Chapter 5 A Game Too Dangerous

Penulis: Day Torres
Scott narrowed his eyes. He wanted to strangle that woman with his bare hands, but he wasn't a stupid man.

"Put the documents on my desk. Tell Garrick to wait," he ordered, and a moment later, he was alone.

Scott inhaled slowly to calm himself and sat down. He picked up his favorite pen and opened the folder. He'd seen this contract before. He'd skimmed the numbers and hadn't spotted anything wrong. But the handwritten notes in neat, feminine script told a very different story.

He leaned forward, going over the data again and again. The numbers didn't lie. She had caught a small discrepancy—one that could cost him millions over the next three years.

"Shit. The witch was right," he hissed. And that also meant something else: Garrick had tried to deceive him. He buzzed him in, and the moment Garrick stepped through the door, Scott pounced.

"Why the hell did you try to hide this from me?!"

Garrick turned as pale as a sheet.

"I… I didn't… She submitted a sloppy report, sir, and I didn't want to bother you with that garbage!" Garrick stammered.

"Don't insult my intelligence!" Scott roared. "The report is perfect! I just reviewed it—and it's clearly a scam!"

He slammed the folder down on his desk.

"So explain this to me: did you not see the fraud? Or did you try to cover it up after she pointed it out?"

Garrick looked like he was about to faint.

"She's just some arrogant little upstart… a disrespectful—!"

"I don't give a damn what she is!" Scott snapped. "That doesn't change the fact that she tried to save me from a scam while you were ready to let me walk right into it! The only slightly less disgusting option is that you tried to push her out of the way so you could take the credit. And even that's pathetic. So tell me—how do I save you?"

Scott was vibrating with rage. Garrick was trembling in fear.

"I've worked for this company for years… I've always been loyal… but sometimes people get influenced, they make mistakes…"

"You're fired," Scott said coldly, cutting him off.

Garrick clutched his chest, wincing in pain. Scott buttoned his jacket, grabbed the folder, and stepped past him.

"Pack your things and get out. And if you're going to drop dead, do it outside—I don't want cops in my building."

He left his office and paused briefly at his assistant's desk.

"I need everything on the witch who brought me this report. You've got ten minutes."

And sure enough, ten minutes later, Scott had Alexia Hartley's personnel file in his hands. It wasn't long, but it was definitely interesting.

'Twenty-three years old. Single. Allergic to nuts. No criminal record… yet,' he thought, smirking.

"Graduated in Economics, master's in Risk Analysis from… Harvard. Well, no wonder she's sharp. Someone explain where the hell she learned to be so mouthy, though," he muttered to himself.

Still, the fact that she was a genius with numbers didn't erase the bigger issue: that woman liked to challenge him. She'd already done it twice. And Scott Hamilton was not a man who tolerated being challenged.

He knew himself well—he was impatient, temperamental. But if he was a bomb, she had a gift for setting him off every single time.

He took the elevator to the office they said was hers and barged in without knocking.

"Jesus Christ!" Alexia yelped—and Scott's throat went dry when he saw her half-dressed.

She looked like sin in human form, and for a second, he actually felt pain in his pants. How the hell could he want to strangle her and screw her at the same time?

Before he could spiral any further, her sharp voice yanked him back to reality.

"Ever heard of knocking before you enter your employees' offices?"

"I'm just returning the favor from earlier," he shot back, his eyes sweeping over her with zero shame. "No one told you the office isn't for stripteases?"

Alexia gave him a biting glare.

"I'm changing because my boss said I smelled like a cow-milker," she said with a mocking smile. "But a striptease? Keep dreaming, pretty boy."

In two quick strides, Scott closed the space between them. His hand clamped firmly around her cheeks, making her go silent, her pupils blown wide as he leaned dangerously close to her lips.

There it was again—that mouth. That infuriating mouth.

Scott hovered there with a low growl of satisfaction.

"This is harassment…" Alexia murmured.

"Your report was accurate," Scott whispered, feeling her body tremble against his. "And trust me, you don't even know what harassment looks like yet."

He stepped back slightly, his voice firm.

"Garrick's fired. First thing tomorrow, you report to my office… because I'm going to show you exactly how this pretty boy plays, Miss Hartley."

Alexia swallowed hard. Scott was loud, arrogant, and dramatic—but the few times he'd hissed at her through gritted teeth, it made her knees shake. He was really angry, but Alexia was too blind to see that his threats didn't come from arrogance… but jealousy. Or maybe, she just didn't want to see it. She threw herself into work. Later, she'd have to have a serious talk with Howard about everything he'd said. She couldn't afford for him to be airing her business to anyone. Her thoughts drifted back to the day she met him. Faking your own death wasn't easy. A year ago, that Ferrari had lost its brakes, and no matter how slow it had been going, it was still going to crash. She'd jumped before the car went over the edge, but she hadn't accounted for landing on rough terrain. The impact had slammed her into a dry, gnarled tree stump. One of the roots pierced her stomach, leaving a long, brutal scar. Howard had found her minutes later—thank God he was a doctor. He saved her life and was

Half an hour later, Alexia finally got up, finished her shower, and sat on the edge of the bed, overcome by a deep unease. The room was so quiet, so still, it felt like the world had frozen. She knew this wasn't about Albert or Claudia—they didn't even know she was still alive. But danger was clearly still around her. Her eyes filled with tears just as Scott entered the room. He saw her sitting there with a somber expression and hesitated, then walked over and sat beside her, slipping an arm gently around her shoulders. "You okay?" he asked softly, his eyes filled with concern. "You look... shaken." "It's just been a crazy day," Alexia sighed, her body tensing automatically—he let go of her right away. "Should I send Beast in? Or... do you want me to stay?" he offered. She pressed her lips together, not wanting to admit she was scared—but he got it. "I'll send Beast." But even if she drove him crazy, he couldn't leave her alone. Not after everything that had happened. He wa

Alexia felt the world spin the moment she heard those words. It was like reliving everything from a year ago—the accident, the explosion, the pain. She thought she might faint, but Scott caught her, holding her steady as she tried to process the terrifying truth. "But it can't be…" she whispered, her breath shaky. "My SUV wasn't in that lot. How…?" "You parked it wrong, a tow truck took it. They called me to notify the emergency contact—that's how I found you at the bar," Scott explained, feeling her trembling despite her effort to keep it together. She was a brave woman, but something like this would shake anyone. And truth be told, he was scared too. "This is a nightmare…" Alexia murmured. "The authorities are investigating, of course," Scott said. "But there's not going to be much doubt it was your vehicle that exploded, and that a man died because of it. I've got a couple of contacts in the department…" He hesitated, but her questioning eyes pushed him to go on. "What's

The next five hours were filled with laughs, complaints, stories, and jokes between them. Howard was the only real friend Alexia had kept since leaving behind the name Alexandra Kingsley. "Do you think it's true?" Alexia asked, slurring slightly after a dozen martinis had kicked in. "What if I am actually bad in bed? I've only had one boyfriend in my life. I don't even know if I'm a good kisser!" Howard burst out laughing. "Are you kidding? I bet you kiss amazingly well, seriously," he said, before realizing what he'd just said. "I mean… I think so. I'm a doctor, after all—I know things." Alexia raised an eyebrow, took another sip of her martini, then turned in her barstool to face him. Her eyes sparkled, carefree and bold. "What if I'm the only woman in the world who got hired for her talent and not because she's good at screwing the boss?" she teased, and Howard laughed even harder."Well, that's nothing we can't test!" he declared, pulling her closer before leaning in for

Scott took a deep breath, trying to assess the situation calmly. For starters, he wasn't really in a relationship with Alexia. Secondly, it was Friday night and the cook had the night off, meaning there were no staff around who could report he had a lover in the house—especially not to immigration, which was the only thing that actually worried him. The crazy woman wasn't truly his wife, so he didn't owe her any explanations. And she seemed smart enough to step aside when needed. So, he turned to Violet and took a breath. "Who was that, Scott?" Violet asked. "Nothing for you to worry about," he replied smoothly. "She's not important. Come on in—tonight's going to be long and... interesting." They headed into the mansion, and Scott led her to the terrace before ordering dinner from one of his favorite restaurants. He decided he might as well enjoy the evening—and Violet clearly agreed, because within minutes, she was on his lap, kissing him deeply while slowly undoing his shirt.

Scott rolled his eyes immediately."He said sleep, not have sex, don't be so dramatic," he snapped, annoyed at her rejection. Though truth be told, he liked that her mind went there. "Exactly. Just share the room in case anyone checks. Build a wall of pillows. Better yet, let Beast sleep between you," Daniel added."What else?" Alexia asked warily."I know it's a stretch, but try to look in love. Come up with pet names for each other instead of using your actual names. And I hope you won't have trouble following these rules, because if you even think about breaking one, I swear I'll deport you myself, Hamilton," Daniel warned, dead serious."No adjustment period?" Alexia asked."Absolutely not," Daniel replied firmly. "Starting tonight, I want you two sleeping in the same bed. And if you're smart, make some noise, shake the bed or something—give the staff something to believe you're actually newlyweds!"Alexia and Scott exchanged awkward looks, then sighed and nodded."After a
