Sarah's pov

The office felt smaller with all four of us inside. Cain sat behind the desk while Ryder took his usual spot near the window. I stood in the middle of the room trying to look calm even though my heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my ears.

Jax closed the door and leaned against it with his arms crossed, blocking my only exit. His blue eyes studied me with an intensity that made me want to squirm but I held his gaze and refused to look away first.

"So," Jax said, breaking the silence. "Want to explain how a bartender from Portland moves like a trained operative?"

"I told you. Self defense classes after my ex got violent. The instructor was former military and he taught us how to react under pressure."

"Bullshit." His tone was pleasant but the word landed like a slap. "I've seen plenty of people with self defense training and none of them move the way you just did. That was combat reflexes, the kind that only come from real experience."

    Sarah's pov When we pulled up to the pack house Ryder helped me carry all the shopping bags inside and we were heading toward the stairs when I saw Cain walking down the main hallway. He looked like he had been waiting for us to get back and when his eyes landed on me his expression became serious."Sarah," he said as he approached. "I need to talk to you about something.
