Chapter 2

Author: Boredom
The receptionist scanned my badge, and that's when I saw Ethan.

He rushed over in three quick strides, keeping his voice low. "What are you doing here?"

"Reporting for my first day." I waved the folder in my hand. "I wanted to surprise you."

He pulled me into the break room, visibly annoyed. "Are you serious? Something this big and you didn't even talk to me first?"

I froze.

"We're at the same company now. Aren't you happy?"

His eyes flickered, and he let out a sigh. "I'm worried about you. Every new hire this year has a master's degree. You only have a bachelor's. Can you even survive the probation period?"

"Maybe go home and think it over."

I looked at him, not sure what I was feeling.

Just then, Diana happened to walk by, her gaze sweeping between us. "You two know each other?"

Ethan shifted half a step away. "Yeah, she's from my college."

I was about to explain, but he shot me a look, and I swallowed the words.

At lunch, my phone buzzed.

A text from Ethan: "Don't let anyone at work know we're together. It'll cause problems for me."

I stared at that line for a long time. I typed a reply, deleted it, typed again, and finally just sent back: "Okay."

That afternoon, Diana called me into her office.

She leaned back in her chair and looked me up and down. "Mia Thornton, right?"

She smiled. "I run a tight ship here. Do your work, follow instructions, and don't get any ideas."

She paused, then continued, "Otherwise, you'll leave the same way you came in."

As she spoke, she picked up the thermos from her desk and took a sip.

Black body. A little butterfly sticker on the lid.

I had put that sticker on myself last month.

So that bowl of milk this morning wasn't meant for me.

I was just the afterthought.

She bent down and hauled out a stack of files, shoving them into my arms. "These are rejected project drafts from the past few years. Take them back and get familiar with the business."

I walked back carrying that towering stack of files, my knuckles white from gripping them.

At the end of the day, Diana announced that last month their branch had ranked first company-wide in performance. Dinner was on her, at a BBQ place.

The private room at the restaurant was packed.

A female colleague pointed at the silk scarf around Diana's neck. "That scarf is gorgeous, Director Lawson. How much was it?"

Diana smoothed the scarf and smiled demurely. "Just something I picked up while traveling."

I stared at that scarf. The delicate beadwork shimmered under the lights.

It was the limited-edition Hermes Moonlit Pegasus from the receipt.

So the Chanel freebie in my hands had only ended up with me because of that scarf.

The guy next to me poured liquor into my glass. "Come on, bottoms up!"

"Sorry, I'm allergic to alcohol." I pushed the glass away.

"The new girl won't even drink the first round? That's pretty rude." The others started egging me on.

Ethan heard and turned around, frowning. "You just started. Don't be antisocial. Director Lawson is treating everyone, so don't kill the mood."

I was stunned.

Back in college, when someone had tried to hand me a drink, he'd grabbed it without a word and downed it for me.

Now he was telling me not to ruin the fun.

Diana acted as if she'd just realized. "Oh, I'm sorry, I had no idea Mia couldn't drink."

She gave me a smile. "Why don't you move over there? They're about to start a game."

I was squeezed into a corner of the table.

They started playing cards. Losers had to drink.

Round after round, Ethan and Diana kept winning.

Someone whistled. "You two are unbelievable together!"

"A match made in heaven!"

Ethan laughed and clinked glasses with Diana. He didn't look at me once the entire time.

My chest felt tight. I got up and headed for the restroom.

Rounding the corner, I heard two female colleagues talking.

"That new girl Mia? Her eyes were glued to Ethan all night."

"Everyone knows Ethan and Director Lawson are the real couple."

"Exactly. As if she could ever compete."

So in everyone's eyes, I was the one who didn't belong.

Through the half-open door, I glanced back into the room.

Diana had had too much to drink. Her head was resting on Ethan's shoulder.

He leaned down and said something to her.

She laughed and gave his arm a playful slap.

I bit down on my lip without realizing it, hard enough to draw blood.

After standing there for ten minutes, I turned and walked out of the restaurant. I flagged down a cab.

"Could you take me to Grandview Estates..."

The moment we pulled away, I changed my mind. "Actually, the nearest hotel."

Grandview Estates was Ethan's home, but there was no place for me there anymore.

My phone lit up.

A text from Ethan.

"Director Lawson had too much. I'm taking her home. Get a cab and head back. Don't wait up."

I stared at the screen. Tears pooled in my eyes, but I forced them back.

I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I knew by heart.

"Have someone get the West End apartment ready. I'm moving in."

After that, I poured everything into the company.New projects launched one after another. Partners lined up to meet with us.An industry magazine put my photo on its cover with the headline, "The Youngest Female CEO."I glanced at it, then flipped the magazine face-down on my desk.None of that mattered to me.What mattered was that what my father had entrusted to me hadn't fallen apart in my hands. On the weekend, Nathan drove me to an animal rescue shelter on the outskirts of the city. We'd co-funded the place together. He handled the permits; I handled the money.I crouched on the ground, rewrapping the bandage on a limping Shiba, my hands covered in dust.Nathan came over with a tissue, tilted my chin gently, and wiped a smudge away. The sun warmed my back.I finished tying the bandage and looked up at him."Nathan.""Hmm?""Do you think people change?"His hand paused for a moment. He thought about it."They do."I lowered my eyes. Then he added, "But someone who truly cares abou

Before long, it was time for the annual industry summit. The big screen scrolled the words: Annual Innovation Case Study, Haven Senior Care Operations Project. When the host read my name, the room went silent for a beat, then applause erupted from every direction.I stood, walked to the stage, and held the crystal trophy in my hands: the Rising Star Award.I presented Haven Senior Care's first-year operations data, walked through how the team had turned the proposal into reality step by step.At the end, I paused."This project was once taken from me."A few gasps from the audience."Not a single word was changed. Just a new cover page and someone else's name."The room fell so quiet you could hear the air conditioning vents."But I'm not up here to play the victim."I raised the trophy."This award belongs to everyone who's ever had their work stolen, their credit stripped, and still refused to give up."The applause that followed was louder than before. As I stepped off the stage, a

Three days after Ethan was fired, he sold his black Audi.He moved out of his downtown apartment and rented a run-down place in the south end of the city, barely three hundred square feet.Peeling walls, leaky pipes, windows that wouldn't close properly, rattling with every gust of wind.Ethan used to be the center of attention wherever he went, suit pressed and shoes polished. Now he crouched in front of the stove in his rental, watching a cooking video on his phone, trying to figure out how to make tomato beef stew.It was my favorite.Back in college, I'd mentioned once that the cafeteria's tomato beef stew was too salty, and wouldn't it be nice if someone made it for me.He took a photo of the finished stew and sent it to my old college email.I hadn't logged into that account in two years. He knew that. But it was the only way he had left to reach me.He sent the photo with a single line: "Added too much salt today. I'll fix it next time."The next day: "Heat was too high. Burned

The investigation team's final report came in.Black and white, line by line, airtight.I stood on the stage at the company-wide assembly. Below me, more than two hundred people filled the room."Diana Lawson. Misappropriation of company assets. Disclosure of trade secrets. Effective immediately: terminated and referred for criminal prosecution."Two uniformed officers entered through the back door and took their positions on either side of Diana. She shot to her feet. Her chair crashed backward with a sharp screech.Every eye in the room was on her. They escorted her toward the exit. As she passed me, she stopped. Her eyes burned with hatred."You win, Mia Thornton."She spat each word through gritted teeth."But don't get too smug. What are you, really? You were just born into the right family.""A woman riding on daddy's coattails has no right to judge me."A collective gasp rippled through the audience.I smiled and picked up the microphone."I've never denied where I come from.""

After the funeral, I'd lost five pounds.Just one week, but it felt like another lifetime. The car had barely turned onto the street outside the office when Nathan slowed down."He's back again."I followed his gaze.Ethan was standing at the front entrance, his suit wrinkled, no tie, stubble covering his jaw, planted next to the security booth.Nathan gripped the steering wheel. "He shows up every day. Security's chased him off multiple times. The guy's like a leech. I'll have someone remove him.""Don't.""Let him in."Nathan turned to look at me.I unbuckled my seatbelt. "Some things need to be said face to face. Dragging it out only makes it worse."By the time Ethan was brought to the reception room, I'd already been sitting inside for five minutes. The door swung open. He froze for a moment, and then his eyes instantly went red."Mia..."He rushed toward me, reaching out to touch me.I leaned back in my chair. His hand hung in the air."Sit."He bit his lip and sat down, both han

Ethan and Diana were called back to the office by an urgent phone call.An emergency board meeting, they were told.By the time they reached the conference room, the screen was already filled with profile icons.Every board member was online. No one spoke. It was the kind of silence that comes before a storm.Ethan pulled out a chair and sat down. He scanned the room, a nagging feeling settling in his gut.Diana sensed it too. She glanced at Ethan instinctively, and they exchanged a look. The video feed switched.A figure appeared in the center seat.Dressed in black, hair pulled back, face completely expressionless. It was me.I looked into the camera. My voice was level, as if I were reading a memo."Let me introduce myself.""My name is Mia Thornton. I am the current Chairwoman of Thornton Group."On screen, Ethan's hand froze in midair.Diana's mouth opened, then closed. The color drained from her face in an instant. Not a single person in the conference room made a sound.I didn't
