Chapter 4

Author: Palma W
The purification den was built beneath the Black Wolf castle.

The stone doors slammed down in succession, sealing away every scent and sound from outside.

Ronan confiscated every communication crystal I had.

Only the cracked fang pendant remained, hidden in the lining of my cloak.

Deep inside the den, iron racks stood against the walls, stained with dried black blood. Rusted chains lay piled in the corners.

This didn't look like a place to wash away a mate's scent. It looked more like a torture chamber.

Selena pulled on a pair of gloves and began mixing the Purification Potion in the cauldron. She poured the Silverthorn Elixir into the Rotroot Powder, and the mixture immediately frothed into a sickly gray-white foam.

The smell hit me, and my stomach lurched.

"Touch my cub, and you'll pay."

Selena stepped closer. "Pay? With what? You're nothing but a castoff. Trash, who bonded with a Rotskin Beastman. I'm Ronan's mate."

Ronan stood before me.

"Do as you're told, and I'll keep you as my secondary mate."

I slapped him.

The sharp crack echoed through the den.

Ronan slowly turned his head back. When our eyes met again, all warmth had vanished from his gaze.

"Hold her down."

Two she-wolves stepped forward and seized my arms. I desperately tried to shield my belly, but they forced me down into the stone chair.

Selena glared at me, her eyes blazing with hatred. She lowered her voice to a whisper. "I'll make sure you and the filthy little bastard in your belly die here. You were never worthy of competing with me."

I could feel the cub growing more restless inside me.

I slipped a hand to the cracked fang pendant. When Kaelren gave it to me, he had written on his board.

"Soak the grooves with blood. The Lion Guard will find you."

I gripped the pendant. The fang's tip pierced my palm.

Blood seeped into the grooves along the fang.

Ronan noticed my movement and ripped my cloak open.

The cracked fang pendant fell into view.

He snatched up the fang and let out a mocking laugh.

"So this is what that creature gave you? He couldn't even afford to give you a whole fang."

He yanked hard. The cord snapped. But the blood had already seeped into the grooves. A faint silver light flickered along the cracks, then quickly faded.

Ronan tossed the pendant on the ground.

"Make her drink it."

The two she-wolves grabbed my jaw while Selena approached with the rest of the Purification Potion.

I clenched my teeth.

"Evelyn, don't make me hurt you."

Ronan held my shoulders down.

"Once the cub is gone, you'll thank me."

The bowl touched my lips. At that instant, the entire underground den shuddered violently.

Then the deep, mellow blast of a war horn pierced through layer after layer of stone doors.

Everyone in the room went pale.

"The White Lion Court's war horn?"

The next second, the outermost stone door exploded inward.

The overwhelming aura of a royal beast spirit swept through the den. Every Black Wolf Beastfolk's knees buckled, forcing them to their knees.

Taren's head snapped up.

Heavy footsteps drew closer, one after another.

White Lion Guards poured into the den, crunching over the shattered stone.

A tall figure entered behind them.

Silver-white hair fell over his shoulders. His golden beast-like eyes were ice-cold. His strikingly handsome face was almost razor-sharp in its perfection, yet black scars from corrupted blood still marred the side of his neck. His claws remained half-retracted.

The night before my investiture, I asked Kaelren, "Why were you at the Moon Festival three years ago?"He was silent for a long moment before taking me to the old mill.No one had lived there for years. The patches he had sewn onto the roof were still there. In one corner lay the first cloak he had ever tried and failed to make.Kaelren sat by the hearth and finally told me the whole truth.Three years ago, the Black Wolf Clan had conspired with hyena mercenaries to assassinate him.The corrupted blood curse had destroyed his beast core and disfigured his face. It had also marked his royal scent, allowing the assassins to track him the moment he shifted into his beast form. His only choice was to disguise himself as an unmarked Rotskin Beastman and hide among the crowds at the edge of the Moon Festival. The bonding ring Ronan had kicked away rolled to his feet. When my blood fell onto the ring, it broke the curse's hold on his scent.I had thought I was simply choosing someone no one e

After the fall of the Black Wolf Clan, the Nightrot mining district came under the joint administration of the Twelve Clans.Kaelren's status as Crown Prince was restored. But he did not immediately ascend the throne.Nor did I move into the palace. The Sanctuary had only just been established. Too many low-ranking beastfolk still needed treatment.A few months later, I went into labor. The royal physician arrived and immediately ordered Mara and every unmarked midwife out."This is a royal cub. The birth must be attended by royal physicians."Mara's expression darkened, but she didn't argue. She had seen too many low-ranking healers driven away before.Kaelren blocked the doorway."Who says she has to leave?"The royal physician hesitated."Your Highness, she doesn't bear a clan mark—""Three years ago, when I was at my weakest, not a single royal physician came for me. Evelyn and the people you look down on are the reason I'm still alive."He looked at Mara."You're delivering this c

The Council held a public trial for the Black Wolf rebellion. The recordings preserved in the scent-memory stones left no room for denial. The Duchess sat before the tribunal, her composure unshaken. She did not plead for Ronan. She even admitted that she had ordered him to keep both Selena and me by his side."Golden Feather blood can restore blighted land and beast cores. Selena knows how to treat blood corruption. Whichever female Ronan ultimately bonds with will benefit the clan all the same."Ronan looked at his mother as though he were seeing her for the first time."You said everything you did was for me."The Duchess merely glanced at him."You are the future duke. Your value lies in securing resources for our clan."The color drained from Ronan's face. All this time, he had thought he was fighting to escape my shadow. In the end, he was nothing more than a tool in his mother's eyes.Selena was brought to the witness stand. She did not deny experimenting on low-ranking beastfol

On the day of the Great Beast Migration Rite, the White Stone Plains were crowded with beastfolk from all Twelve Clans.Kaelren had yet to be reinstated, so Lucius occupied the royal court's seat as acting Crown Prince.Ronan's core seal had been partially lifted. His mother claimed he wanted to prove his loyalty to the court during the rite. The moment I saw him, I knew something was wrong.Ronan stood in full knight's armor, a squad of Black Wolf cavalry behind him.He didn't look like a prisoner. He looked like a beastman already dressed to play the hero.Shortly after the migrating herds entered the plains, the lead great-horned beast suddenly went berserk. Then the rest of the herd erupted into chaos, bellowing as they charged toward the court's viewing platform.Panic swept through the crowd.Someone shouted, "It's the corrupted blood! The White Lion prince was never truly cured!"The rumor spread like wildfire.Lucius immediately ordered Kaelren's beast core sealed."Until we de

The royal court soon issued its ruling. They agreed to keep the treatment camp but ordered me to provide blood every seven days to monitor the corrupted blood inside Kaelren's body.I threw the order back onto the table in front of the royal physician."No."The physician froze."This is for the Crown Prince's safety.""My blood is mine. The Court has no right to take it whenever it wants."Kaelren stood beside me without answering for me.But that evening, just as I was about to enter the quarantine zone within the Corrupted Swamp, Kaelren had his royal guards seal the gate."There are too many patients infected with corrupted blood out there. You're carrying our cub. You can't go in."I looked at the guards blocking the door."Move."The guards didn't budge.Kaelren walked up the steps."Evelyn, I'm not trying to control you. I just don't want you putting yourself in danger.""Ronan said the same thing. He said he abducted me to save me."Kaelren stopped mid-step.I continued, "He de

Three days after Kaelren's return, the Council of the Twelve Clans convened to review his claim to the throne. The White Lion Court had long since declared Kaelren dead and named his cousin, Lucius, the new Crown Prince. Now Kaelren had suddenly returned, still bearing traces of corrupted blood on his body. Many nobles refused to accept him."Who can guarantee the corrupted blood won't return?""How can a prince who once couldn't even take beast form lead the Twelve Clans?""The Golden Feather young chief had bonded with him. Was it merely a coincidence, or had the Golden Feather Clan known his identity all along?"In the center of the council hall, Kaelren sat in the White Lion seat.He didn't unleash his beast spirit to intimidate the crowd. If he did, every dissenter would claim he could only rely on the royal bloodline's power to reclaim his position. The Black Wolf Duchess, Ronan's mother, had come as well. Dressed in black, she looked so calm that no one would have guessed Ronan
