Chapter 3

Author: Stars
But the gossip didn't bother Tessa one bit. Instead, she showed off a closet full of designer bags and jewelry and a bank balance with more zeros than I could count.

"There's only one rule of survival in this world, and that's money. When it comes to money, who cares about your precious little pride?

"And once you have money, you don't just get your pride back. You get the power to write your own rules."

At first I thought everything she said was nonsense.

Then my father became gravely ill. Faced with a staggering surgery bill, I had no choice but to abandon the pride I had clung to and beg everyone I knew for help.

They looked at me like I was garbage on the ground. For the first time in my life, I felt true humiliation.

But Tessa lent me the money without hesitation and got me through the crisis.

Now, years later, she was still the only one I could turn to.

And I finally understood what she had meant about the rules of survival.

She led me to the couch in the living room and poured me a glass of water.

No small talk, no pleasantries. She got straight to the point. "How much did you get from the settlement?"

I pulled the dissolution agreement from my bag and handed it to her.

She squinted at the number, counting the zeros on her fingers. "One, two, three, four..."

"Ten million dollars!"

Her eyes lit up. "That much? You hit the jackpot!"

"Of course. Caleb is the Alpha, the head of the pack. His settlement was never going to be small."

But for some reason, my eyes burned and the tears wouldn't stop.

He had given me so much only to ease his own pathetic guilt.

Deep down, he knew that everything he was doing was no different from the father he despised most.

But he refused to admit it, so he used money to lie to himself.

If he gave me money and a house, then he wasn't the same kind of man his father was.

It was for his Alpha image, for his guilty conscience. Not for me.

Tessa saw me crying, stuffed a couple of tissues into my hand, and patted my shoulder.

"What are you crying for? If I got a settlement that big, I'd be laughing in my sleep.

"Men will betray you, but money won't. A cold-hearted man turned into cold hard cash. You came out ahead."

I knew she had a point.

But when I first got together with Caleb, it was never about his power or his money.

All I had ever wanted was his heart.

The thought sent a dull ache through my chest, and the tears came again.

Tessa threw her arm around me.

"Stop moping. Tonight, I'm throwing you a party to celebrate my best friend being free of that bastard and becoming a millionaire."

I shook my head. "I just gave birth. I'm too weak to drink."

Tessa's expression went blank.

"You have a baby?"

I nodded. "Born just a few days ago."

Tessa shot to her feet like a firecracker. "I take back what I said. Caleb isn't a jerk.

"He's absolute scum!

"He kicked you out right after giving birth so he could stay home with his side piece?"

Tessa was livid, ready to tear Caleb limb from limb.

After she finished venting, she calmed down.

"What are you going to do about the baby?"

I lowered my head and clutched the hem of my shirt. "I want my baby back."

"I told you to find a rich man, not the Alpha!"Everyone assumed I only wanted him for his power and status.Even Caleb believed it.But only I knew that my love for him was real.I knew the gap between us was en

I decided to leave the pack that held so much pain for me and start a new life somewhere else.I filed my transfer application at the council offices. The moment I stepped outside, I ran into the last person I wanted to see.Lila sashayed toward me in high heels, eyeing me warily."You just won't go away, will you, Nora? Didn't I tell you to stop going after Caleb?"I couldn't be bothered to argue. I turned to walk away. But Lila wasn't done. She stepped in front of me, blocking my path."I haven't settled the score for the stunt you pulled at the council offices, and now you're shamelessly stalking Caleb again."Caleb and I are about to hold our mating ceremony. You're the homewrecker now, Nora."I held up my transfer papers in front of her face."The council offices are public, not your private property. Do I need your permission to take care of my own business?"She read what I was holding and let out a long breath of relief."Good. Smart of you. Get out of this pack and stay gone,

But my mother had died of illness shortly after I was born.It was just my father and me, surviving on our own.Even so, I still carried the stigma of being illegitimate, enduring everyone's sneers and mockery.I hated my mother for destroying another family. I hated my father for being unfaithful. And I hated them both for branding me with a shameful identity. After giving the daycare staff a few quick instructions, I picked up Theo and left.I barely made it a few steps before I ran into Caleb. With Theo in my arms, I lost my balance and nearly fell. Caleb instinctively caught me by the waist and pulled me close. The scent of expensive perfume clung to him, and my stomach turned.Once I had my footing, I pulled away.He looked at Theo in my arms and frowned. "What are you doing here?""I'm taking my baby home.""Nora, who said you could decide this on your own? We agreed Theo would stay with me."He reached out to take Theo from me.I stepped back, holding Theo tight, my eyes unwaver

Behind him stood a group of visiting Alphas who had come to discuss a partnership. My heart lurched.I had cried and made a scene in Caleb's office to make Lila squirm and show the council staff what kind of person she was.I had never intended for things to blow up like this. But I had stumbled right into Caleb's meeting with the other Alphas. If my stunt jeopardized the packs' negotiations, I would have done real damage.I scrambled to my feet, brushed off the dust, and tried to slip away.I barely made it a few steps before a hand closed around my wrist.Caleb pulled me toward him and studied the mark on my face, his brow furrowed."What happened to your face?"I turned away. "It's nothing."Caleb looked up at Lila, his eyes sharp with scrutiny. He seemed to already know the answer. But I had underestimated Lila's ability to twist the truth. The instant she saw Caleb, her eyes reddened on cue. Then she broke into pitiful tears."Caleb, while you were gone, they were all bullying me.

The moment the words left my mouth, she flicked me lightly on the forehead."Are you stupid? The most important thing right now is to cut ties with that baby."I looked up at her in disbelief.Tessa explained, "The baby is the emotional tie between you and Caleb. Do you really want to keep that connection alive?"She added, "Besides, that homewrecker will probably become Luna someday. She'll do whatever it takes to make sure her own child inherits the Alpha title, and that means getting rid of yours."Do you really think you can protect this child?"I had always assumed keeping the baby with me was best for him, but I had overlooked the stigma of being labeled illegitimate for the rest of his life.Maybe giving up custody was the best choice for both of us."Tessa, can I ask you one more favor?""Shoot.""I want to sell the house Caleb transferred to my name. Can you help me find a buyer?""No problem. My mate works in real estate. He knows plenty of people."I thanked her and left.I
