Chapter 37 He's Not Just After Your Money Anymore

Author: Day Torres
The doctor led them to the patient's room and left them alone. Alexia stayed by Howard's bedside for hours, sometimes resting her head on the mattress, and other times, when sleep overtook her, Scott would sit beside her and let her rest on his shoulder.

It was already morning when they saw Howard stir and try to wake up. Scott ran out to get the doctor, and Alexia grabbed Howard's hand.

"Howie, I know you can hear me. Please get better soon. Please." She kissed his hand, her expression full of desperation. No one could truly understand it, but that man was the only family she'd had in the world since her accident.

The doctors arrived and asked her to leave the room. They had to run several tests now that Howard was awake, but even with all the tubes down his throat, he still managed to give Alexia a reassuring smile.

"You have to let me take you home," Scott whispered as he approached her. Knowing her, he figured she'd refuse. He turned her gently and cupped her face in his ha

With a low growl, Liam scooped Maxine up into his arms, pressing her tightly against him as he deepened the kiss. She could feel his arousal growing hard against her stomach as their mouths moved together, their tongues dancing between lust and restraint. When they finally pulled apart with a satisfied sigh, they looked at each other for a long second, and he smiled. "Want me to bring you something for a headache?" he asked sweetly. "But I don't have a headache…" "Then you already know what I'm going to do to you tonight! I want wild sex!" "But—" "Wild sex, I said!" Liam declared, and she burst out laughing as she kissed him again. The rest of the night was a whirlwind. Maxine handled collecting donation checks, but she didn't take her eyes off Liam. Most of the time, his father or Alex was with him—but if Maxine had expected trouble to come from one of Garrett's enemies, she was about to be surprised by a very different kind of threat. She'd seen that woman circling ar

  • Bride of the Billionaire Beast   Chapter 28 A Gala

If there was one thing Maxine Johnson had in abundance, it was the desire to help others. In the sea of lies she swam in to keep her cover story straight with Liam, there were still plenty of truths—and the fact that she'd grown up in an orphanage was one of them. Unfortunately, for people raised in orphanages, life usually went one of two ways: detachment or responsibility. Maxine had chosen the latter. Growing up without parents was tough, but she'd had good people around her to help her stay on track. That was why giving back felt like the right thing to do. The following week was hectic. Maxine swapped her high heels for low-heeled boots, and Liam was annoyed because even then, his executives couldn't stop drooling over her. They threw themselves into organizing the charity gala before the first cargo ship set sail, and Liam was genuinely surprised to see that Maxine had the organizational power of a general at war. Wherever she moved, people scrambled to follow orders. Fin

"No, wait, I like my little nameplate!" Maxine cut him off before he could toss it in the trash. "Fine, you can keep the nameplate, but we're taking off the 'Assistant' part… and getting you an assistant! Someone else can go fetch coffee! You shouldn't be doing that in your condition!" Liam growled. "What condition?" Garrett asked, alarmed. "She had pneumonia!" Liam shot back. "She got pneumonia because she fell into the ocean—after getting hit by a fishing cage that was coming straight at me, and she pushed me out of the way!" "It wasn't that big a deal…" "Not that big a deal?" Liam retorted, lifting her shirt up over her stomach. Garrett winced at the sight of the bruises, and Maxine smacked Liam on the back of the head. "Idiot! Your father doesn't need to see me half-naked!" she snapped, but when she looked back at Garrett, there was nothing in his eyes but quiet, sincere gratitude. "I'm grabbing my bag and we're leaving," Liam declared, and as soon as they were alon

Maxine was more worried than she let on. As she drove to the house, she was trying to figure out how much strength she'd regained after being stuck in bed for days with an illness. Her muscles still ached, but adrenaline was pumping through her, and that definitely helped. She left the car outside the property and tracked the spot where the silent alarm had been triggered. She drew her gun and entered the house, noticing the barely visible signs of a forced lock on the laundry room door. She moved quietly, checking each room, until the moment she stepped into one and felt a blow come down on her arms from above, knocking the gun from her hands. A hand clamped down on the back of her neck was too big to be a woman's. The force that slammed her into the wall confirmed it was a man. Maxine froze completely, focusing on what she could see and hear. Something gleamed above her, and she quickly recognized it as a knife. She stomped hard and drove her elbow into the groin behind her, th

That night, Liam moved from the chair to the bed. Maxine didn't have a fever, so he hugged her under the blankets and slept beside her more peacefully than he had in months. The next day, Maxine was more energetic, and two days later, Liam returned from one of his meetings with Captain Webster to find her dressed and ready to go out. "No no no…" "Yes yes yes," the doctor said before Liam could protest any further. "She can't stay in bed forever. Today there's sun, and she needs it, so you two should go out." Liam gave in since it was the doctor's recommendation, and they spent a while walking through the little town. It wasn't long before they came upon a historical site, and the plaque out front read: House Estrellan. It was a beautiful ruin of what had once been a palace in 1570, and Liam and Maxine wandered through it, reading the history on each of the signs. For Liam, it was just another old monument, but something in those ruins caught Maxine's attention—enough for he

Maxine smiled softly, as if she couldn't believe that Liam Harrington, the playboy himself, was asking her for something like that. "Are you saying all the kisses I've given you so far have been fake?" she laughed. "Well... I don't know," he replied. "I guess I'll know when you give me a real one." Maxine shook her head in mock condescension, and if she'd had the strength to be surprised, she would've jumped when Liam leaned in... and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Rest," he said. "I'll be right here taking care of you." The truth was Maxine had no idea if Liam was actually capable of taking care of another human being, but she was so exhausted and sore that she had no choice but to close her eyes. The following days were peaceful, though far from comfortable. Once the people in the tiny village learned Liam would be injecting two million dollars into the local economy and creating jobs, they made sure to help him even more. Liam took care of all the licensing paperwork w
