Lyra

“I’m going to pass out,” I tell Cally. “I can’t do this. Is this like… a date? Why would the Queen Mother ask for a special dinner with the Alpha King present?”

I stare into the mirror, trying to focus on the delicate lace of the emerald-green gown I’ve chosen, but it’s not helping. My heart is racing so fast, I feel like I’m going to throw up.

She smiles at me in my reflection, far too calmly, twisting my hair high in the air so she can wrap it around in an updo. “You’ve done hundreds of these dinners, Lyra.”

I raise my brow at her. “You’re kidding, right?” She’s not exactly the type to remain calm at a time like this.

She drops my hair, joining me on the vanity bench and scooting close, her eyes bright with excitement. “Of course I am. If I were having a dinner date with an Alpha King—especially one who looks like him—I’d die right here, right now.”

There’s my Cally.

“Thanks for your support,” I say.

But I can’t even be sarcastic now without laughing. We both giggle, and it hel

Maggie“Kaya, breathe,” I tell her.I think she might be hyperventilating, but there’s no reason for that. I’ve just finished styling her hair into beach waves that flow all the way down her back, and she’s got the perfect amount of makeup on, a natural look since she’s already so pretty, she doesn’t really need makeup at all. It’s just enough to highlight her features a little. “I keep forgetting to!” she complains. “Oh, my Goddess. What if he doesn’t like me?!”“He’s going to love you,” I assure her, patting her shoulder.Honestly, I’m almost as nervous as she is, but it’s not because I’m worried that he won’t like her. She’s the sweetest, nicest girl I’ve ever met, so of course he’s going to adore her forever. Well, I suppose I have to call her a woman now, not a girl. She’s eighteen now and has a mate, after all.Oh, I can’t wait for their royal wedding! Goddess, what will I wear?We both hear the pattering of horse hooves approaching at the same time, followed by the unmistakab

Part 3: Prequel: Maggie of BellthanMaggie“Are you sure you’re mates?” I prop my head up by resting my hands on my chin on my best friend’s bed and gaze at her, probably with dreamy stars in my eyes. How could she be so lucky?Kaya nods, her eyes gleaming about least half as sparkly as mine would be if I were mated to the Crown Prince of Forest Kingdom. “Yes!” she squeals.“Tell me everything.” This requires my undivided attention, so I sit straight up and lean against the bed post while she paces around explains things to me, completely unable to contain her excitement.I’m excited for her too. How amazing! We’ve known each other as long as we’ve been alive. Her parents own the farm just next door to my parents’ land, and our houses were developed really closely together, thankfully. It gives me the chance to pop over here and visit whenever I’m not helping Mother or Father or one of my brothers. She’s two years older than me at eighteen, so she’s old enough to know her true mate an

LyraThree Months Later“I’ll get her.”Cassian pulls the sheets away, following the baby’s cries into the nursery. I push myself up, propping the pillows around me to get into a good position for breastfeeding. In seconds, he’s back with our precious daughter, settling her into my arms for her feeding.Being a mother is so different than my life before, even when I was pregnant. Now that she’s here, an entirely new world has opened for us.I’ve loved her since the moment I knew I was pregnant, but nothing compares to having this little treasure here in my arms. In the early morning light that filters through the curtains, I can see the red glimmer in her hair. It’s kind of a combination of Cassian’s bright white and my strawberry blonde, and in the sun, it glistens like gold. Her eyes are closed now as she drinks hungrily, but I’ll never forget the moment I first glimpsed at those silver eyes. They’re so close to Cassian’s, but our little girl has her own unique look.Along with thos

Cassian‘My water broke.’Lyra’s words in our private mind-link have me tearing out of the meeting room without a word to Turgan or the others, sprinting down the hallway. ‘I’ll come get you.’‘They’re taking me down to the birthing room already,’ she says. ‘Meet me there.’I switch directions and run down another hall, staff members stepping out of my way as I pass. We’ve had a room in the castle prepared for this moment with all the herbs and equipment the healer will need, along with a comfortable bed and all the things Lyra has said will make her as relaxed as possible for the labor.‘Where is Elara?’Lyra doesn’t answer me for a moment, and I can feel a change in our bond—my mate is in pain. My stomach tightens as I run faster.‘She’s with me,’ she finally answers. ‘The contractions are pretty sharp.’‘I’m almost there.’My nerves rattle as I round the last corner and make it to the delivery room. It’s full of women—my mother, hers, her sister, and Cally, along with Elara and her

LyraMonths Later“Are you sure?” Cassian asks. “I don’t want to be far away with the baby so close.”“It’s not far,” I assure him. “The second I’m in labor, you’ll know. And labor takes a long time, right? My mother said I took about seven hours with me. You’re only an hour away, tops, if you shift and run.”He still doesn’t look convinced.“You can’t just sit around and wait for the baby,” I add. “She will come on her own schedule.”“Regardless, I’m changing the venue,” he insists. “I’ll have Alpha King Blake travel here.”I shake my head, but I can see in his eyes that he’ll accept no argument. “Okay,” I tell him. “I hope the Mountain-King Alpha doesn’t mind coming to Oceana.”“He won’t,” he says. “He’s a lot different than his father, Cobour, who wouldn’t dare set foot here after allying with Assanan.”“It’s been easy working with them now,” I agree. “His wife is so kind. It’s fun to work with Luna Queen Vera.”He leans in for a kiss, which is becoming more of a challenge these da

  • Bride of the Sea-King Alpha   What the Heart Knows

CassianI hadn’t pictured it like this.Assanan’s death has been on my mind for so long. I thought I knew how I would feel when it finally happened. I imagined us fighting in battle, one on one, my fangs sinking into his neck with the final blow. I’d step back, and the end would come quickly.I thought I’d feel triumphant, like I’d saved the world from all his horrors, that all the warriors around us, including Assanan’s, would cheer the victory. But this doesn’t feel like a victory.Instead of the grandeur of battle, he died on a healer’s clinic bed, emaciated and weak, humbly admitting all his wrongs. And all I feel is... numb.I’m holding Lyra’s hand tightly, feeling her own surge of mixed emotions through the mate bond. I didn’t expect it to be like this for her, either. I thought she’d be happy to be rid of the man who had done such harm to her mother and all the people of our kingdoms. But I don’t blame her. His confession, the news that her mother was his mate certainly... conf
