Chapter 4

Author: Tomato Bun
I had thought about getting an abortion the moment Anthony and the others suspected me, but the baby had done nothing wrong. I had waited five years for this child, and it didn't deserve to suffer because of what the grown-ups had done.

I received word from the paternity testing agency that non-invasive testing could only be performed once the fetus reached four months.

I remained at my parents' place during that time.

Mom cooked nutritious meals for me every day, while Dad brought the most comfortable recliner from the living room into my room. Even my little brother Henry did his part, keeping his gaming headset draped around his neck. He claimed he didn't want to disturb my rest with all his gaming.

Yet, the man I had waited for all along, the father of the child growing inside me, never showed up. He didn't even send me a single message.

It wasn't until I tripped over the doorstep and slammed my knee into the concrete that everything shifted. I cried out in pain, but that was nothing compared to the fear that washed over me when a dull ache radiated from my lower abdomen, followed by the sensation of warm blood dripping down my leg.

Mom, Dad, and Henry weren't home, so I quickly took out my phone and called Anthony. "I tripped and fell. My stomach is hurting really badly, Anthony…"

Anthony asked hurriedly, "Where are you, Madison? I'll come over right—"

Emily's voice cut in from the other end before Anthony could finish speaking. "Isn't that too much of a coincidence, Madison? You actually tripped and fell right before the paternity test? You couldn't possibly be trying to get rid of the baby now, right?

"You should keep in mind that we don't even know if that baby is yours yet, Anthony! She wouldn't be pulling these kinds of stunts if she didn't have something to hide!"

Anthony remained silent for a few seconds before saying, "You'd better call an ambulance or have your parents take you to the hospital, Madison."

It was then that the call disconnected, leaving only the dull beeping in my ear, and my phone screen faded to black, reflecting my pale, expressionless face. It held no anger, no indignation—and not even sorrow anymore. I closed my eyes, thinking to myself that Anthony was the one who drove me to this.

Thankfully, Mom and Dad made it back just in time and rushed me to the hospital.

I actually refused the suggestion when the doctor told me that the baby was in danger and urged me to stay in the hospital to try to save the pregnancy.

It wasn't long before the day of the paternity test arrived. I completed the sampling under the Johnson family's watchful eyes from beginning to end. Anthony asked why my complexion was so pale, but I never even acknowledged him with a glance.

I went straight to the hospital after leaving the testing center. The procedure to induce labor was far more painful than I had expected. The doctor noted that the fetus was over 16 weeks old and that the bones had already formed. He even told me that it was a boy.

I was crying uncontrollably by the time I left the operating table.

It was a week later when the testing center's official digital report confirmed that Anthony was the biological father of the unborn baby.

It wasn't long before Anthony called me, sounding absolutely thrilled. "The results are in—the baby is mine, Maddie! The baby is ours! The doctor said my situation made having children impossible, so this unborn baby is truly a blessing! The Johnson family won't be without an heir!"

It was exactly as I had learned from my previous consultations—spontaneous recovery of semen quality in patients with non-obstructive azoospermia was exceptionally rare—a phenomenon known in medicine as sporadic spermatogenesis—and it was typically a singular, non-repeatable occurrence.

Thus, getting pregnant this time had already been a miracle; there was no telling when—or if—it would ever happen again. That meant that the child I had been carrying would be the only child Anthony would ever have. There would be no second chance if anything were to happen to the unborn baby.

Emily clutched her cheek, glancing from Leah, who was slumped to the floor, to Anthony, who was standing nearby, shaking all over. She finally realized that she was completely done for this time. She refused to accept it, though, so she bellowed at me, "You freaking bitch! Why did you unearth these posts? I'll kill you, Madison!"Just as she was about to lunge forward, a police officer walked over and said, "You are suspected of unlawful acts, Emily Johnson, so please come to the police station with us!"Emily turned deathly pale. Her knees then buckled, causing her to fall to her knees on the floor. "I recognize my mistake now, Anthony—I truly do! I shouldn't have given you the drugs, and I shouldn't have defamed Madison! If I do time in jail, my whole life is over!"You have to help me, Anthony! You spoiled me the most since childhood! You surely won't let them put me away, right?"Anthony stood motionless, looking down at Emily, who was clutching his pant leg. His expression w

Emily instantly broke down in tears. "I-I didn't do it, Mom… You can't listen to Madison's nonsense—she's lying to you, Mom…"Anthony suddenly broke the silence, saying, "I finally get it now… I understand why I've been married for five years and still have no children. I've gone to so many doctors and taken so many medications—and all of them said I have acquired azoospermia. "I was told that it was brought on by external factors, but I couldn't for the life of me understand why. It turned out that it was you all along…"His voice was so hoarse it was barely recognizable. With bloodshot eyes, he pressed on, "It was actually my own sister who had drugged me for over half a year. You made me believe I would never be a father in my life. "You made Madison endure five years of scorn alongside me. Madison has finally gotten pregnant with my child—the only one I would ever have in my life…"He finally broke down as he reached this point. "That is my child! That's my one and only ch

Emily merely replied, "It's up to you whether you want to believe it or not, but I'm certainly telling the truth. I'm the only child my family needs, so there's no need to bring another one into the picture."I was completely shocked but also incredibly relieved when I read that part. I felt fortunate that, in her attempt to eliminate any future complications permanently, the person she drugged was Anthony, not me.Emily completely stopped posting from that account from that point on; that was until recently, when she suddenly put up a new post."My brother has been taking those drugs for more than half a year, so there's no way he could possibly father a child. That baby in that woman's belly definitely isn't my brother's. I need to seize this opportunity to get my brother to divorce her and ensure she leaves with nothing."I'm certain that as long as she's gone, our home will be peaceful again, and my brother and my mother will go back to loving only me, just like before."That

I waited until everyone had a copy before I started explaining. "I couldn't figure out before why Emily held such deep hostility toward me, even slandering my reputation, until I came across a post by chance a while back."You see, the online user has posted over 30 times over the past five years—and every single one of them is bashing her sister-in-law." Emily's expression changed drastically. She lunged over frantically to grab the papers, yelling, "You're talking nonsense! You're slandering me!"I pushed her away and asked, "Why are you so nervous? Did I ever say you were the one who posted it?"Emily finally realized she had spoken recklessly out of panic.I scoffed. "There's no need to hurry—everyone can take their time looking it over, and anyone who is illiterate can just listen to me as I read it out for you."Those who could read bowed their heads to look at the printed pages, noting that the first sheet was a screenshot of a post from five years earlier with the title,

Upon hearing that, Emily wept even more intensely, making a show of wiping away her tears with her sleeve. "Anthony is living such a tragic life! How did he end up with such a cold-blooded woman? How did the Johnson family end up with such a wretched fate?"Emily had given a very successful performance as the neighbors' discussions intensified, with even a few of them turning their accusatory gazes toward me.I broke my silence and asked, "Have you finished saying your piece?"Emily wiped away her tears, a glint of smugness flashing across her eyes. "What's the matter? Do you still want to defend yourself?"I smiled faintly and said, "You'd better start thinking about how you're going to talk your way out of this instead."I took out my phone and opened a voice recording. "Madison spends all her time dressing up and going out—there's no telling whose child that really is."I had to keep a close eye on you for Anthony's sake!"You actually tripped and fell right before the patern

Emily screamed and collapsed onto the floor, her face turning deathly pale. "W-What is this? Why is there so much blood?"It was then that a discharge record for an induced abortion surgery and a fetal identification report fell out together with the bag of flesh and blood. In the report, it was indicated that testing showed a biological parent-child relationship between the aborted fetus and Anthony's sample, supporting the conclusion that Anthony was the fetus' biological father.Emily fell back, crawling away a few steps in fear. "Y-You got rid of the baby?"Leah went completely rigid on the spot. "H-How could this happen… my grandchild…"Anthony looked down at my belly, his expression a mix of shock, anger, disbelief, and heartbreak. "I-Is that really my child?"I looked at him and nodded, replying calmly, "Yes—and the doctor even said it was a boy."Upon hearing that it was a boy, Leah rolled her eyes back and fell straight over backward. Anthony reacted quickly and caught
