Chapter 3

Author: Seaweed Sweetie
Finn then dropped his cutlery in front of so many people and left in a hurry, leaving behind a table full of awkward guests, including my parents.

Another unforgettable incident was after my miscarriage. I was suffering from unbearable abdominal pain due to complications from the miscarriage, and I pressed the nurse call bell. All the while, he was in another hospital room, carefully cradling his child and humming a clumsy yet so tender off-key lullaby—a tenderness I had never seen before.

He had even named the child Dylan Yeaton, a name I had chosen for my own unborn child that carried all my hopes and love.

That name was instead given to his illegitimate son, while my child did not even have a tombstone erected. It vanished from this world without a trace, as though it never existed.

Then, on the day that I was discharged, the Yeatons held a small homecoming gathering at the old residence without my knowledge.

Beaming with joy, they gathered around the baby, checking him out from all angles.

Finn had stayed by Louise and the baby’s side throughout the entire time. With a gentle gaze, he offered her water and tucked the baby in.

He would occasionally glance at me, but nothing more than to just urge me to blend into the harmonious atmosphere silently.

Though my heart had long gone numb, seeing the scene in front of me still hurt beyond words.

I turned to leave and pack my things.

While holding her baby, Louise stopped me. Gone was her soft timidity, and in its stead was the sneer belonging to the victor.

“I know you hate me and this child, but did you know?

“Dylan wasn’t conceived through IVF at all.”

At that, my steps came to a halt. My blood seemed to have frozen in that instant.

She leaned closer to me and said in a lowered voice, “It was raining cats and dogs that night. We were both drunk.

“You know how things just… happen. We were skin-to-skin, sharing a passionate night.

“There was never any artificial insemination. That was just a lie Finn made up to keep you calm and accept this accident because he was afraid of you making a scene and tarnishing the Yeatons’ reputation.”

So, that was it.

All that talk about repaying a debt of gratitude and the complex IVF procedures—they were nothing but lies!

A wave of revulsion and fury at being deceived instantly swallowed me whole. My body was trembling with rage.

Louise suddenly grabbed my hand and slapped herself hard across her face.

A crisp smack echoed in the air.

She then dropped to her knees with a loud thud right before me and instantly began wailing in a shrill and pitiful voice.

“Annalise! I’m sorry! Everything was my fault! Please, please spare me and the child!

“Take it out on me if you want to hit or scold someone—the child is innocent! This is my only child. If something happens to him, I won’t be able to go on living either…”

I was still too stunned to respond as I stared at her clumsy little performance. Finn’s furious roar came right then.

“Annalise Wright! What are you doing!”

He hauled Louise up to her feet and shielded her behind him. His glare directed at me was full of shock, disappointment, and indescribable fury.

I stared right back at him calmly. “I didn’t. It was she who…”

Smack!

My words were abruptly cut off.

A vicious slap cut me off mid-sentence, striking my face with full force.

The world went dead silent.

I looked at the man who once swore he loved me. That hideous expression on his face suddenly left me feeling utterly exhausted.

I wasn’t even sad anymore, and only a bone-deep hatred and an icy resolve remained.

“Finn Yeaton,” my voice was unnaturally calm, so calm it was unnerving.

“Let’s get a divorce.”

Finn roared in panic, “You’re threatening me with divorce again! Do you really think I can’t live without you!”

The hospital diagnosed Finn with late-stage pancreatic cancer. It was incurable, and only death awaited him. Claudia called me, begging, “I know I was wrong before, but Finn has realized his mistakes now. He doesn’t have much time left, and his only wish is to see you once more.”When I arrived at the hospital to see Finn, who once stood high and mighty, the man had now grown so thin that he was almost unrecognizable. His face was sunken and his cheekbones protruding, leaving no trace of the handsome man that he used to be. He was staring blankly at the ceiling until he heard my voice. He then turned toward me. The moment he saw me, a spark flickered in his gaze.Right after, though, he glanced at his own shriveled body and gave a self-deprecating smile. He was tugging the blanket higher over himself, not wanting to witness him in such an embarrassing state.“Annalise, thank you for still being willing to come see me. I must look terrible now, don’t I?“I honestly regret it.

“You’d better not regret this, Finn!”Clutching the crying baby, Louise hurried away. The once high-and-mighty Mr. Yeaton now sat on the ground like a child for everyone to see. From my final cold stare and Levi’s mocking with his wedding band to Louise’s venomous accusations and the baby’s piercing cries, Finn had these replaying in his head. Countless voices and visuals tore violently through his chaotic mind. With his head clutched tightly between his hands, he wept in silence. He was done for.Everything was over. …Months later, Levi slid a report across the table toward me. “The results are in,” he said in a low voice. My gaze fell on the bold title on the cover of the report: DNA Paternity Test Report.“Based on the DNA analysis, the father, Finn, and the son, Dylan, are excluded from a biological parent-child relationship.”“That must’ve been quite the surprise for him,” I said with a mocking smile. “That old lover classmate of Louise was not exactly tight

Louise’s heart lurched into her throat under Finn’s gaze, and her smile was frozen in place. “Last time…” said Finn in an eerily calm tone. “What you said to Annalise… Was it true?”…“W-what… What are you talking about, dear?”Louise’s eyes darted nervously. Her arms tightened protectively around the baby as she took a step back. Her voice trembled slightly, laced with a touch of grievance as she spoke again.“Did Annalise say something to you again? A woman like her can’t even keep a man, yet still goes around stirring up trouble…”“I asked you a question!”Finn suddenly took a step forward. His tall frame exuded an overwhelming presence, instantly engulfing Louise in his shadow.“That night with the heavy rain! We were drunk! Did you or did you not crawl into my bed?! How the hell was Dylan conceived?! Answer me!”Louise shuddered violently in fear, and the baby in her arms broke into a loud, sharp wail.“Yes, it’s true! So what?!”Her head snapped up, and her shrill voi

“It was nothing more than another disgusting lie made up by you, Mr. Yeaton. It was all just to keep me under control and to save the last shred of dignity for your family.”Right then and there, Finn’s mind went completely blank. He stood there rooted in place. The memories of that night with Louise—the drunken haze and their physical intimacy—had all come flooding back to him like water breaking through a dam. He refused to believe it.“No! Listen to me!”The words burst out of him almost instinctively. A surge of panic seized him as he desperately wanted to deny and salvage the situation.“She’s lying to you! That child really was conceived through IVF, and I swear on my honor! There’s nothing between me and her, and I would never touch a woman like her! Annalise, she’s jealous of you. She’s trying to drive us apart! You can’t believe her! Just come back to me, and we—”A soft sneer slipped through my lips, silencing his frantic excuses all at once. All I could see as I lo

Furious beyond reason, Finn snapped completely. He shoved away the people around him and stormed into the middle of the road. With arms flung wide, he blocked the white Rolls-Royce Phantom that was slowly approaching him.“Stop! Stop the car!“Annalise! Get out of the car right now!”His roar tore through the cheerful wedding music, each word seethed through clenched teeth.“Who said you could dress like this?! Who gave you the right to marry someone else?! Get out here!”The once cherished family portrait had already been thrown carelessly onto the roadside like a piece of trash. The wedding car screeched to a halt, and the air was thick with tension.Onlookers quickly gathered, whispering among themselves. Their murmurs stung at Finn’s frayed nerves like countless tiny needles. “What’s going on? Isn’t that man married with a kid? Why is he crashing someone else’s wedding?”“How shameless! He's causing such a ruckus in the middle of someone else’s wedding.”“Oh, this is g

I took the divorce papers out of my bag and handed them to Finn.“Stop dragging this out. Sign it.“Otherwise, I don’t mind letting the entire Yeaton family make tomorrow’s headlines. You wouldn’t want everyone to find out how you and your mistress teamed up to assault your wife, who recently miscarried, and forced her to accept your illegitimate child, would you?”Finn’s voice turned cold as he said, “Can you stop making a scene? Is this little thing really worth such a fuss?”I said nothing and pushed the divorce papers further toward him.Irritation surging within him as he stared at the blood at the corner of my lips and the resolve in my eyes.“Fine, Annalise! You’re really something!” he roared. He then snatched up a pen and, without even glancing at the document, scrawled his signature furiously on the dotted line.“There! I’ve signed it! Just as you wished! Now get out! Take your things and get out of the house! I want to see how far a barren, discarded woman like you c
