Jake was not sleeping.

I woke at three AM to find his side of the bed empty.

Found him in the living room. Laptop open. Papers everywhere.

"Jake? What are you doing?"

"Working. Go back to bed."

"You have been up every night this week."

"I have a lot to catch up on."

But it was more than that. I could see it in his face. The stress. The fear.

"What is really going on?"

"Nothing. Just work."
