Chapter 18 Half a Bed

Author: Day Torres
Alexia read that contract a hundred times. The conditions were clear. Even if they hadn't been, she would've signed anyway. She needed Scott if she was going to destroy Albert and Claudia and take back everything that was hers.

She signed it with a tight chest. It was the second time in her life she signed a marriage license—but the first time she knew exactly what she was getting into.

She handed the document to Daniel and then she and Scott exchanged matching glares.

"All right, just to make sure we're crystal clear on a few things," Daniel said, serious. "You cannot have children."

He looked at both of them, and Alexia answered with a smirk.

"Relax, Mr. Craig. I don't reproduce in captivity."

Scott growled under his breath, and Daniel continued, "You must convince Immigration that you're a happy, in-love couple. Alexia, just to be clear—if Scott gets deported, this whole thing goes up in smoke."

"I understand," she said quietly.

"And no falling in love."

Morrison powered on his computer and accessed the mission files. Maxine immediately recognized Travis's handwriting on the report—but there was no mention of the missiles. Not a single word about them. She grabbed a blank sheet of paper and scribbled, 'I'm sure we found them. There were fifty-two Javelins!' Beneath it, the general wrote, 'Each Javelin costs $174,000. On the black market, they go for twice that. Do the math.' Maxine clenched her fists and slammed them against the desk. This couldn't be real. 'So what? Alcott stole the missiles and sent my whole team to die because we knew about them?' she scrawled furiously. 'More like he sent them to die for 18 million dollars,' was Morrison's reply. And if Maxine hadn't been the hardened woman she was, she might've screamed right there. "This has my full attention, Lieutenant," the general said aloud as she stood up. "You can be certain I won't let this go." Maxine thanked him and left the office like the devil himself

Garrett pressed his lips together when his son told him he'd have to take over the office for the next month. "Please tell me it's for work," he muttered, and Liam just shrugged. "Half of it is. I have to inaugurate the port where the freighters will start docking in Norsethorne. But the other half... yeah, it's personal, Dad. I need to get away with Maxine and fix what's broken between us. We need time together, away from all this, to see if I can save my marriage." "Fix it?" Garrett let out a dry, ironic chuckle. "Come on, son. Are you forgetting you only married her to avoid a scandal?" "And what's your point?" Liam frowned, like he genuinely didn't get where his father was going with that. "My point is, you're already married to her! It was a marriage of convenience, just a quick cover-up for what happened. There's no reason for you to take it so seriously. Honestly, you should be out there screwing around like you always do and—" "That part of me is over, Dad," Liam cu

Izzy stormed out cursing under her breath, and Liam just squeezed Maxine's hand—grateful and relieved all at once. The interview wrapped up ten minutes later, with them thanking the journalist for "solving" their case—though in truth, Liam didn't buy for a second that some random store employee had just happened to record a private conversation between the two women. "You did it, didn't you?" Liam asked as they drove home. "You got her to confess and made sure it was recorded, right?" Maxine looked at him silently. "You were determined when you came home today. You knew exactly what was going to happen…" "She should've never lied about something like that," Maxine said. "A child is a serious matter. You don't turn it into a scandal or use it just to trap a man—because if a man doesn't want to be with you, not even a child will make him stay. And if he does stay, he'll be miserable forever." Liam nodded as they pulled into the driveway. The gate was empty now—no crowd of reporte

[Six hours earlier] Maxine looked at the document in her hand, wandered around the store a few times, and finally spotted Izzy near a rack of lingerie. "Do you think this one's cute?" Izzy asked, holding up a hanger with a black nightgown. "I think it'll be perfect for my wedding night with Liam." Maxine pressed her lips together and shook her head. "Izzy, Liam's said over and over again that he's not going to divorce me to marry you…" "Oh, he will! He will, because I'm not giving him another option!" Izzy snapped. "Didn't he marry you because it became a scandal? Then I'll make an even bigger one! I'll take it to the press, to TV, I'll sell the movie rights if I have to, but Liam Harrington is going to marry me—no matter what it takes!" Maxine bit her lip and took a deep breath. "So all of this… you're doing it just to marry him? You don't even care that he's not in love with you?" she asked, pity in her voice. "In love? Do you seriously think Liam is even capable of l

In a matter of seconds, he already had the girl's number and she was smiling at him. "And if you didn't come here to buy lingerie, what are you doing here?" she asked. "I'm escorting my boss... and trying not to miss the show." "The show?" the girl asked curiously. "Haven't you heard the scandal about the assistant who got pregnant by Liam Harrington?" Thorne said, pulling out his phone and showing her a picture of Izzy. "Well, my boss is Maxine Johnson, the wife. She came here to meet the pregnant one in secret, right here in your store." "No way," the girl said, eyes wide. "Yup. I just regret signing a confidentiality agreement for my job, or I swear I'd record them!" Thorne grumbled. "Damn! That's some hot gossip. TV stations will pay up to five grand for these kinds of exclusives! You just have to wait for the right moment to sell." The salesgirl looked around, as if trying not to seem too obvious, but then quickly excused herself. "Excuse me just a second, okay? I

Liam felt as if a red-hot hand were tearing through his chest to squeeze his heart. Maxine his wife was beside him, seemingly ready to face the storm with him... but she wasn't. The flirtatious tone he had used to hear in her voice, the laughter, their shared confidences all vanished in an instant. And he hadn't realized how much he needed her until what stood next to him was a wife by marriage contract, not his Maxine. "I can't keep doing this," he murmured one night, intercepting her on the way to the kitchen. He pressed against her, and Maxine stepped back, her back hitting the wall as she looked away. "Liam, please…" "I miss you," he said honestly. "I miss you so much, and it's the worst kind of hurt when we're under the same roof. I need you, Max. I'm sorry for everything happening. I know you have every right to be angry, but... I'm asking for forgiveness with all my heart. I didn't betray you. This was before you. So... I think I deserve a second chance, right?" "Yes
