My body may be in my car, hauling ass down the freeway in front of me back to Ian's pack, but my mind and the closest thing I have ever felt to a longing are behind me in LA. Never in my life have I missed a woman I'd bedded, let alone be pining away just to be close to her. Nick, the bounty hunter, doesn't know what to do with these newfound feelings, so I will do what I have done all my life and do my best to push them aside and act like they don't exist. I am also failing miserably. Zeek keeps telling me that being drawn to my mate is natural. Okay, I get that sort of thing. However, drawn to and consumed by are two different things. I'm about as lost as a nine-eyed opossum in broad daylight. No one is as stunned as I am by my possessiveness of her. I hardly know her; it was not what I had expected. My mind keeps circling back to the human man in the bar. The thought of Harley being intimate with him makes my skin crawl. Rage overtakes us both at the thought of him becoming hostile toward her. It wasn't hard to get the gist that Harley was trying to break the relationship off with him, and he wasn't happy about it. I'm also feeling guilty — imagine fucking that, another emotion I don't do well — for lying to her. Zeek pushes his way in; it's useless for me to push him back. 'You should have told her the truth, Nick, but you were too busy thinking, would your other head. You should've also stopped her and told her they are OUR mates!' 'Hey, it was mutual, and you know it! Don't you think her wolf already informed her of that, Zeek? She left us anyway because she wanted to. We had no right to hold them against their will.' 'Perhaps what we did embarrassed her. Women are fickle like that. You must not give up! They belong with us.' The word quit isn't in my vocabulary for Harley, though it looks like my row will be a long one to hoe. My common sense tells me she will not want to be mated to me once she finds out I don't have a pack. My logic tells me that once she finds out what she was born to be, she will return to the Lake and take her place as the next guardian. 'Selene wouldn't have brought us together without a way to be together. You like to fish and boat. Lake life doesn't sound too bad to me. As long as we wind up with our mates, I don't care where we wind up.' 'I got it, Zeek. It's a little harder on this side of the wolf, though. All you have to be is sweet and cuddly.' With unease, I called Ian and told him I would be there within the hour, since I knew what his plans were for my mate. The excitement in his voice made me want to let Zeek rip off his head so I could shit down his throat. Knowing that I need Ian to protect Harley isn't an easy pill to swallow. I've got to keep a handle on my anger; however, taking Ian out once I have her safe is sounding like a pretty good idea after all. There were no questions when I pulled into his pack entrance; he must have informed his front gate guards I was coming. Cocky bastard! The vermin was at his desk with his Beta Toby, whom I never cared for, guarding the office doorway. Toby stepped back, closed the door behind me, and took his position in front. Like, he could stop me if I wanted to go! I sit across the desk from Ian, whose veins are popping out of his skin — a tell that he is pissed. "It's about damn time!" Ian followed up what he'd thought were cutting words with a grunt before he opened his desk drawer, took out two thick stacks of hundreds, and slid them across the desk to me. I thumb through them with a smile at his stupidity and set them aside. "You're lucky I came at all, Ian." "You will address him as Lycan!" Toby is coming up behind me. Still, I ignored the mouthpiece. "Ian, I am not a guidance counselor. Family drama is bad for business. Not to mention, the abductee will not be easy to abduct. High-profile detectives don't just go missing." Ian fidgeted in his chair but produced a manila envelope and slid it across the desk. My new FBI badge and shield fell out onto the desk when I turned it upside down. A look inside shows me my personnel file. "I assumed it would take some time. I'm not rushing you, Nick; you will have to get her alone first. Use a stun or tranquilizer gun on her if you have to. Then you could stuff her in the trunk of your car; you have free rein in the how. Maybe even have some fun with her along the way, just don't kill her. She is of no use to me dead, and of course, I will provide for all expenses besides the 5000,000." I had wanted to believe there was at least a shred of decency or fairness in the man, and that he would reconsider. Unable to tolerate much more, I stand and extend my hand. "Deal, I will leave in the morning." Ian just sealed his fate with a handshake. I move toward the door, but Toby doesn't move aside, so I square my shoulders at him, hoping he will. His eyes go black, and I know Ian is communicating with him. He opens the door and steps aside. "Thanks, buddy." On the way out, I slapped his chest, and his wolf growled at us. Zeek pushed forward, and the two glared at each other. Ian stood up and slammed his fist onto his desktop. "That's enough! Stand down, Toby." Zeek needed a reminder that this wasn't the pace or time, and he backed up. "Don't come for me again, Toby." Before I can return to my car, my phone is buzzing in my pocket; the message reads. 'Meet me at Café Rosa in town.' It was Kyle.Harley~The universe doesn't listen, and the next thing I see before me is the most beautiful, peaceful place I could ever imagine. I somehow know that it is Sauther Lake; I am home. Not wasting another moment on the nightmare, I step into the scene, turn, and see Lauren has appeared beside me. "I am ready to come home, Lauren."Lauren turned to face me, hummed a familiar tune, and started moving her hands in unfamiliar patterns all around me. My insides heated as her movements intensified, as if she were branding something on my soul. She put the stone she'd held into my hand when she was done. "You don't have to be alone anymore, Harley." She disappeared into the mist. "Wait, I have so many questions!I'm once again alone in the darkness. "Let me go home!" Someone or something must have taken pity on me, as I find myself back in Melinda's living room, still on my knees with my face buried in my hands. The fire has gone out in more ways than one. "Did you find what you were looking
Harley~ Nick pampered me in every way he saw fit, and I was loving it. One might not put a bounty hunter and an attentive caregiver in the same category, but I sure would now. After my bubble bath, he put me to bed and snuggled close to me, wrapping me in his cocoon as if I were his butterfly about to emerge. Delighted and satisfied, I closed my eyes and drifted into a peaceful sleep; however, it didn't last long. My eyes flew open as I woke in a cold sweat after finding myself alone in the delivery room. With no Ben or Nick by my side, I clung to Nick, only breathing again when I was sure it was just a dream. My eyes filled with tears, and I closed them as tightly as possible as I begged the goddess to hear my prayer. This had to be Nick's child growing inside of me; it just has to be! 'You don't need to get yourself so worked up, Harley. It isn't good for you or our baby. We will know for sure tomorrow, but it won't matter to Nick.' 'Maybe not right away, but eventually, he
Nick~About ten minutes later, I burst through the door of her apartment to find Harley pacing the floor. Of course, I reach for her, but she backs away from me, a feeling I don't like."Sit." She gestures toward the sofa, and I take a seat."What is wrong, Amante?"With tears streaming down her cheeks, she wrings her hands and paces the floor in front of me. "I am pregnant, Nick.""That's amazing; why are you crying, Harley?""Shut up, damn it, Nick, listen to me for a minute; it's not that simple because I don't know who the baby belongs to."I have never been so high, or so low, so quickly; Harley stops in front of me as if she's waiting for her punishment, but I don't have any to give. There's no doubt in my mind that Harley loves me, and I can clearly see that she is already punishing herself enough; still, she backs away as I reach for her."There's more, Nick."What more could they possibly be? She looked at me, and it didn't matter. "Tell me whatever you like, but I've already
Harley~We arrived at the station separately and were on time for the morning briefing. As I suspected, the stalker hasn't returned to either branch, and nobody has used the debit card. A weary sigh escaped me somehow. I'm feeling neither shocked nor surprised. Captain Howard wants us back on the streets in full force, but I reminded him of my appointment. My Wolfman may not be an agent, but he is smart."I'll be out of the office sometime this afternoon as well. My SAC is expecting an update on our progress."I focused on the Captain. "Did we get anything from Peter?" "Yes, a couple of descriptions, but neither of the sketches matches our suspects. I need you both back here ASAP."Howard calls the powwow, and we all leave the SCIF room. I want a moment alone with Nick before my appointment, but I know it's not appropriate. He is in my head, before I get out of the parking lot, telling me he loves me and will wait to hear from me, and I smile as I return his sentiment.'He's worried
Harley~Nick grabs his still-packed bag from our trip to Culer City, and we head up the stairs. He has no trouble with the lock that sticks and hands me my keys after opening the door. My stomach is doing somersaults as I flip on the ceiling fan light and put the keys on the hook by the door before turning to face him."I'm sure it's not what you're used to, but it's comfortable."He tossed his bag onto the sofa and pulled me into him. "As long as you are with me, a cardboard box under a bridge would satisfy me, Amante."I'm picturing our cardboard house rocking on that bridge and feeling the impact of my dirty thoughts on my cheeks. Nick grinned at me as if he'd read my mind. Taking his hand, I led him down the hallway to my bedroom, which I instantly regretted.Nick leveled me with a cocky grin when he smelled himself coming from my bed. His eyes are searching for the source as mine focus on the pillowcase from the hotel, and I feel the heat creep up my cheeks all over again. As a d
Harley~Perhaps against his better judgment, Nick leaves me alone in the car again. It's a wonder he looks almost as good going as he does coming. The way his ass fills those jeans starts a fire as I watch him until he enters the Bodega. My soul is singing the song of his admission of love for me as I close my eyes and rest my head on the rest. Although it had been a Freudian slip on Nick's part, I knew he meant it. Beautiful pinks and yellows claim the sky as the sun sets, and a cool breeze blows off the bay. Not being able to resist, I leaned forward, turned the switch, and rolled down the windows. The pungent smell of diesel fuel from the bay also wafts through the car, silencing my soul song and snatching me back to reality; now I am fighting the door handle for release.Nick calls my name as he returns to find me leaning out of the car seat and heaving. Only the goddess knows what he's thinking, probably that he's gotten himself in a mess with me. He puts the cupholder and bag o
