Chapter 2

Author: Peachy
"A body?"

Adriano scoffed on the other end of the line.

"Chloe, I didn't think you'd get sucked into Carina's little drama."

"Drama?" Chloe's voice was sharp as a knife. "You want me to send you a picture of Leo's corpse?"

"Send it. I want to see what kind of pathetic bullshit you two cooked up."

Chloe's hand was shaking. She opened her photo gallery and found the picture.

Leo, lying on a metal table in the morgue, his face ashen, the bullet hole in his chest a shocking wound.

The photo was sent. Not ten seconds later, Adriano called back.

"Nice try," his tone was ice. "But I already had my guy at the city morgue run a check. No John Doe matching Leo’s description. No Leo Rossi. Nothing. You're lying."

I grabbed the phone.

"Carina, are you done with this act?" Adriano's patience was gone. "I'm giving you one last chance. Come home, apologize, and we'll pretend none of this ever happened."

"I want a divorce."

"Not a chance."

He hung up.

I was going home. But not to apologize. I was going to pack.

I dragged Chloe back to the estate.

Five years of marriage, and my things barely filled one suitcase.

Most of it was stuff Adriano bought me. Jewelry, designer bags, expensive gowns.

I didn't want anything that reminded me of him.

"Carina, look at this." Chloe handed me her phone.

A new post from Isabella on Instagram.

She was wearing a champagne-colored evening gown, and around her neck was a brilliant diamond necklace.

The Star of Moretti.

What was supposed to be my wedding gift.

The caption read: "He always shows up when I'm most vulnerable."

In the photo, Isabella was smiling like a princess, the diamonds glittering under the lights.

The comments were exploding.

"OMG Isabella, that necklace is gorgeous!"

"Adriano is so good to you!"

"When's the official announcement? We can't wait!"

My phone dropped onto the carpet.

"That's my necklace," my voice trembled. "When we got engaged, he said it was a family heirloom. That only the matriarch of the Moretti family could wear it."

Chloe stared at the photo, her face turning grim.

"That bitch."

The door was suddenly kicked open.

Lorenzo stormed in, his face a mask of fury.

"Chloe! Are you out of your mind?"

He pointed at the clothes scattered on the floor like an enraged beast.

"You shouldn't be encouraging Carina to do these stupid things!"

Chloe stood up, glaring back at him, refusing to back down.

"Stupid? Fighting for justice for a dead loved one is stupid?"

"Leo's not dead!" Lorenzo roared. "Don't you two have anything better to do than cook up this melodramatic bullshit?"

"We have Leo's death certificate—"

"It's fake!" Lorenzo cut her off. "Adriano had the hospital records sourced. There is no Leo Rossi. He never existed!"

I froze.

"That's impossible, we..."

"You what?" Lorenzo sneered. "You can buy a body with a little money. A good actor can play dead. You can't even get your forgeries right."

Chloe's face flushed red.

"Lorenzo, you really think—"

"What do I think?" He walked towards Chloe, his eyes filled with a humiliating contempt. "I think my wife has more sense than to get tangled in Carina's hysterics."

"I'm not!"

"Then why are you playing along with this divorce crap?" Lorenzo reached for Chloe's face. She slapped his hand away. "Because you're jealous of Isabella? Or because you feel neglected?"

"Because you're two inhuman bastards!"

Lorenzo paused, then burst into a brutish laugh.

"Inhuman? You're a pretty little vase, Chloe. Useful for decoration. But don't forget your father's business only exists because we allow it to. You're not going anywhere."

Tears welled in Chloe's eyes.

"What did you say?"

"I said you're a vase. Expensive, beautiful, but just a toy," Lorenzo said, satisfied by her wounded expression. "You better convince Carina to cool it, or I can't guarantee how long my protection will last."

I stood up and walked right up to Lorenzo.

"Are you threatening us?"

"I'm reminding you of reality."

I raised my hand and slapped him as hard as I could.

The sharp crack echoed in the room.

Lorenzo touched his cheek, a dangerous light in his eyes.

"Carina, you're both going to regret this."

"Get out."

Midnight. Chloe and I were in a safe house. Chloe raised a glass of whiskey.

"To the bastards who are about to get what they deserve."

We clinked glasses. The liquor burned my throat.

"I'm going to destroy them," I said. "Not just a divorce. Total destruction."

"How?"

"I know where every secret account is. Every illegal shipment." My voice was eerily calm. "I know where the bodies are buried, Chloe. The real ones. The kind the FBI has been trying to find for years."

Chloe's eyes lit up.

"Are you sure about this? Once you start, there's no turning back."

"Turning back?" I laughed, a sound colder than tears. "There was no turning back the moment Leo died."

I picked up my phone. My thumbs moved with cold fury.

"Grant the divorce. Nullify the marriage contracts. This is your only warning."

The message showed 'Read.'

Minutes later, a reply came:

"You think a Moretti marriage is something you can just walk away from? Carina, keep this up, and I'll chain you in the cellar and I will teach you what it means to be my wife."

Carina’s POVEveryone was waiting for my answer.Adriano knelt on the floor, holding up that sketchbook, his eyes full of desperate hope.I looked at him, and felt nothing. Not a single ripple. If anything, it was pathetic.“Put that disgusting thing away.”My voice was clear and cold, a spike of ice piercing the backstage silence.“Adriano Moretti, do you really think you can use my dead brother’s memory to buy my sympathy?”The blood drained from Adriano’s face.“No… I just wanted…”“You just wanted to remind me how Leo died at your hands.” I walked forward and snatched the sketchbook from his grip. Then, in front of everyone, I tore it apart. Page by page. The shredded paper fluttered down like snow, landing on Adriano’s shocked and broken face.“My name is Carina Morrison,” I said, staring into his shattered eyes, enunciating every word. “The Carina Moretti who loved you, the one whose brother you let die, the one who lost her child… I buried her myself. Right along with this sketc

Adriano locked down the entire hospital floor.“No one enters the twelfth floor,” he ordered his guards. “Mrs. Moretti needs her rest.”He didn’t come into my room again, but he stood at the end of the hall every day, like a stone statue. From morning till night, he didn’t eat, didn’t drink. He just stared at my door. This wasn't protection. It was a prison built from his obsessive madness. He was keeping me chained in his sight. For the next three days, he sent things to my room like a madman.Day one, a five-million-dollar ruby necklace set.Day two, the keys to a limited-edition Lamborghini.Day three, he handed me a portfolio.“Forty percent of the Moretti empire.” His voice trembled. “Carina, it’s all yours.”I took the papers, glanced at them, and tore them to pieces.“Carina!”The shreds of paper fluttered to the floor like snow.“You can’t buy back a life, Adriano,” I said, my voice dead calm. “Not Leo’s. And not our child’s.”Adriano knelt by my bed, his eyes filled with despa

“Carina, are you okay?”Isabella pushed open the door, pulling the same innocent-girl act I’d seen a thousand times.“I heard you… lost the baby.”I didn’t answer. She walked to the bed, reaching out as if to touch my forehead.“You must be so sad. But don’t worry, you’re still young. You’ll have other chances.”“Get out.”“Carina, don’t be like this.” Isabella sat on the edge of the bed. “I know you’re upset, but you can’t take it out on me.”“You’re the reason Leo is dead.”Isabella’s eyes flickered, but she quickly recovered. “What are you talking about? Leo’s death was an accident. Those men attacked you. What does that have to do with me?”“An accident?” The laugh that escaped me was sharp and cold enough to cut glass. “That hit was too clean. Too perfect. They knew our route. They knew which road had no guards. And they knew, with absolute certainty… that you had made sure Adriano was nowhere near me.”The color drained from Isabella’s face.“What… what are you saying?”Suddenly,

When I opened my eyes again, I was in a private hospital room.“Carina?”Adriano sat in a chair by the bed. His eyes were bloodshot and swollen, his face a mess of rough stubble. He looked like he’d been through hell.“The doctor said…” His voice was a raw scrape. “The doctor said you were pregnant.”“The baby…” My voice was flat. “It’s gone.”Adriano’s head dropped, his voice trembling.I turned my head to the window. The sky over Chicago was a flat, lifeless gray. My world was gray, too.“Carina…” he started again, his voice thick with self-loathing. “Leo… he’s really dead.”“And weren’t you the one who said I was acting?” I shot back, my voice cold.“I had my men check the hospital records,” he said, staring at the floor, not at me. “They found nothing. So I went myself.”He paused, as if the next words would take everything he had.“I found the guard from that night. The one who stopped you. My guy.”His voice started to shake.“He fell to his knees, Carina. Begged for my forgivene
