made the nearby guards stiffen.Nikolai did not look at Koda. Instead, he set his goblet down with a sharp click that drew an immediate hush across their section of the table. He looked directly at King Aldric.'You arranged a public celebration for my wife and neglected to mention it to her,' Nikolai said. His voice was flat, devoid of warmth or inflection, but it carried across the high table like a blade sliding over stone.King Aldric bristled, clearly irritated at being challenged in front of his court. 'It is a minor matter, King Nikolai. She is my daughter, living under my roof until, at least until tomorrow. Such domestic matters are still handled by my household.''She is your daughter in this room,' Nikolai replied softly. Too softly. The surrounding air seemed to thin, the ambient temperature

Nothing about this family had ever operated by the rules he was describing, and she suspected he knew that better than anyone at the table. There was, however, no version of saying so that would not make her sound petulant in front of these strangers and a man she had not yet learned how to read. So, she said nothing and instead reached for the cup in front of her, to give her hands something to do.Koda, two seats down, said, easily enough that it did not draw attention, 'No one told her.' It was not quite a question, and it was aimed, she realised, at nobody in particular, a fact simply set down on the table to see who might pick it up.Nobody did.Elior, who sat across from Koda and was beside General Callan, did not say anything either, but she felt him look at her once, briefly, in the same way he had in the throne room. A gaze that was assessing the weight of the room rather than its appearance. She found herself sitting straighter without deciding to, the old instinct kicking i

A knock came, and Theia’s stomach dropped. Her heart leapt into her chest with its usual panic. It was only as she reasoned that the door hadn’t immediately opened after the knock and that she hadn’t heard his heavy footsteps that she was able to calm her body.Theia was still in her nightclothes, hair unbound and damp at the temples from the basin, when the knock came, brisk and unfamiliar, and a maid she did not recognise put her head round the door when Theia answered.'Your Highness, sorry, Your Majesty.’ She dipped her head curtly. ‘You're wanted in the small dining hall,' the maid said. 'Breakfast. His Majesty and the Ashbane party are already seated.''Breakfast,' Theia repeated dumbly, and made a face both at the idea of eating breakfast with people and the formal title. The word did not attach itself to anything she understood. She had not eaten a meal at a table with other people for a very long time. So long she couldn’t even really remember the last time. Food arrived on t

'Her horse comes with us,' Nikolai said, before Koda could finish enjoying himself. 'I never said otherwise.''You didn't say anything at all, which is exactly the problem I'm raising.' Koda folded his arms. 'And while we're at it, there's no one on her door tonight. Not one guard, Nico. She's the Queen of Ashbane now, as of about six hours ago, in a palace full of people who'd sooner see the treaty fail than see her leave it breathing, and you forgot something a green recruit wouldn't forget on his first posting.'A flicker of genuine annoyance, directed solely at himself, crossed Nikolai’s face. ‘A fair point. Irritatingly so.’'I do enjoy these moments,' Koda said, entirely without remorse.'I'm certain you do.' Nikolai exhaled, some of the coldness he'd worn all evening finally easing out of him now that there was no one left in the room to perform for. 'See it done tonight. Someone who answers to one of us, not palace staff.''Already arranged,' Koda said, insufferably pleased wi

'Koda, it’s natural, I think, for her to be sad and scared. And I think you feel for the position she’s in… but…' Nico’s voice had gone softer, but before he could finish, Koda interrupted.'There’s more. I saw bruising at her wrist, old enough to have yellowed, but it was bad enough that I could tell someone must have almost broken it. And then that damn general appeared again, looking for her. The way he spoke to her… She went so still, like I think she actually stopped breathing. She was afraid, more afraid than she was during the blood-binding. Plus, that fucking general was vibrating with rage while watching the binding. He has placed some sort of claim on her, or tried to.'Both Nico and Elior considered Koda’s words.'He looks at her like she belongs to him,' Koda said. 'I've seen that look before on men who own hounds they've beaten into obedience. I don't need your gift to know what that means,' he added to Elior.Nico crossed his arms. He too had felt something odd about the

The room Nikolai chose was small and windowless, selected for exactly that reason, to limit anyone’s ability to observe him more than necessary. Nikolai had barely closed the door before Koda rounded on him.Koda was pissed. His face lost its usual casual composure.'You could have told her something. Anything. Mother-fucking Goddess, Nico. She doesn’t have a fucking clue what happened to her. And you just… you just stood there like you were carved from stone, letting her believe you’re a monster so she’d be frightened of you.' Koda wasn’t shouting, but he wasn’t calm either.Nikolai’s hackles rose at the accusation. He didn’t want it to be this way, but he had little choice. He knew Koda knew that. He strained to stay calm, to keep his voice even and hard. 'The world believes I am a monster, Koda, or did you forget? There are witnesses everywhere here. I cannot afford to be seen as kind towards the girl.''How about just not treating her like she’s nothing?' Koda's voice climbed, and
