Chapter 114 The Heart's Memory

Author: Day Torres
Max relaxed and leaned into him, feeling the warmth of his skin and how natural it felt to be so close to him.

"Mmm… orders? What kind of orders?" she asked with a playful smile.

Liam didn't answer right away—he just lowered his gaze and gently brushed his fingers along the back of Max's neck. She shivered from the sensation, a chill running down her spine at his touch.

She was drawn to Liam, no doubt about it. She didn't even want to pull away when their bodies started brushing together in the warm water.

"Liam…" she whispered as his hands caressed her back. "Wait, I… I'm sorry. I still don't remember you."

Liam hugged her tighter and rested his forehead against hers, breathing deeply.

"I know. But that's just your brain—and that's only a small part of you," he murmured. "The heart has memory too, Max. More than you think." He traced his fingertips along the skin of her chest and slid his hands down to her hips, and Max couldn't stop the soft purring sound that escaped her

Blake felt like someone had slapped him hard across the face. He actually rubbed both hands over his cheeks just to make sure he was awake. "What did you just say?" he muttered, stunned. "Carly… what did you just say?" A long second passed in silence before she took a deep breath and shrugged. "I'm telling you to do it," she repeated. "Sleep with my sister. Get that deal, and do whatever it takes not to go under." It was like he was talking to a stranger. How could she even say that? How could she suggest something like sleeping with Charlotte? "Have you lost your mind? I didn't tell you that so you'd give me permission! I told you so you'd understand how serious this is!" Blake said, his voice rising in disbelief. "I don't want to do that, I don't want to cheat on you, I don't—" "Oh, please. It's not like it would be the first time," Carly snapped. "I mean, it's not like you didn't sleep with her before. And I remember very well you didn't ask for my permission back then."

The night was cold and dark by the time Carly reached the apartment. She was so furious, she hadn't even stopped to think whether it was smart to come here, or whether someone might guess where she'd gone. All she could think about was what Blake had said. That idiot Charlotte was back! How was that even possible? She'd thought her mother had thrown her out onto the street, left her to rot like a penniless beggar for the rest of her life. Now Blake was saying she worked for one of the wealthiest men in the country? And Blake… was it true he was broke? She needed answers. And the man who opened the door wide for her was the only person who could give them. After a few seconds of surprise, a crooked smile spread across his face. "Well, well… Didn't expect to see you here this late," he said mockingly, stepping aside to let her in. The apartment was dark, and it reeked of alcohol and expensive cigarettes. She was used to that smell by now. It was the reason she almost always

If Lawrence Dalton had slapped him across the face, it would've stunned Blake less than hearing those words come out of his mouth. What kind of twisted people were these? What kind of man let his lover throw herself at someone else like it was no big deal? For a moment, Lawrence just stared at him, disbelief in his eyes. Then he turned and walked away without a word, leaving Blake standing there, humiliated and fuming, face-to-face with Charlotte. "That wasn't a smart move, sweetheart," she said with a sigh. "But you don't need to freak out. This isn't mandatory. You don't have to sleep with me if you don't want to. I guess it just depends on your survival instinct... and what matters most to you." There was something in her eyes that made Blake shiver. But in the end, he swallowed his rage, grabbed one of the most expensive bottles from the bar, and walked out without looking back. He honestly had no idea how he made it home. Half the bottle was already gone by the time he slu

No one could even begin to imagine the impact and frustration Blake Baldwin was feeling in that moment, as he realized he was completely cornered. Never, when he started his partnership with Conrad Pierce, had he imagined it would end in such a delicate situation—but now, there was nothing he could do. "There has to be a way! There has to be another option, Gideon! I can't be ruining my life all over again because of the same deranged woman! What kind of damn karma am I paying for?!" Blake swept everything off his desk and ran his hands through his hair in frustration. He was about to start shouting obscenities when the door opened and Rory walked in. "Everything okay in here?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at the state of the room. "Wow, decided to redecorate?" "Don't be an idiot," Blake growled. "I'm in the middle of a crisis, so for once in your life, try to help instead of showing off your sarcasm!" "Okay, okay! Helping it is. What do you need?" Blake needed small bu

If Blake had been drinking anything, he would've spat it out right then and there. But all that came out were curses. "Is this some kind of sick joke, Lott—?" He cut himself off and ran a hand through his hair. "Tell me this is a damn joke. That you're not actually asking me for something that insane! How the hell do you expect me to go through that again?! To cheat on Carly again?!" Charlotte pouted and wagged a finger at him. "No, no, no, darling. I don't want you to cheat on her. Quite the opposite. I want you to tell her. I want you to get my dear sister's permission, in writing, so you can spend an entire night in my bed. And only then—after you've done exactly that—will I agree to present your little project to Lawrence." Her voice was cold. Cruel. And Blake could swear her eyes glinted with something close to pure malice. He stormed up to her and grabbed her face in one hand, lifting it toward him in a fury—only to hear the slam of two bodyguards bursting into the room

Charlotte's eyes settled on him for what felt like an eternal second—long enough to make Blake's throat go dry. He had never imagined seeing her again. But even less had he imagined that the broken, weeping girl he once left sobbing on her knees... could have become this. "I know," Charlotte said with a slight smile, as if she could hear his thoughts. "The transformation is a bit jarring." Blake instinctively took a step toward her—but immediately, two sharply dressed men blocked his path like trained bodyguards. They didn't flinch until she gave them a subtle nod. Someone else stepped in to take her empty glass, and Charlotte turned effortlessly, walking toward a private booth. Blake followed, still in a daze. "I don't remember the last time someone called me Lottie," she said, her voice cool, composed. "But just for future reference... I prefer Charlotte. Or, if you ask Lawrence—Charlie." And with that, the pieces slammed into place. Blake felt fury explode in his che
