It’s a short drive to downtown Parkerville. Café Rosa is a quaint, mom-and-pop establishment that has been here as long as I can remember. It’s kind of like stepping into a time portal back to old Italy. After a quick search, I find Kyle, who wasn’t hard to spot given that he is the spitting image of Ian, sitting in a booth, and I slide onto the opposite side, joining him. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he is sizing me up a bit. “What’s up, Kyle?” I didn’t even bother to ask how he knew I was meeting with his father. “Were you followed?” He asked. We both feel slightly offended. “No.” Kyle collects the folders on the seat next to him and passes them to me. “This is everything I have been able to get out of my father’s office without causing suspicion.” The waitress came over; I ordered a black coffee; she walked away, and I looked at Kyle, still trying to read his vibes as well. Kyle’s poker face is on point, but my instincts tell me he is being honest. I raised an eyebrow at him, then focused on the files, opening the top one. Kyle points to a photo paper-clipped to the inside of the folder. “This is Lenorad Luccese. He’s big time, and I believe he is the one calling the hits in LA.” Unfortunately, I know many of the names in the file, including Lenorad Luccese, who is a boss in the Italian-American mafia. He wouldn’t be killing anyone; however, he would hire a hit man or two to do his dirty work. That makes the field way uneven for my mate, and I need to make tracks back to Harley soon. My wolf or my gut has never led me wrong; I locked eyes with Kyle. “Do you think Ian is involved with the mafia, too?” “Yes, I do, and I also believe he intends to use Harley to take over the Coachmen.” This is not good; the Coachmen are an elite group of mob bosses. For obvious reasons, no one knows who the head is, but whoever controls the collective controls the entire West Coast crime syndicate. With Harley as his weapon, Ian could easily take over; I felt my jaw muscles tighten in frustration. “We can’t allow that to happen, Kyle. Ian has to be stopped.” “Agreed, and you have my full support. Though you have little reason to believe me, my only concern here is my sister.” I scrubbed my hand over my face as my nerves got the best of me. “I have already been to LA because I wanted to see for myself. You are right; Harley does not know who she is.” I paused, then thought, in for a penny, in for a pound; Kyle might as well know. “Harley is my mate, if she will have me, that is.” Kyle stared blankly at me for a long moment. “Does she know?” You mean, did we make the most passionate love I have ever experienced? YES! “I am sure she does. My wolf introduced himself.” Zeek growled at me. Kyle heard him and nodded. “I remember when Knox introduced himself to Becky. You two will always have a home in my pack if that’s what you want.” If only it were that simple. “I can’t say where our future will lead, only that I will do whatever it takes to protect her. Even if it means losing her to a mystical lake that isn’t supposed to exist. As long as we come out with Harley safe, nothing else matters much.” “You’re in love with my sister.” He stated it as a fact, not as something said or asked. There was no way I was about to explore that powder keg with anyone! I’ve not yet had sufficient time to analyze the shit out of what she was doing to me, let alone verbalize it. Instead, I stand up, close the folder, and pick it up from the table. “Do me a favor, Kyle.” His grin says it all, and he may prove to be a reliable source in the future. It wasn’t like I knew the first damn thing about wooing a woman. “What’s that?” He asked. “Give me a day or two to get back and call your sister; she won’t be on the run anymore.” I tossed a twenty onto the table and walked out. It’s about a 30-minute drive to my cabin in the woods. That is way too much time for me to devote to my thoughts. Kyle had me a little concerned about what we were about to step into. It wasn’t as simple as Zeek making chop soy of anyone who came for us, not in the human world. On my own, I will be, and I know if push came to shove, Harley would become just as much of a wolf as I. Neither of us needed to wind up on the next episode of Werewolves Exposed. Who knew how Harley would react to the Wolfman’s sudden reappearance, especially as an FBI agent. My hand is itching to dial her number because I’m desperate to hear her voice, but I know a face-to-face reunion would be best, and if she outed me, I would deserve no less. As my secluded driveway off the main road comes into view, I pull in, put the car in park, and kill the engine. ‘Harley will accept you, Nick. I’m not saying it will be easy, but you will figure it out.’ Rest is not even an option for me at this point; my head finds the headrest, and I close my eyes. ‘Do you think I am in love with her, Zeek?’ ‘I can’t say Nick because I don’t believe anyone can define love itself; it is different for each of us. More than anything, I want to be close to my mate, and I would give my life for her to never know fear again. Is that love?’ I’m still not sure, but if it was, I was ate up with the same disease my wolf got! ‘At least we agree.’ The night air has a crisp, clean scent as it fills my lungs, and I strip off my clothes. We need to run; running wild always helps clear our heads. Zeek pulled the shift, and we took off into the mountains. ‘Just what I was thinking.’Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking
Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he
Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already
Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried
Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d
Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
