Chapter 43 A More Than Ready Task Force

Author: Day Torres
"You're not the brains of this operation!" Gunther shouted, his voice shrill and desperate, the tone of a man trying to assert control he didn't really have. "You're just a damn pawn, whether you believe it or not!"

"Shut up!" came the furious reply—and Scott immediately recognized the voice of Garrick, or whatever his real name was.

"Why? You don't even know what you're doing!" Gunther snapped back.

"I do know what I'm doing! I've been planning this for years!"

"Oh really? Did you plan this kidnapping too?" Gunther spat. "Should I remind you we had to resort to this because your big plan went to hell?"

"This bitch ruined everything!" Garrick roared. The one thing he couldn't tolerate was being blamed. "Everything was going fine until I made the mistake of hiring her!"

"Then it's still your fault for hiring the wrong person," Gunther said coldly. "Now do what I say or you'll be the one who pays the price, not me!"

"Don't you threaten me, moron! We've got the money already

  • Bride of the Billionaire Beast   Chapter 25 A Real Kiss

That night, Liam moved from the chair to the bed. Maxine didn't have a fever, so he hugged her under the blankets and slept beside her more peacefully than he had in months. The next day, Maxine was more energetic, and two days later, Liam returned from one of his meetings with Captain Webster to find her dressed and ready to go out. "No no no…" "Yes yes yes," the doctor said before Liam could protest any further. "She can't stay in bed forever. Today there's sun, and she needs it, so you two should go out." Liam gave in since it was the doctor's recommendation, and they spent a while walking through the little town. It wasn't long before they came upon a historical site, and the plaque out front read: House Estrellan. It was a beautiful ruin of what had once been a palace in 1570, and Liam and Maxine wandered through it, reading the history on each of the signs. For Liam, it was just another old monument, but something in those ruins caught Maxine's attention—enough for he

Maxine smiled softly, as if she couldn't believe that Liam Harrington, the playboy himself, was asking her for something like that. "Are you saying all the kisses I've given you so far have been fake?" she laughed. "Well... I don't know," he replied. "I guess I'll know when you give me a real one." Maxine shook her head in mock condescension, and if she'd had the strength to be surprised, she would've jumped when Liam leaned in... and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Rest," he said. "I'll be right here taking care of you." The truth was Maxine had no idea if Liam was actually capable of taking care of another human being, but she was so exhausted and sore that she had no choice but to close her eyes. The following days were peaceful, though far from comfortable. Once the people in the tiny village learned Liam would be injecting two million dollars into the local economy and creating jobs, they made sure to help him even more. Liam took care of all the licensing paperwork w

Liam nodded and lay down next to her on the bed, holding her close as much as he could without hurting her. He didn't feel her react until a couple of hours later, when, besides opening her eyes, her stomach growled like a little hungry lioness. "Hello, gorgeous." Maxine opened her eyes. "Oh God, I must be dead," she murmured, and Liam leaned on one elbow to sit up beside her. "You're not dead, but almost. You gave me the worst scare of my life, and I swear if you do it again, I'm going to punish you like you've never been punished before." Maxine smiled weakly, realizing he was fine because he had the energy to threaten her. "Oh? What kind of punishment? Sexual?" "Max..." "Punish me then. Spank me, flog me, bite me..." "The doctor is on the other side." "Aaaahaah!" Maxine cried out, turning over and spotting the doctor sitting on a chair. "Oh my God, how embarrassing! I'm so sorry! So, so sorry!" The doctor laughed and stood up. "Since Mrs. Harrington feels wel

"Max!!!" Liam didn't run to the railing. That's what anyone else might have done—but with the ship moving at full speed, he sprinted straight to the stern and launched himself off the side, away from the churning vortex of the propellers. He saw it for only a second—the swirling circle of foam where Maxine had fallen—and aimed to hit as close as possible. The moment his body hit the water, it felt like a thousand needles pierced his skin. The temperature had to be seven or eight degrees. For a long second, the shock paralyzed him, but survival instinct kicked in hard. He kicked toward the surface and scanned the waves for the spot where the cage was still floating. He swam toward it and dove under as the boat began to maneuver around and the sailors lowered the small rescue skiff. Liam searched desperately, but the water was dark and frigid, the salt stinging his eyes like crystals. His muscles were quickly losing strength, and his mind started going foggy—but he wasn't givin

The kind old man gave them his best room and jotted down their dinner order. Liam collapsed onto the bed like a plow ox, and Maxine stopped the innkeeper just before he walked away. "Do you know if there's any big-vessel captain on the island?" she asked. "Of course! Local pride—Kendrick Webster!" The old man chatted cheerfully with Maxine, and within minutes, she already had a way to contact Captain Webster. As soon as they were alone, Liam peeled off his coat and headed to the bathroom. "Maaaaaxxxxxx!" he shouted, and she came running in with a broom. "Alright, where's the cockroach I need to kill?" she asked. Liam just shook his head, still wondering where the hell she got a broom that fast. "You brought us to the gates of hell," he said, pointing at what looked like a gaping black hole nearly two meters wide in the middle of the bathroom. "That's the bathtub, you idiot!" she snapped. "With this cold, the water must be boiling, thank God. So fill it up, I'm diving in

Not even three hours had passed before they were already arriving at the airport. For Maxine, getting on a plane was nothing new—but boarding a private jet this luxurious? That was rare. She felt a little out of place, especially when she saw that the executive jet even had a bedroom with a full bed. The flight was long, but Maxine's curiosity about all of Liam's work outside the company kept her from staying quiet. She asked him everything: where the donations came from, where they were sent, how he bought them, how he ensured they reached their destinations, what types of supplies were included… The list was endless—and Liam answered every question enthusiastically, because it was a part of his work that truly mattered to him. "Wow… that's a lot of money," Maxine murmured, realizing Liam had been running this system in different parts of the world for years. "If you hadn't donated all that, you could've bought yourself a small country by now." "And what would I do with a smal
