Emma was on the ice. Looking around. Taking it all in.

The lights. The photos. The decorations. Eight years of our life displayed.

Alex next to me. Holding his sign. Grinning.

This was it. Perfect moment. Perfect setup.

I opened my mouth to start the speech I had practiced.

My phone rang.

Unknown number. I glanced at it. Ignored it. Not answering during this.

It rang again. Immediately.

Emma noticed. "Do you need to get that?"

"No. It can wait."

Third time. Insistent.

Emma's face changed. Concerned. "Jake, maybe you should answer. It might be important."

Could not ignore it anymore. Something felt wrong.

I answered. "Hello?"

Voice on other end. Distorted. Mechanical. Anonymous.

"If you propose to Emma Reed, I will destroy you both. You have one hour to leave the rink or I release everything."

My blood went cold. "Who is this? Release what?"

Caller hung up.

I stood there. Phone in hand. Heart pounding.
