The button would instantly send my location and live audio of the scene to my brother.

The moment I pressed it, the car's alarm screamed—and the two who had already started to walk away, Nick Camden and Maisie Lennox, turned back as if pulled on a string.

Nick sprinted to my window and hammered the glass with his fists. "Katie, what the hell are you doing? Are you serious right now?

"It's just a little smoke. Why are you hitting an emergency button? Do you think the whole city's rescue teams exist just for you? Stop overreacting!" Maisie covered her mouth and snickered.

"Nick, don't be mad at Katie. This is all my fault," she cooed, fishing out a small black gadget the size of a matchbox and waving it triumphantly. "Last time you drove to pick me up, I bought a smoke simulator and put it in her car as a prank. See? One press and it puffs smoke. It's harmless, no smell. So fun!"

Hearing this, Nick's face darkened with even more fury.

"Did you hear her? Katie, it's fake. Maisie was playing a joke. Are you out of your mind? Or do you think everybody's supposed to orbit you twenty-four-seven, catering to you like some pampered heiress?" he snapped.

I trembled with rage. It was they who had been flirting in their car; Maisie had deliberately jerked the wheel into me.

But there was no time to argue. The smoke pouring from under the hood grew thicker by the second.

"Nick, the engine is really smoking!" I shouted, pointing at the fissure along the hood where a black cloud was already billowing out. "The door's jammed. Get it open and pull me out!"

Nick snorted coldly. "Katie, you're just jealous of Maisie. Do you really think I'd believe you now?"

I couldn't waste words. Every second of this bickering robbed me of the oxygen I had left.

Then I remembered—for emergencies, my brother had put a large spare wrench in the roadside toolbox in my trunk. I lunged for the kit.

The impact had warped the latches. I scraped and pried with my nails, bit at the seam, and finally it gave. A rush of hope shot through me as I reached in, fingers closing around the wrench—only to find it was a wrench-shaped piece of chocolate.

"Chocolate?" I whispered, stunned. My mind went blank.

Outside, Maisie clapped, thrilled.

"Wow! Katie, you found it!

"I told you—those hard, black metal things are dangerous in a girl's car. What if you bruise yourself? It's better to keep something tasty. I had someone bring this hand-crafted chocolate back from Germany specially. It's expensive, so consider yourself lucky!"

Anger blistered through me. I crushed the chocolate in my fist and screamed at her, "Who told you to touch my stuff? Are you out of your mind?!"

At once Maisie's laughter vanished; tears flooded her face. "Katie, why are you so mean? I was only trying to be nice. Boohoo…"

Nick's protector instinct snapped on. He wrapped her in his arms, soothing her in a soft voice, then turned to me and spat a string of obscenities.

"Have you no decency? Maisie gave you imported, high-end chocolate she wouldn't even let herself eat. How ungrateful can you be?"

By then, the black smoke had engulfed me completely. Heat from beneath the chassis climbed; my soles burned against the floorboard.

And then I saw flames.

"It's on fire! The car's going to explode!"

I twisted toward Nick at the window. "Nick, save me! Open the door! The car's on fire! Please! Please—"

"Are you done? Katie! For sympathy? To soften me? You even set your own car on fire?" he hissed. "You'll do anything, won't you? Look at yourself—eyes streaming, nose running from the smoke. Think that's attractive? It's disgusting!"

Breath grew razor-sharp; smoke scorched my lungs. With the last of my strength, I pounded the glass again and again, each strike a faint, desperate plea.

"Open the door… save me… please… I'm going to die…"

As the vehicle became a blackened coffin and the flames licked higher, a flicker of hesitation finally passed across Nick's face.

The day I was discharged, the sun was warm and bright.Jake came to pick me up and found me tossing every last trace of Nick into the trash."Finally let him go, huh?" he asked.I nodded, lifted my face to the brilliant sunlight, and drew a long breath of air that tasted like freedom."Jake, I want to take a walk."We didn't go home. Instead, we drove straight to the sea.I stood before the endless horizon, the waves rolling in as the wind lifted my hair, carrying away the final shadows in my heart.Yes, I had once loved the wrong man and wasted years of my youth. But because of it, I had seen the ugliness of human nature, and I had learned how to protect myself. My life would never stall because of a worthless guy.My phone rang. It was the lawyer. He told me the verdict was out: Nick and Maisie had been sentenced—fifteen years for one, twelve for the other.I ended the call calmly and slid the phone back into my pocket.Jake handed me a cup of hot cocoa. "Penny for your th

I was rushed to the hospital. After a series of examinations, the diagnosis came back: acute inhalation injury and second-degree burns. I would need to be hospitalized under close observation.Inside the ward, Jake sat peeling an apple, his expression still dark and stormy."Come on, Jake, don't be angry," I forced a faint smile. "I'm fine now, aren't I?"He set the fruit knife down and looked at me, his gaze filled with guilt and aching tenderness."This is my fault. I saw what kind of ungrateful guy Nick was long ago. I should have forced you to break it off back then.""It's not your fault." I shook my head. "I was too blind."Jake sighed. "The police interrogated Nick and Maisie overnight. They've also uncovered her background. She's just an ordinary girl from a working-class family. But her vanity runs deep. She was disciplined in school for bullying and jealousy, and she's maintained an ambiguous relationship with Nick all along. This time, she probably decided the timing w

Nick's father's eyes landed on me and flared with rage. He jabbed a finger in my direction and spat, "It's you again—always bringing us bad luck! I knew you and my Nick were never meant to be together! You caused trouble again and got Nick arrested?"Seeing his parents, Nick acted as if he'd found salvation. He shrieked, "Dad! Mom! Help me! Katie set me up. She's trying to ruin my life!"Nick's mother lunged at me, her hand raised to strike—only for Jake to clamp her wrist in a cold, iron grip."Madam," Jake said without a trace of warmth, "you'd better confirm the facts first.""Facts?" Nick's mother raged on. "The fact is, my son was ruined by that pampered heiress! How dare she treat an honest boy like that! Just because you're rich, you think you can bully people like us?"Her tirade drew murmurs from the growing crowd. Jake's lips curled in a disdainful sneer. He turned to the lead officer. "Officer Bennett, please play the recording for the boy's parents. Let them hear how

Maisie trembled so hard her sobs caught in her throat, choking off before they could escape."How do I know?" Jake's voice was ice-cold as he slowly raised his phone. On the screen was a live surveillance feed—my car's exact location and a recording playing in real time.Nick's and Maisie's venomous, mocking words echoed from the speaker, each one laced with cruelty, set against my own faint, desperate pleas. The contrast was so stark, so damning, it was like a knife through the air.Nick's face blanched, then flushed an ugly green, before turning a mottled purple. Panic consumed him.He scrambled to his feet, pointing at me with wild, shaking hands in one last frenzy of denial. "It's her! She forced me! She's a control freak! She's always using her family's power to control every part of my life! I've had enough!"He roared like a madman, spittle flying. "I love Maisie! But she wouldn't let me go! She threatened me with self-harm and suicide! She set this up! This is her trap! Sh

The guy that just arrived was tall and broad-shouldered, his sharp features resembled mine, yet every line of his face was as cold and cutting as a blade. It was my brother, Jake Woodseaves. The moment his eyes fell on me—bloodied, bound to the seat with duct tape, choking amid the smoke—his gaze turned red with fury. A murderous aura surged from him, sharp enough to freeze the air."Maisie… w-who is that?" Nick stammered, startled by the sudden intrusion. Instinctively, he shoved Maisie behind him.Her face went pale, but she quickly forced on a sweet smile. "Mister, you must have mistaken her for someone else. That's my sister, Katie. We're just playing a game with her!"Jake didn't even spare them a glance. In the blink of an eye, he drove his boot into the car door. With a deafening bang, the door Nick had only moments ago wrenched open slammed shut with crushing force, knocking him stumbling backward.Without pause, Jake yanked the warped door open again. He tore the duct t

Nick's expression shifted, but Maisie was quicker. She blurted out in a rush, "Mister, don't misunderstand! My friend is just cooking in there!"She loves excitement—keeps talking about a car kitchen. She insisted on showing off for us. But the fire got out of hand."Don't worry, this car is fireproof. She's perfectly safe inside!""Cooking?" The man stared, baffled.Nick immediately chimed in, "Yes, my girlfriend just likes to mess around. Sorry for the misunderstanding. We'll take her home now."The motorcyclist looked from me to them, suspicion clouding his eyes. In the end, he shook his head, muttered, "Young people these days really know how to play," and revved his engine, driving away.Inside, the oxygen thinned to nothing. A piercing system alarm blared: [Danger! Carbon monoxide levels critical. Oxygen below 8%. Evacuate immediately! Evacuate immediately!]The flames surged higher, and the window glass groaned and warped under the heat. Then I remembered—my brother, alw
