Chapter 11

Kathryn shook her head. "No."

She always had the pendant on, and with it being summer, many people had probably seen it on her. She was afraid that Chris would hold an internal investigation.

"You can't give it to him," Tally warned.

Kathryn couldn't help but remember how Markus had acted when he'd asked her for the pendant. "But he was so insistent."

Tally felt like she was about to go mad. She knew that Kathryn couldn't really not give the pendant to Chris. Everyone knew how good Markus was; whenever Chris needed something to be investigated, he would send Markus. He'd never failed before. If Kathryn refused to give Markus the pendant, then it would definitely make her suspicious. But if she did …

"God damn it!" Tally was frustrated.

Kathryn was also feeling very frustrated. She wished that she could turn back time and erase everything that had happened that night. "Then should I give it to him or not?" she asked anxiously.

"You have to, don't you?" Tally said, looking more frustrated than ever. If she didn't, Markus would become suspicious of her, and that would be very troublesome.

Now that Kathryn was investigating this matter with him, Tally was worried that she might not be able to continue to keep her secret. If she accidentally admitted to it, then it would be a tragedy.

Kathryn rubbed her hands together nervously. "I think many of our colleagues have seen me wearing it anyway." It wouldn't be hard to find out that it belonged to her once Markus started asking around.

Tally picked up her glass and downed all the water in it before looking at Kathryn listlessly. "So what do you think we should do now?"

Kathryn just stared back at her with watery eyes.

"Don't cry," Tally warned. "I'm not in the mood to comfort you."

"I'm really scared!"

Tally nodded. "I know." Kathryn wasn't the only one. Tally was terrified too.

Their food was served quickly, but neither of them had any appetite. After some hesitation, Tally asked, "Do you think Mr. Albert actually knows that it was you that night? This might just be some kind of game to him."

As soon as she said that, she wanted to slap herself. Everyone knew that Chris wasn't the kind of boss who would play games.

However, this was Kathryn they were talking about. She was normally so timid that even Tally would tease her every so often just to see her react. What if this was what Mr. Albert was doing as well?

Kathryn rolled her eyes. "He's not the kind to play jokes," she said. She'd worked in many places before during her school days, and Chris was the fiercest boss she'd ever encountered.

Tally nodded. "You're right." That meant that Chris knew nothing about who he'd slept with that night. So what should they do now? It was ridiculous to ask Kathryn, the culprit, to investigate herself.

The more Tally thought about it, the more she wanted to tear her hair out. Lunchtime was over, and yet they still hadn't found a solution.

On their way back to the company, Kathryn turned around and went in the direction of their apartment. Tally grabbed her before she could leave. "What are you doing?"

"I want to quit!" Kathryn didn't want to go back to the office.

"What about your mortgage?" Tally asked, exasperated.

Kathryn had no answer to that. The thought of her mortgage made her turn back around. It was true; one shouldn't ever be in debt. She was so broke that she couldn't resign.

In the end, she could only follow Tally back to the office.

As soon as they stepped into the elevator, Kathryn got a call from Chris. "Yes, Mr. Albert?" she said in a professional tone that made Tally glance at her.

Kathryn may be timid, but she was good at keeping up appearances. Even though she was terrified of Chris, she could still pretend to be serious in front of him.
