Chapter 3

Author: NJ Boss
The day Vanessa came in for her interview, her performance was terrible. Leon made no effort to hide his disdain, and I didn't pay much attention to her either since both her academic background and abilities fell short.

Yet somehow, she was hired as a special exception and joined the company as an intern.

I didn't truly become alarmed until I saw the matching ring that should have belonged only to Leon and me on Vanessa's finger. At first, when I confronted Leon about it, he was still willing to patiently explain himself and soothe me with sweet words. However, little by little, all he had left for me was irritation.

My constant refusal to let go and repeated compromises only made his favoritism toward Vanessa increasingly blatant.

The menus for company dinners were all arranged according to Vanessa's tastes. She only came to work for half a day each week, spending the rest of her time wandering around with Leon. Leon even dumped all the small tasks she should have handled as an intern onto me.

He brought her up in front of me more and more often, going from casually praising her to openly comparing me to her. He said I didn't know how to be romantic, nor was I good at sweet talk.

One time during the company tea break, Leon said the milk shake he ordered tasted good. Vanessa leaned over and said she wanted to try it, so he casually handed the cup to her without even changing the straw. She then took a big sip straight from the straw he had already used.

What made my chest tighten even more was how naturally he took the cup back and continued drinking from the same straw right afterward. At that moment, a wave of bitterness left me completely breathless.

From then on, Vanessa's overstepping became relentless. She joined Leon during his skincare routine and personally applied his moisturizer and aftershave for him. When he twisted his ankle, she ignored the fact that I was standing right there and practically carried him to the medical room.

Leon even canceled the birthday celebration he had promised me just because Vanessa caught a minor cold.

Every time I voiced my frustration, Leon would say impatiently, "Audrey, your mind is filthy, so everything looks dirty to you! She's just an intern. What could possibly be going on between us? Don't project your filthy thoughts onto other people."

As time went on, he sounded less and less confident whenever he said those words.

What hurt me the most was what happened at an important industry gala. The organizers had specifically asked attendees to bring their partners, but he hid it from me and brought Vanessa instead.

I only found out after several people asked me whether Leon and I had broken up.

When I went to confront him, he was angrier than I was. "What's wrong with taking her out so she can gain some experience? Don't interns need to learn too? Can you stop being so petty?"

That time, we gave each other the silent treatment for so long that I thought our relationship had truly reached its end. But one day, he suddenly sent me a message late at night. "Sweetheart, my stomach hurts so bad."

The instant I saw the message, all my feigned indifference crumbled.

Just like that, we fell back into the same awful cycle. Whenever I confronted him, he would get angry, and whenever I gave in, things would go back to normal.

I snapped the ring box shut and tossed it into the trash can. Tucked in the very back of the drawer was an apology letter he had given me when he was 18 years old. Back then, he had written it simply because he forgot to reply to one of my messages.

At that time, he truly cared about me. Now, Vanessa was all he had eyes for.

I took out the yellowed letter, tore it apart piece by piece, and tossed the scraps into the trash can. I completely cleared away everything from nearly 20 years with him. The room instantly felt much emptier, and my heart felt hollow along with it.

At that moment, the company group chat was flooded with photos of Vanessa celebrating Leon's birthday and making him laugh. The coworkers who knew him best competed to flatter him.

"Mr. Mercer and Vanessa are so adorable together!"

"If you're looking for a girlfriend, find someone like Vanessa. She's caring and knows exactly how to make people happy. You definitely shouldn't date someone like Ms. Callahan, who's cold all day long."

"She's only an intern, but she takes such good care of Mr. Mercer. That's what real effort looks like."

I didn't bother reading any further and called my lawyer. "Pull all of my investments out of Mercer Group."

When it rained, it poured. During a routine checkup, Leon was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer. The doctor bluntly stated that long-term emotional stress, irregular eating habits, and overexertion were the main contributing factors. The illness, the company on the verge of collapse, and the endless regret that consumed him destroyed the once-proud Leon.He lay in the cold hospital room, staring up at the white ceiling as memories of us flashed through his mind.He remembered my focused expression as I built the castle model and the patience and gentleness I showed whenever he acted out. In the end, his thoughts lingered on that private room, where he had slapped me hard across the face because of Vanessa.Tears silently slid down his face. Unfortunately, he had come to his senses far too late.Mercer Group eventually collapsed. On a stormy night, it declared bankruptcy and entered liquidation. After losing the woman he loved, his health, career, and dignity, the once-prou

Driven by desperation, Leon's behavior began to spiral out of control. He flew to Eldoria to find me, but a security guard politely stopped him in the hotel lobby."I'm sorry, sir," the guard said. "Without an appointment or authorized key card access, we can't let you upstairs."Leon tried forcing his way through. "Do you know who I am? I'm Leon Mercer! I need to see Audrey Callahan! Tell her I'm here. She'll definitely see me!"The guard didn't budge. He briefly reported the situation to his manager through the earpiece. "A Mr. Mercer is insisting on seeing Ms. Callahan… Yes, understood."Afterward, he said to Leon, "Sir, Ms. Callahan has given clear instructions not to receive any unscheduled visitors. Please don't make things difficult for us."In the end, every gift and letter he sent was returned untouched.…On a rainy night, like something straight out of a soap opera, he stood outside my residence in Eldoria. "Audrey! Come out and see me! I know I was wrong! I really kn

In the days that followed, Leon sank into endless regret and searched for me frantically. He called in every favor he had to track me down. When he learned I was in Eldoria and had been meeting with the young heir of the Graves family, he grew even more desperate. He called me over and over, but all he ever got was a cold, automated response. He messaged me on WhatsApp from every number he could find, but I blocked all of them. He tried contacting my assistant in Eldoria, but the messages were stopped before they could ever reach me.Finally, after countless attempts, one of the calls unexpectedly went through. He was so worked up that his voice shook. "Audrey, it's me! Just hear me out. I know I was wrong! I really do! I've gotten rid of Vanessa, and I won't contact her again! Please come back. Let's start over—"I cut him off and said calmly, "Mr. Mercer, things between us are already over. Please stop interfering with my life."He shouted, "No! We're not over yet! Audrey, we've

The call connected quickly. Mom's voice was as steady as usual, giving nothing away. "Hello, Leon."Leon took a deep breath and tried to steady himself. "Mrs. Callahan, did you know about Audrey… withdrawing her investment and resigning?"Mom kept it brief. "I did."His heart sank deeper. "Then… where is she now? I can't get in touch with her. She seems to have… blocked me on all platforms."The last few words came out with difficulty, tinged with hurt he hadn't even realized. The line fell silent for a few seconds. When Mom spoke again, her tone remained calm, but it carried a sense of detachment he had never heard before. "Leon, Audrey has already set off for Eldoria. As for why she did it, I think you know better than anyone."He was at a loss for words. "I—"Mom's tone left no room for argument. "The marriage alliance between the Callahan family and the Mercer family ends here. Audrey will start a new life in Eldoria. I also hope you… take care of yourself."Leon panicked,

When Leon heard the female employee's words, his face darkened immediately. "Who was the 1000th person to like it?" he asked through gritted teeth."It wasn't me," she said frantically. "Audrey used my phone to like it when she came in to process her resignation just now.""Resignation? Who gave her permission to resign?" Leon asked."Ms. Callahan is one of the company's shareholders. According to the rules, she's free to decide whether to stay or leave. This… this is one of the rules you set yourself," she answered."What about her shares?" Leon asked."Ms. Callahan already withdrew her investment a few days ago," she replied."She withdrew her investment? That's impossible!" Leon snapped.A trace of uneasiness flashed across his face, but Vanessa didn't notice and kept fanning the flames. "Audrey is just trying to force you to give in. She's only playing hard to get. Leo, don't fall for it."Leon said nothing and only stared at his phone. He wanted to send me a message. Then,

The next day, I went back to the office to pack up my belongings. When I pushed open the door to my private lounge, I found Vanessa wearing a revealing short skirt with her legs propped up on my desk. Her personal items had taken over the entire room, while my things had been carelessly dumped out in the hallway.Leon had this lounge built specifically for me. Everyone in the company knew that, and no one dared to walk in without permission. What Vanessa was doing now was showing blatant disrespect toward me. I had no interest in arguing with her, so I pulled out my phone and called the police. In the mediation room, Vanessa was visibly flustered. "I was just grabbing some documents for Leo. Was it really necessary to call the police?""That is my private space. Did I give you permission to enter? Taking something without asking is stealing," I said. She didn't dare talk back, and her eyes suddenly reddened.I immediately sensed something was off. I turned around and saw Leon sta
