Chapter 1

"Get off the altar!"

A black leather boot kicked me hard in the chest. Before I could react, I was sent flying off the platform and crashing onto the stone floor below.

I spat out a mouthful of dark, clotted blood mixed with bits of shredded tissue. The pain was unbearable, and it wasn't just from the kick. It felt like a thousand knives were churning wildly through every part of my body.

A Rogue had slashed Drevan's back to ribbons last night. Those wounds had become mine, and now the kick made every one of them flare up.

"Oh my Goddess! Why is she so weak?"

"Told you she's a weakling. The Alpha hasn't even gone all out."

Jeers broke out around me as the crowd stared down at me with utter contempt.

Trembling, I lifted my head and squinted through blurry vision toward the raised platform where Drevan Valkor stood. He was the werewolf I'd loved for three years, and the one whose pain I'd endured in his place.

Just then, he pulled out a handkerchief with a look of disgust and wiped the toe of the boot he had just used to kick me.

"Don't stain my altar with your filthy blood!" he spat.

Drevan casually tossed the handkerchief onto my face, blocking out the last bit of my vision.

"Drevan…" My voice cracked as I pulled it away. "Today is… the mate bonding ceremony… Please complete the mark…"

I didn't care if it was just a formality or if he left immediately afterward for someone else. All I wanted was for him to complete the mark so I could survive. I stumbled forward, trying to drag myself back onto the altar.

Drevan finally glanced down at me from the platform.

"Mate bonding?"

He sounded like he'd heard the funniest joke in the world.

In one swift motion, he pulled the she-wolf beside him into his arms. She wore a fiery red dress, and her smile was mocking and triumphant.

She was my stepsister, Belle Wynter.

"Listen up," he said, raising her hand in front of the entire pack. "I, Drevan Valkor, Alpha of the Darkmoon pack, swear before the Moon Goddess that I officially reject Kyra Wynter as my mate."

The word hit me like a physical blow. I couldn't believe he had actually rejected me.

"I'm doing this for your own good, Kyra," Belle purred as she snuggled in his arms. She looked down at me with pure malice.

"Drevan is the Invincible Alpha, and his mate has to be able to fight alongside him. But you? You gasp for breath after walking just a few steps. If you actually set foot on a battlefield, he'd have to stop fighting to carry your body home."

The crowd roared with laughter.

"Ms. Belle is right. Weaklings should get out of the pack."

I dug my fingers into the dirt until my nails split and blood soaked into the soil. Only I knew the truth about how Drevan became the Invincible Alpha and why he could dominate every fight without a scratch.

It was because all the pain and bloodshed were mine to bear. I suffered in silence and bore every hidden wound while he walked away unscathed and claimed all the glory.

"No… It's not like that…"

I struggled to get up, desperate to expose this ridiculous lie.

"Drevan, you'll regret this… Without me—"

"Shut up!" Drevan cut me off impatiently. "My only regret is wasting three years with a sickly thing like you pretending to be my Luna. Get this pathetic thing out of here. Just looking at her turns my stomach."

Two burly guards rushed forward and yanked me up by the arms. The sudden tug ripped open the wounds across my back, and I screamed in agony.

The pain hit me so hard that my vision went black. It felt like I was slipping away. In the final moment before I lost consciousness, the last thing I heard was Belle's mocking voice.

"Dear, don't let a weakling like her ruin your mood. Tonight is our special night…"

I laughed bitterly at her words. I realized they were all liars, every single one of them.

I laughed so hard that my shoulders shook."Drevan, you're such a genius. You actually thought what you did in bed didn't hurt me?""What… What do you mean?" he asked.I leaned in close and savagely exposed the lie he was still clinging to.I replied, "Belle wasn't making love to you, you fool. She was clawing bloody marks into your back because she knew that every single 'mark' she left on you, every scratch, would hurt me ten times worse."You thought you protected me by sleeping around? You're wrong, Drevan. That was the most disgusting torture I've ever endured in my life. "Every time you took your pleasure with her, I was dying of pain at home. My body hurt, but my heart hurt even more. Your so-called sacrifice and protection was actually turning your pleasure with that bitch into knives cutting into my flesh.""No… No!" Drevan's last shred of hope was shattered. He'd thought his actions were safe and that only weapons could hurt me. But he never realized his desire and

"For the past two years, I've been in constant pain. It hurts when my clothes rub against my skin or when the wind blows past me," Drevan said, letting out a hysterical laugh and tapping his chest. He continued, "But somehow that made me happy, because I knew this was what you'd suffered through. We were finally experiencing the same pain together. Isn't that a shared understanding in its own way?"If you'd just come back to me, I'd be willing to endure this pain for the rest of my life. I would…"The fruit knife in my hand suddenly slipped, and the blade grazed across my fingertip.Drevan gasped and jerked violently. He lost control of his movements, convulsing so hard that he nearly toppled from his wheelchair. Now that the curse was reversed, that minor cut hit him like being slashed with a blade.Something clattered from his shirt pocket as he spasmed in pain. It rolled across the grass with a crisp sound. I froze when I saw a gold, round pocket watch. It was the birthday

Two years passed in a flash. The Darkmoon pack was wiped from existence. While working with the Moonlight pack, I became their youngest Beta and earned my reputation as the Iron Rose among the packs. As for Drevan, I heard he wasn't doing well. After losing his territory and wealth, the materialistic Belle cleaned out his remaining savings overnight and ran off with a wolf from another pack. Before she left, she even broke his leg and claimed it was payback for him being a useless burden. The former Alpha now spent his days in a secondhand wheelchair and living in an apartment in the slums. The three days after I broke the curse were hell for the Darkmoon pack.Drevan the "Invincible Alpha" had fallen. The screaming from his mansion never stopped. Even the brush of fabric against his skin made him convulse in pain. He lay there like a cripple, bare-chested and paralyzed in bed. His fractured spine refused to heal, and broken ribs pierced his organs. Healers came and went, but none could help him. This was the debt he had to pay. When one of the mighty fell, everyone else struck while they were down. That was the survival rule of the pack. The Bloodfang pack in the neighboring territory caught wind of Drevan's downfall on the second day. They subsequently launched a probing attack on the northern mining area.In the past, Drevan would have charged over alone and torn them apart. But now, he needed a heavy dosage of painkillers just to get out of bed. In the end, the northern area fell without a fight. On the third day, the southern commercial street was annexed by a

The curse had been lifted, and that bloody, twisted bond between us was broken. I could finally breathe without my lungs screaming and my heart seizing up.So this was what freedom felt like.I casually tossed the knife onto the table and said, "Drevan, it's time to repay what you owe me."The wine glass slipped from his hand and shattered on the floor. His body went rigid, as though someone had hit him with a taser. Even his once rosy complexion turned deathly white in under a second. Sweat broke out across his forehead in fat droplets. His mouth gaped open, but the pain was so intense that he couldn't even cry out."Dear, what's wrong?" Belle kept shaking his arm, completely oblivious. That final jolt from her broke him, and a bloodcurdling scream echoed throughout the banquet hall.Drean's knees buckled, and he collapsed hard onto the floor."My back… My back!"His hands scrabbled behind him, his nails tearing his tuxedo jacket to shreds. The fabric ripped apart, and ever

I opened my eyes to a familiar ceiling. Every bone in my body felt like it had been broken and reconnected. The pain was unbearable, but I was still alive, and that was all that mattered.Even though my body was wrecked, the thought of what I was going to do next gave me a surge of adrenaline that got me out of bed.I used to believe going through the mate bond with Drevan was my only way to survive. I had also convinced myself it was for his sake. But the truth was that there had always been a more ruthless and decisive way to break the Sympathetic Pain curse. If my mate sincerely rejected me, I could cut my own flesh to forcibly reverse the Sympathetic Pain curse and send all that suffering back to him tenfold.I'd always known this was possible, but I'd loved Drevan too much. The thought of causing him pain felt unbearably cruel, so I'd chosen three years of torture over letting him suffer even the slightest bit.But at the altar, Drevan had publicly crushed whatever love I ha
