Chapter 51 A Mirage and a Bad Feeling

ผู้เขียน: Day Torres
Now that the train was free of cargo, it moved much faster on the way back. In just eighteen hours, they'd cover the ground that had taken a full week, so they'd be back in Novenhrad soon.

"Can I tell you something?" Max said, and Liam nodded.

"Of course."

"I thought you were more... delicate."

"Excuse me?" Liam pretended to be offended, but she kissed him on the lips.

"It's been a tough week—no luxuries at all—and you haven't complained once."

"Well, I don't really have the right to," he replied. "The people we helped live like this all year round. I'd have to be a real jerk not to handle it for one week. Though, if I'm being honest, this body of mine does need a warm bed."

"Well... I owe you the bed, but I can definitely provide the 'warm' part," Max said, unzipping his fly and stroking him until she felt him harden in her hand.

She climbed on top of him, their mouths crashing together in a desperate kiss, and Liam could feel her wetness pressing against his length.

The general frowned, looking puzzled. "What are you talking about, Lieutenant?" "Murray's son. The reason this is all happening to the Harringtons... the guy was a soldier!" Max told him urgently. "I think this whole event has been orchestrated to hurt Liam—maybe you and Garrett too, all in one place." "Well, that's not going to be so easy, because I'd never show up without my security deta—" He didn't finish the sentence. At that exact moment, an explosion rocked the main entrance. A pair of bodies flew into the grand hall, carried by a wave of shattered drywall, paint, and sand as the front doors were blown to pieces. Max didn't hesitate. While the crowd instinctively ducked for cover, she launched herself toward Liam and tackled him to the ground, making him fall flat on his back. The first shot whizzed right past them, and Max grabbed Liam by the shoulders. "Come on, come on—move! Let's go!" They crawled frantically toward the nearest wall—Max with clear purpose

The trip back was relatively quiet. Both of them were exhausted, so they spent most of the time sleeping. But as soon as they landed in Novaria, Max shook off every last bit of that laziness—and the first thing she did was start digging for information. "This could be an ambush!" she said the next day, slamming a stack of documents down in front of Garrett Harrington. They'd gone to the office, and while Liam was working, she took the opportunity to speak with his father. "Don't be ridiculous. It's just a damn award." "This NGO was founded less than a year ago. It's not trustworthy. Maybe the award is just a ploy to lure you and Liam in..." Max tried to reason with him. "They already told me that," Garrett grunted. "They're small, yeah—but the whole point of the award is to attract important people who could turn into donors." "Well, something about it feels off to me. And I've learned to trust my gut. I don't want Liam going to that event—I don't think it's safe." "What yo

Max had spent plenty of nights out in the open, sheltered only by the flimsy safety of a trench—on grass, sand, and sometimes in the middle of a mud pit during a torrential downpour. But being there, wrapped up in the middle of the night with Liam, nothing above them but the sky, felt so sweet it could only bring peace. "You know there's an entire dungeon system under these ruins?" she murmured. Liam smiled, because she was always thinking about something impressive. "Really? Where'd you read that?" he asked. "I didn't read it anywhere. I found them," Max grinned. "These old castles used to build their dungeons underground. I think they made the first bunkers without even knowing it." "You've been exploring the island?" "A little," she murmured. "I'm curious, and this island's a bit like me—dry." "And beautiful," he added, making her smile. "I think it's the perfect place to escape," Max admitted. "If I ever wanted to disappear from the world, I think this would be the

"Max! Max! Dammit, where are you going?" Liam shouted, catching up to her. "I'm going back to the inn!" "Through the middle of the damn field?" Liam yelled. "It's not a field—it's just the stupid palace ruins! I'm leaving! I'm tired!" she snapped. "The event's not even over!" "I don't care!" "Damn it, Max! You're gonna drive me crazy—you're not like this! What's going on with you?" he demanded, watching her fists clench. "I don't know!" she cried out, chest heaving. "I don't know! I'm angry, I'm frustrated, I'm…! Damn it, I don't know! I feel like I don't even fit inside my own skin, like I'm going to explode any second now!" Her breathing became shallow, erratic. Liam pulled her into his arms and crashed his mouth onto hers in one swift move. He kissed her there in the darkness, pressing her back against one of the ancient stone walls. His lips devoured hers hungrily, his hands roaming her body as he growled with need. He could feel her trembling under him and pressed

Liam was furious. In the end, Maxine had managed to turn things in their favor, but the billionaire was very aware that if she hadn't been by his side, the entire freighter operation might've fallen apart—and the donation would've been impossible. "All my treasures are good ones, Cassian," Liam replied coldly. "But none of them came thanks to you. Actually, I should probably thank you for making the road so damn difficult—because in the end, Maxine was the one who found the perfect solution for us." "The assistant?" Caroline Wolf scoffed with a sneer. She had taken it pretty personally when Liam blew her off for some second-rate secretary… at least until she found out the woman was much more than that—his wife. Still, if she was being honest, that didn't change much. She despised her all the same. "Well, funny thing," Liam said sharply. "'The assistant' has a sharp mind. So we owe all of this to her." "Oh, please, darling! She found a port. Bravo! What a feat!" Caroline said
